While this is not a true quote, I am pointing out a trend I have been noticing lately.  In nearly every interview with a developer about an upcoming Wii title, they tend to say something about how easy the game will be.  From Resident Evil to Metroid, they all seem to say something about how easy the game will be.  What does this mean?  The controls will be easy to learn, or the game will simply be easy?  Comments like these start to worry me because I certainly don't want unchallenging games.

They never say the game will be easy, they say the ABILITY TO PLAY THE GAME will be easy.

Hence "pick up and play"

Big difference.

I think they will stay true to the MP formula. They did say they were making at least three types of control setup, expert being akin to FPS controls on a PC.

I wouldn't be surprised if this trend continues. ZeldaTP was fairly easy. I would be disappointed if they keep dumbing down beloved series.

I darn well hope not. Metroid's probably the only Nintendo game that's challenging. Zelda game difficutlies were reduced at Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Now Majora's Mask was a fairlydifficult game. The first time for Ocarina was also challenging. Metroid games have always been a little on the hard side which makes them so great. Fortunately the trend didn't stop at Metroid Prime. I really hope the third won't be the worst here.

But I think Jaysonguy's probably right. It's probably easy to pick and play instead of the actual game difficulty.

Nintendo has been harping on simplicity since the Gamecube. With that system, it was the Giant Green A Button on the controller. They wanted games to use only one button as often as they could.

It's the same with the Wii. They would like games to use as few buttons as possible. I remember Miyamoto and other Nintendo execs commenting numerous times in the last five years about how "complex" gaming has become, where the controllers have a dozen buttons. They said it's not easy for someone who isn't into gaming to get into gaming with that kind of complexity to deal with, which is true.

So yeah, the ease is in the controls, not in the inherent challenge of a game.

The challenging games like Metroid are awesome. I hate when a game is too easy. I hope it doesn't happen to Metroid 3.

Ithink, and hope, they're meaning easy to "pick up and play", as in the controlling. (movement with controllers and motion sensetivity.)

it's not easy in the sense of simple puzzles and stupid enemies it's easy in the sense that the super accurate precise control system will make the game easier to play. Take metroid for example. Rather then having to hold down R, find the enemy, lock on, then fire, all you will do on the wii is point at enemy and fire away.

it's easier because of the controls

While the developers are referring to how easy the games are to learn how to play, there is a trend in games getting easier as they get longer. Ever since the CD was invented, developers wanted to fit as much content as they could on the disc, but they didn't want to make it difficult for people to access the content that they had to now spend so much more time making, so they made the games easier. As games get longer and longer, with higher dev times, they will also get easier. I actually prefer really hard games with good replay value, than a long game that has no replay value. I find that anything over 15 hours long I will not play through more than once. I have, however beaten SMW about 100 times, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 around the same amount of times, and I have beaten Super Ghouls and Ghosts (a game I just got) about 10 times in the last few weeks. I know this sounds like bragging, but in comparison, I have beaten every Zelda only once (except Zelda 2, I beat that twice :P). I just feel like I have no time to beat long games, but I love challenging myself and in long games the challenging parts and fun parts in general only start happening later in the game.

--- wow that was kind of off topic and long/rantish lol...

You can't bring up Twilight Princess for an easy Wii game.

That's a Gamecube game that was ported to the Wii, in no way was it meant to be a dumbed down title for the Wii.

But at the same time, the motion sensing feature can be as many buttons as developpers wants. I was playig Wii boxing today and found out that it actually has a good number of moves with only the motion sensing.

Exactly. But motions are much less abstract than buttons, which furthers Nintendo's stance on simplicity. It's a little easier to understand "do an uppercut to do an uppercut" than "press up, up A to do an uppercut," although if improperly coded, the motion controls can be more complicated... :?

Controlling I think/ They are worried, and rightly so; about gamers being worried that the games controls are going to be awkward, clunky and tiring, and they are trying to reassure the public that the controls work, and are even better than the old style of gamepads.

Easy games just leave me fealing empty after I beat them...

FFX-2 and FFXII left me fealin like that too... Metriods have never been super easy tho so I'm not worried...

They changed the game style to FPS for the first GC Metriod and that didn't affect the difficulty.
