Having played on the 3DS at the Nintendo press event over the weekend one thing was very clear. Any game using fast backgrounds works beautifully on the system, both Kid icarus and Pilotwings had superb depth to dazzle the player with. With Lylat wars also being remade for the 3DS is this the opportunity for developers to try and ressurect 3D space shooters?I personally would love to see A new Freespace game on the 3DS, with collosal space ships and you zipping about in your hercules praying that a capital ship laser doesn't disintergrate you.

The hardware is more than capable, the capacity on the cart is accomodating enough(1.5gig) all that is needed is some interest.

Being a fan of Wing Commander, Freespace and Star Lancer, I have to say yes. I do, however, think StarFox 64 (and probably a new StarFox) is the best we're going to get, but then I'm a "glass is half empty and what's left in it is a mixture of horse pee and LJM games" kind of guy. So, you know.

Aye i know it being nintendo, Star fox is likely all we'll get. Maybe tho, just maybe some one else will see the opportunity to revive a genre that's pretty much dissapeared in the past 10 years. Hell they should try with Elite again, that was supposed to come out on GBA!

3D games are OK, but I prefer 2D ones. And the DS has been the king of handheld 2D gaming. Looks like an end to a great era. I like what I see of the 3DS so far, but I really hope the 2D games will be plentiful as they have been on the DS. Either way, the DS probably has enough great 2D games to last several generations (so maybe I shouldn't be concerned).

I'll be honest, all of my DS games are 3D. I was mainly referring to the sheer fact that the new 3DS can actually push some polygons onit's awesome display and how good classic 3D space shooters would match up to the systems capabilities and really show it off.If you manage to get your hands on one you will know exactly where i am coming from.Pilot wings and kid icarus were both superb due to the depth of the effects on the 3DS.

The hardware is there i just pray some developers have the balls to have a crack at space epic, we haven't had anything close since freespace, and nothing anywhere near on consoles since rogue squadron 2.

I don't think you need to worry that much, there will probably be a bunch of 2D games for 3DS too, perhaps they will utilize the depth the 3D screen can provide, but they may still play in 2D.

yes and more yes. a starfox that plays like freespace or freelancer would be amazing. a new freespace would also be fantastic (though i would prefer to see that on the PC). the 3DS could run something like freespace without too much trouble. i used to run FS2 very nicely on a 500MHz Pentium 3 with a voodoo 3 and 64MB of ram.

The 3DS would be the perfect platform for an old school space shooter. How about a remake of Elite?
