It's bejeweled, yes, but it has a lot of different gameplay modes tied together with a nice RPG theme to it. The story, characters, etc. are not interesting. In addition to combat, you can capture enemies (clear a set screen of all jewels), research spells they know (get a certain number of each type of jewels), even train mounts (battles with turn time limits) which add slight advantages in combat. You can siege towns which provide more cash over time, find runes in the world which allow you to craft items.
The most RPG-ish part of the game is growing your character. He or she will learn new moves as you progress in levels, which can take a long time in later levels. The moves are pretty cool and depend upon collecting the different colored "jewels". Some classes need different types of "jewels" more than others. Druids need yellow, for instance, while warriors rely heavily on red, although most spells require a certain amount of a couple different colors.
The combat is turn based, so it puts a different spin on the typical bejeweled formula. Where you might normally try to line up 4 of a kind for your next turn, you need to be careful not to in Puzzle Quest combat, because then your enemy will take it and lay the smack down.
Technically it's pretty weak. The frame rate can drop when jewels fall, and the music is pretty terrible and monotonous. Overall it's more fun and addicting than I thought. The RPG presentation is a fun way to play bejeweled.
