I don't think that is a good reason. I don't think they do it much because Nintendo is mainly family-oriented, and there are children in the family. They don't want young kids to be exposed to anything bad online because of all that does go on in an online game. While racism is one thing, there are many other things, like bad language. That, in my opinion, is probably why Nintendo tries to keep the games that go online limited to certain options. I do, however, wish that Nintendo would allow a little more flexibility for the older gaming audience.Rev06
I agree with that.Â
WOW!!! are you kidding me, you think just because some looser got offended by another looser on the inter-web-net thingy, that gives nintendo the right reason to make a crapy online service. i guess you never enjoyed the awesomeness of xboxlive, thats why you actually support this friendcode BS. after seeing how pokemon D/P's online was DESRTROYED by **** friendcodes, i finally learned the value of xboxlive, and im glad i pay less than 5 bucks a month for a great online service, rather than a half baked chocked up restricted experience.
Because during 3 gens in a row (NES, SNES, N64), japanese gamers ignored Nintendo online efforts, so they pretty much dropped it with the GC. So since the DS they want to make it right - at least what's right in their conception of right.Wintry_Flutist
You have to admit what they tried to do with online in Japan was never going to happen. Buying a big add-on and only being able to connect at specicfic times.Â

I agree as well, they should have an option where you could register something like your drivers licence so thay you could be matched with people your own age. I can't stand having bloody ears from people that scream and sing on live when you are trying to talk to your team.
i heard many offensive stuff on xboxlive that could make 9 year Japanese girls cry (nintendo's target audience:roll: ) but so what??!!! if you get offended by something someone says to you during a game of halo2 on live......you should seriously consider emotional support from a professional. its a video game, ppl play it to have fun, if your playing against 15 other ppl in a heated match, and someone stabs you, PROFANITY WILL COME OUT OF YOUR MOUTH!!!!! and itll go back and forth throughout the game (and some teabagging....) but when the game finishes you leave the lobby by saying goodgame, thats how you do it.
and yeah, It's not exclusive to Xbox Live. Welcome to the real world. Racism is everywhere.

From my experience the problem is kids, they're the main culprits of profanity and poor sportsmanship. Its like a hub for being naughty and getting away with it. If you could make it adult-only it would be better, but thats not going to happen and what about the good kids?
If only you could segregate.Â

Welcome to the internet.Â
You'll find the same on WoW, Diablo 2, Battlenet, and UT2k4. Deal with it, make friends, find your crowd play games, have fun.
I thought Nintendo chose to use friend codes (and no online chat in most DS games) because they were afraid that children would meet pedophiles through their systems and games.TeZhI
Ye i heard that too. In any case the net has it's trouble with kids being involved and Nintendo has an image to hold..besides
it's nice to give parents a piece of mind their kids can play and not to have to monitor them :)Â

Well apparently pedo's like to take up jobs as school janitors and teaching assistants too so we should stop kids from going? I think that would be a bad reason myself.
You people are quite the crowd. You sound like a bunch of snobby rich kids that can't get their way, so they make it hell for anyone else. Get over it, Nintendo made their choice and stuck with it. Besides has it actuall been disclosed as to how their on-line will work??Â
I dont think Nintendo tries to protect people online because they think its the right thing to do, they do it to protect themselves. While it clearly says on online games that experience may change online, we are not responsible so on and so forth. People looking to make an easy buck, can find some sleazy lawyer and sue the hell out of a gaming company. The same way that people do when there kids imitate something they saw on tv or something. So Nintendo is just looking out for thier own personal best interest, and who here wouldnt do that if they were in the same position.Sepewrath
I've seen this opinion a lot and I can see where you are coming from. But when has Sony or MS ever been sued because of what happens online in a game that is featured on thier console? It hasn't happened and the case would be a no win situation. If they are going to use FC then what is the point of parental controls? It's always better to start off with an open system then give the option to add restrictions for those that want them.Â
how waas pokemon's online destroyed? join a damn union or sumtin and stop complaining. my friend roster in pokemon is fullWOW!!! are you kidding me, you think just because some looser got offended by another looser on the inter-web-net thingy, that gives nintendo the right reason to make a crapy online service. i guess you never enjoyed the awesomeness of xboxlive, thats why you actually support this friendcode BS. after seeing how pokemon D/P's online was DESRTROYED by **** friendcodes, i finally learned the value of xboxlive, and im glad i pay less than 5 bucks a month for a great online service, rather than a half baked chocked up restricted experience.

This thread really opened my eyes on the kind of things that happen on XBL. Is this the reason why Nintendo seem to dislike the prospect of anyone playing anyone?Totodile
This doesn't make sense, this only happens through voice or text chat, so far the DS has both. Why is the Wii so censored when the DS, while still having friend codes, has voice and text chat. Racism can occur on the DS and not the Wii unless Nintendo is planning a microphone or something. The reason is probably because Nintendo doesn't want to get sued for something that occurs over their online service. So that is why they are cautious over online.

I think the problem isn't that people are getting offended but that this sort of language and racism brews deliquent behaviour in children.  I'm glad that Nintendo is doing online the way they are. Listening to the language and racism spewed on X-box live makes me sad that today's youth seem to have no sense of respect or decency. There may be parental controls but they're obviously not being enforced. If I were a parent I would feel much more comfortable having my kid play online games with friend codes on a nintendo system rather than risk them being exposed to such baseless hate. Racism may be everywhere in the real world but it doesn't have to be.Â
It'd be pointless trying to cancel out all possible negative effects when getting an online atmosphere, but Nintendo happens to be succeeding by making it non-existent.
There is no way to censor everything, keeping the Wii communities 100% clean would be like going out into the real world with ear plugs or just staying at home.
They just need to implement parental controls over the online gaming. When turning parental controls on for their children they should have the option to either block out the online gaming entirely or use friend codes. And when turning the parental controls off it should be an open network.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I am a parent (granted, my kids aren't old enough to play videogames yet), but it makes me sick to listen to the idiocy and profanity on Xbox Live, let alone expose my kids to it. Plus, I have enough friends that FC's don't really matter to me. I'd rather play with my friends than to play some stranger who cusses when he loses, and spews out even foul-er language when he wins. That's not fun to me, and I can't really imagine why anybody actually plays on Xbox Live, anyways...

From Nintendo's perspective, no one cared.
