I know the Wii isn't about graphics but I have stumbled across footage of an early version of Resident Evil 4 (much different from the version we know today) and boy does it look stunning, even better than the current version.  I am sure that much of this is because of the lack of many on-screen enemies, but still.  Pay attention to the superior lighting and textures.  Notice that the backgrounds aren't even pre-rendered!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZeRZwVg3b2w

If this could be done on the Gamecube, it could be improved on the Wii.  Even if just a slight upgrade, it would be truly next-gen looking in my book.

But many people haven't seen it.  Considering its age, it's quite good looking isn't it?

That looks amazing, I can't believe it's running on GC. Are some of the backgrounds pre-rendered, Like around that table with the bottles on it?

Yeah, especially considering that was very old (around 2002 or 2003).  I don't think it's pre-rendered just because the camera pans to an extent and when Leon raises his gun it switches to an RE4-like perspective.  I could be wrong, parts of it may be pre-rendered.

That could be a system-seller.  A lot better than the wiimake and Chronicles combined.

Yeah, you're right. The ghost fight moves around that table, so it couldn't be pre-rendered.

Agreed! Those graphics and (lighting effects especially) were very impressive and do look better than RE4.

This reaffirms that the Wii has extreme potential and can make games that are fun but also look damn nice.

I could still notice the controls looked somewhat clunky though. I think this version could be improved vastly on the wii if they added better control for Leon. The over the shoulder view from RE4 worked well enough,

They should follow this version up or at least make a new one with the same engine with imroved graphics.

Yes, while RE4's gameplay is more impressive to most this shows that even the Gamecube was capable of some crazy visuals.  With the power of the Wii, graphics could be improved, more things could be put on the screen, and environments could be expanded.  Imagine an Eternal Darkness with those visuals.

Metroid Prime 2 has better graphics than Resident Evil 4 and was on one disc. That should tell you what the Wii is capable of.

The differences between those two games are debatable.  The Prime Series seems to have better looking environments (RE4 has some iffy textures IMO) but Resident Evil has better lighting and character models.  I think that we can all agree on the fact that both of those series look amazing though.  I am hoping that Metroid Prime 3 will look better than it did at E3.

Metroid Prime 2's character models were incredible. I think you're applying your judgement of Prime 1 to Prime 2, but Prime 2 improved on the former in every way possible, from a visual standpoint. And to say the character models in Metroid Prime 2 were its weakness indicates a lack of experience with the game.

And that is why I don't need to take your opinion seriously.

A game doesn't need to be full of humanoids to have great graphics.

I hate to get off-topic with this but here is my issue with the models in Prime 2: they simply didn't seem well designed to me.  Something about the Pirates in Metroid Prime 1 made them very fearsome and real looking while in the sequel they seemed goofy to me.  Don't get my started on Prime 3, it's even worse.  The way they and those weird ships look take me out of the game.

Resident Evil 4 is a great looking game, but it looks worse in motion than it does in screenshots, whereas Metroid Prime 2 is the opposite. Watch a space pirate get sucked into a black hole created by you or get eviscerated by a miniature star shot from your beam cannon and try to come back to me saying it has crappy graphics.

I'll agree with you there. MP2 does look good in motion, but still it has mediocre graphics. RE4 a game that came out on January 11th 2005, looks great still. Sorry but theres just no way to compare those 2 games. Its just a battle that MP2 cant win. RE4 has the best graphics on GC hands down. Maybe MP2 has a good artistic design, but thats it.

Metroid Prime 2 is an alltogether better looking game. The bosses looked better, there was more variety in the enemy and environmentdesign, and there were no invisible walls in Metroid Prime 2, unlike Resident Evil 4, which had a few.

People just think RE4 is better looking than Metroid Prime 2 because it's more realistic looking, but you don't want a science fiction game to look like real life, you want it to look like science fiction!

Thats really artistic design. Character models, RE4 wins. MP2 has the enviroment. But its really which one your cup of tea. I prefer a realistic style, you dont. And i know what your saying, and your right. MP2 would look pretty bad with the realistic approach. So in a way your right, and in a way im right. So its really a matter of personal opinoin.

I've seen that before and it still amazes me how much better that game looks. I really wish we had that version of Resident Evil 4 rather than the one we actually got. That version actually looks scary which is what I missed in RE4, the only actual part I found creepy was the hissing of the Regenerators.

Too many people judge a game's graphics from screenshots. Screenshots tell you so little about how a game actually looks when it's running that it's ridiculous. Metroid Prime 2's graphics are definitely on par with Resident 4, although they have very different art direction from each other. But saying MP2 has bad graphics and showing one crappy screenshot as evidence is pretty lame and makes me wonder if you've actually played the game.

Wow, I want that version XD

Also Star Fox Adventures had some of the most stunning graphics I've ever seen, granted some are a bit dull thanks to being originally made on the N64, and some minor water fraction glitches, but that aside it's beautiful. My point? Yes, the Wii can handle amazing graphics, but it will take more than some lazy PS2-porting devs to accomplish that. :(

It's pretty sad that the best looking game out on the Wii (Zelda) is a port of a gamecube game.  Soon Zelda will be replaced as the best looking Wii game.  The throne will go to Resident Evil 4, another port.  Crazy isn't it?  Maybe when Mario Galaxy and Metroid come out there will be a standard for what Wii games should look like that other developers might put a bit of effort in to achieve.  I wish Factor 5 would develop a game for the Wii.  They say that the Wii has serious potential and developers are being lazy.  They were some of the only ones to use some of those advanced effects on the Gamecube.

I totally agree.

Wii is double that of a GameCube. Double that of RE4, TP, Rouge Leader, Star Fox. C'mon devs, show us that while it's no Gears of War, it can definitely compete with the average 360 game. :(

I think Factor 5 could make one mind-blowing Wii game. Sucks they have no indication of Wii support.

well, i think the wii is closer to the 360 than you think. i have both, and let me tell you that while gears has great graphics, the framerate sucks and the online is extremely laggy. in fact, host advantage is a major advantage. so, i guess that the 360 cant handle running those amazing graphics.

Those areas are not as pre-manufactured as you think as you can still do the third person shooting style when you go into aiming mode. The reason it can look so good as all the console's horsepower go into rendering a single room instead of large open areas. Notice how Leon went through a couple rooms and there was another load time. All the RAM is being poored into those textures, bumpmapped and all and such, but it takes a hit on the RAM.

If you want to start a thread about best looking GC titles then I can start off with two games:

Resident Evil 4
- Best overall looking game on the GC in terms of realism. Makes use of pretty much every bit of horsepower and every graphics feature of the system.

Super Mario Sunshine
- Best looking water effects on the GC by far. Proved very in early in the GC's life that it was capable of some amazing shader effects, especially when done with a bit of ingenuity. Showcased real-time reflections, and high level shader code.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II - Early GC game that showed off the system's ability to do bumpmaps and environmental maps as well as dynamic lighting and dynamic shadowing on a very large scale.

Even with an extra 50% of horsepower (we know it's more than that), just think how much prettier these games could look.

Really? Ive never played a RE game, but that looked very... dull. He just walked around and examined objects, then occasionally something 'scarry' came and he walked away. Seems like it would have been better to backtrack while shooting. Makes much more sense than running away.
