http://nintendo-revolution.blogspot.com/2007/03/breaking-no-unified-gamer-tags-or-codes.html

This website has been very accurate in the past, enough so that other sites have picked up the story. Unfortunately, if this is true then we will have an online system similar to the DS which is bad. No univeral friend codes at all.

I understand many nintendo fans do not care about online gaming, but regardless this could cause terrible reprecussions... Its very possible this is the fiunal blow cursing the Wii to be a Mini-game machine forvever.

I can't stand the obnoxious jerks on Xbox live, but I also refuse to let Nintendo try to convince me that they are doing me favors by cutting corners on cost to maximize profit. A good online system could mean more creative games and more "hardcore" games. This means more users... More users means better games and more exclusives....

Yea, I know what you mean. I was really hoping for a good online setup by nintendo. That is the one thing they are really missing and I think it would be in their best interest to go ahead and make a nice online network. It will payoff in the long run. Stop being lazy nintendo!!!

ummm... I said MANY Nintendo gamers don't care about online, and compared to Xbox PC and PS fans they really don't. If they did why would they be so faithful to Ninty? Also how many minutes go by without someone saying they could care less about online multiplayer on this forum as compared to whatI've seen in the others? Bring up Online in Metroid Prime 3... the mixed response you'll get. Online functionality is REQUIRED on 360 and those games don't suffer, but many nintendo fans think its one or the other... There is a signifigant and vocal minority of Ninty fans who simply could care less about online. Also, sorry if this has already been posted, but the news isn't really that old. It was just poted today. The concept has been suspected for some time, but now its NEARLY official. I guess I need to spend more time online! :)

I believe if nintendo actually got some good third party games and established good online play, people's moods would change. I feel that there really is no way nintendo can match XBL and I think others may believe this as well. But trust me, let nintendo set up great online play like XBL and many of the so called people that say they dont care will be online for hours and hours just like those loyal microsoft gamers.

I agree wholeheartedly. I came to the Wii from the Xbox so I know how much more mileage you get out of a game from a good online system. Most people who say they don't care say, "Meh, I played Halo 2 once at my cousins and it sucked." Sorry, they just don't get the idea yet.

As long as you have the option to play with people that ARENT on your friends list (ala MKDS) I'll be fine. They did say it will have a central hub and such, just not a singular profile with a singular friends list. You can still play with people worldwide -- I think you're overreacting a touch.

It would be nice to have something like XBL though as far as friends and all that stuff. Online gameplay takes it to the next level. I quickly became tired of Halo 2 but when i get online I am never bored because I am always playing with new people and nothing is the same. No matter what others say, online has a ton to do with gaming today.

im getting sick of nintendo. the wii still really just feels like the GC. the wiimote isnt that impressive anymore. and the only new feature i think is worthwhile is the virtual console. it didnt really feel "new" when i got it. because everything was basically the same. except the wiimote. and it was a slight letdown really. b xx

To be honest I am really bored with my xbox360 and the only reason I play it is to talk to friends while I am gaming. Wii needs headsets. The fact that I haven't seen anything about this is bothering me. I think the whole "friend Code" thing is silly you should be able to add one profile and game with that person whenever. I new about the friend code situation going in.

what I think they should do with the Wii online system, they should make it with a choice one with complete freedom to play whoever you want, and also have a setting like parental controls that enables friend codes.

EA is rumoured to be releasing a headset and it is also said that u use a mic in High School Musical so maybe it's a possibility.

I hope that this is not true even though it probably is. Just because this is the online plan being used for starting out games does not mean they cant change it. Remember Wii still has a universal FC all Gamespy or NIntendo has to do is update a new onlineplan that uses this FC that is used to message friends. I wish there was some way to effectivelt complain to Nintendo. :(

Before we get all bent out out of shape about the FC system, There is nothing wrong with it per say. Take a look at Metroid as an example. The allowed for random play that allowed for a rival list, that later you could use in a lobby. Now the only thing that that didn't do, was allow for you to turn a rival into a friend without contacting them. This could be easily remedied had they only allowed you to check a box that would later send a message to a rival sating that you requested to be a friend rather than a rival. If the rival added a check to his box, then then next time you booted up your copy of Metriod you would be friends instead of rivals. They could possibly do this for the Wii, which would make it easier to manage the list of guest vs the list of friends.

Needing to enter in long strings of characters for each friend for each game is certainly a pain, and not very user friendly. And having it be on a game by game basis means that out of game functionality will be fragmented and sparse, at best.

Here's the article for the people who don't bother to read the sources.

Falafelkid: I would like to know if I am right in assuming that the features mentioned (friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities and comprehensive rankings data) suggest a single, unified online platform for each console, rather than one which is dependent on individual games (as is the case with the DS). GameSpy: GameSpy’s technology does allow for features that could span multiple games. With the Nintendo Wii, however, the multiplayer features are title-specific. Falafelkid: But is that the case for all Wii online titles across the board? GameSpy: Yes, that is the case for Wii titles. Falafelkid: Just one last question to make absolutely sure I have got this right, please. If I have a friend roster in one game, that roster will not be available to me in any other game. I have to build up an entirely new list for each title, right? GameSpy: The answer to your question is yes, for the Wii friend lists are game specific.

So far this mean specific friend list per game, like the PC. Where does it mentions individual game friend codes?

and online multiplayer for video game consoles is coming more and more popular and the wii needs a stable online system if they want to stay in the sales battle because sony and microsoft are really focusing on online they even give you a 3 month membership with the 360i f the wii's online system sucks the console overall will suffer and this is a problem because a lot of people dont beleive in the wii as it is "OMG look at the graphics" that kinda thing and if the mulitplayer function sucks that will leave a significant dent in their sales and I think nitendo should relize how important the online function really is because its hurting them right now and it will forever if they dont get to work on a solid online system.

Well this kinda sucks but I kinda think about it like I do on PC, I have individual friend lists for each ame which isnt bad because not everyone on my friends list have the same games as I do, so I kinda like when I enter a game and look at my friends they will all be able to play

Your kidding me right??? You must not have XBL. Much easier than having a ton of different lists for different games.

From the start of the Nintendo online talking I knew it wouldn't be something like XBL and I wasn't holding my breath. Don't get me wrong, I would appreciate a solid online functionality, but I rather prefer more and good games instead if I had to choose. An MMO Mario universe game would rock the socks though.

This is why its best to own more than one console. I have given up on Nintendo online. Which is fine, i can still enjoy a solid single player game. I have my 360 for a great online experience, and the ps3 to a lesser extent. But dream on about playing Metroid or other Nintendo franchises online...it just wont happen, or be worth the trouble.

Yea somewhat true. We must just have patience and see what nintendo will do. They are so obsessed with expanding the audience, they are forgetting about the gamers that really made them successful. Get off the whole getting new gamers in the industry thing and just give us hardcore gamers what we need nintendo!

I never once thought that Nintendo would have even a half-baked online set-up. Apparently I was right, and I'll only be using my Wii as a secondary console to my XBOX 360. Now, if they could announce a game I'm interested in within the next year....

If they did why would they be so faithful to Ninty? Staccat0

I always thought it was because of the great games.

Why did you buy a Wii, if you're not interested in any upcoming games?

Probably because he has enjoyed nintendo games in the past. But nintendo has dropped off a bit and no longer control the industry as they did before.

And threatening to sell your wii wont do anything, you might as well keep it because there will probably be a few titles worth playing down the road.

*sigh* thank you, too few people are being reasonable about all this, this "news" is at best a rumour.

As long as they have online games what's the problem? This is just like the Playstation online games. I don't need to play with friends online to have a good time... i'm trying to rip them a new one not be friends with them.
