Apparently, the 3DS is going to be much stronger than the wii, and it's processing power will be comparable to the PS3/360. So I thought that was pretty amazing. But than I thought, could it be possible to port Skyward sword to the 3DS and could a Zelda game built from the ground up for the 3DS, be technically superior than Skyward Sword? I think so. But than I started thinking even more, and realized one of the things nintendo has always done with the consoles and handhelds, is keep the graphical capabilities and processing power gap huge. For example, the gameboy was probably as powerful as the snes, while the Gamecube was much powerful, by like 2 generations. than the DS's power was in between the N64 and the SNES, while the wii was also about 2 generations ahead of the DS. So now that the 3DS is stronger than the wii and took such a big leap technically from the DS, will nintendo's next console also take such a big jump graphic wise and processing power wise? I think that's definitely a possibility. So do you think this is bogus or possible?

Yes, according to multiple developers, the 3DS is definitely more powerful than the wii, and devs are saying that it's processing power is comparable to the 360 and PS3.

No..

In terms of power, the hardware is somewhere between the Gamecube and the Wii. Nintendo can't make it too powerful because it would, one: Draw a LOT of power with next to no battery life and two: simply cost too much to produce (which would get passed onto consumers in the form of an extremely high price tag.)

It will be like a gamecube (maybe a bit better) with some nice effects and shaders and such. So yeah if you combine the two and get a good dev with the architecture of the system, they can make a game that looks pretty good (although not HD). I know graphics are mind blowing today, but the thought of playing a game similar to any of the metroid primes graphics in 3D on a handheld is awesome!

Based on rumored 3DS specs I've seen, its perhaps more slightly powerful than the GC rather than in the ball park with Wii...

i think things are getting messed up in translation about devs saying the 3DS is comparable to a PS3 and 360. it seems that what dev mean to say is that it has some of the same features as a Ps3 and 360. it technically has an openGL ES2.0 compliant GPU that, as far as devs are concerned, has features not too different from those found in the HD consoles. this makes getting their PS3 and 360 code working on the 3DS much less hassle compared to, say, porting it to the wii (which is es1.1 i think). it seems that people saw this remark and concluded that the 3DS would be a mini Ps3/360....which if you think about it is a bit daft. its doable but it would cost an absolute fortune to do and have the a battery life measured in minutes. at least i think thats whats hapened. the rumoured specs (which sound very plausible) are nowhere near PS3 or 360 levels of performance. the 3DS is a massive leap over the DS though...no doubt about that.

TC plz dont spread false info. The specs are already out. The 3DS is around the xbox/Wii, but not far stronger. Its nowhere near the 360 or PS3. Its barely even comparable. It just has a newer feature set (things like advance shaders and what not.) that is similar to the current gen consoles, but in terms of raw performance its far away.

Exactly. I think that with those features though, some games could look pretty great. But of course OVERALL the jump will be what you would expect. Just as N64 was to GC.

Well the actual specs are actually lower than the Wii, technically.

But because of the size of the screen amongst other things, the tech does not need to be as powerful to create great graphics.

Exactly and that's why it can handle "next gen" effects like shaders and fancy lighting, just look at RE revelations trailer, but that doesnt mean it is way more powerful than the wii

The only thing the 3DS beats the Wii in is flash memory and that's nothing. There are phones with more flash memory than the Wii, that doesn't mean anything. When devs are saying the 3DS is comparable to the HD consoles, they obviously don't mean in regards to specs. Its not even remotely close; but the sum of its parts allow them to do some things that they could do on the HD consoles like with the models and the effects. But don't go expecting Dead Rising with 1200 zombies on screen or advanced AI and physics, I doubt it can do that.

I would say the 3ds is less powerful then Wii, but it will have better looking games because the 3ds has a much smaller screen. The DS has Super Mario 64 ported to it and it looked much better then the original even though the DS is less powerful, but the DS had a smaller screen which means you don't have to put as much detail into it. The 3ds so far is about on par with Wii in graphics, maybe some things like Resident Evil Revelations compete with Xbox 360 and PS3 detail. The 3ds games will probably be on par with the 360 and ps3 graphic wise after a few years and reach full potential like basically every console after release, but in terms of actual power 3ds doesnt compete, but in terms of looks, the 3ds wont have to put nearly as much detail because the screen size is so much smaller, meaning the 3ds doesnt have to do as much work to get the same look.

Sakamoto said this. And he said he THINKs it will knock your socks off. Sakamoto doesn't work internaly with nintendo on hardware. They guy just said in an interview he hasn't even touched the 3DS yet.

When you look at the specs it appears to be somewhere between the 2 xboxs. That being said SS being ported would likely kill the game and do mega damage to the series at this point

Wow!! Seems like I was really misinformed, or misunderstood some of the articles I was reading. I feel so silly and stupid now, thinking that SS could be done on the 3DS lol. But still the 3DS is a major jump in technology from the DS, so I guess the same might happen with the successor to the wii.

Not near the the Wii and way behind the the PS3 and 360. When the current DS came everyone was saying it was on part with the N64 and that wasn't true.

Those articles should not be taken seriously. They trend to do that and exaggerate just for marketing.

I think this is appropriate for the NDS forum or System Wars. This is the Wii forum.
