pokemon platinum and soul silver question

so the only pokemon ive played is pokemon silver back in the GBC days, so i assume in pokemon soul silver theres also two different regions ie, the joto region and the kanto region and each region has 8 gym and if i recall... a elite 4 of some kind so i was wondering how many different regions are in pokemon platinum?
