THQ is cutting losses with some franchises by retiring them but they've also made an interesting cancellation of a game that might come to benefit the Wii.

Destroy All Humans: Big Willy Style is cancelled for the PS2 which makes the Wii as the sole console that will carry the game.

Does this mean that the devs in charge will try to do more then just a PS2 port of the game now that the game doesn't have to straddle each console? Maybe this is the start of third party makers to concentrate on the Wii when it comes to newer titles.

With the way that the "other" console does it's backward capability it might be less of a risk making a game that concentrates purely on the Wii.

I'm so glad that THQ is trimming the hedges. All the games they've cancelled or "stopped pursuing" suck. I hope the new Destroy All Humans is good and Wii-centric as well but maybe the game is so far along in development that it's terrible already.

well... the game is still coming to the psp, and seeing as the psp is pretty much a mini version of the PS2 nothing much will have changed.

So then people will just start complaining that the Wii's third party games are only ports from other consoles.

There's a gold mine for 3rd parties if they can put out good, quality games for the Wii. Example: Guitar Hero III

The game is coming out real soon. It's pretty much finished so it will still be released as a PS2 game with waggle attached.

Guitar Hero III may be selling great, but it's not exactly "high quality" either. For one thing, it released in only mono. Proof of rushing if they did not see that. I know it was another team, but this one was no where near as good as the first three IMO. But yes, 3rd party would do extremely well on Wii with the small amount of 1st party game coming out each year.

It could be. Right now publishers are so half assed backwards with the decisions they make with Wii you never know what they are gonna do. Hopefully they reassigned the best devs of the PS2 team to focus on Wii and also improve the graphics becausethey can focus on one version.

I hope that when the PS2 FINALLY dies that devs dont completely ignore Wii or just use PSP ports.

I personally think that once they stop porting PS2 games we will see more original games or even the possibility of them porting 360 and Ps3 games.

I dont really understand what the heck THQ is doing with Worms though.... from what I hear online was dropped because the developer has to meet the deadline they set with THQ. While I will more than likely pick it up either way, Worms would sell tons more copies if it was online.

Actually... they are now selling surround sound GH copies instead of mono only, And Activision now take old GH copies and replaces them with new surround sound copies

Well, its a plus in that the team that was handling the PS2 version can be re-distributed to work on the Wii and PSP version. But the last time there was a Wii/PSP game, it was Alien Syndrome, and thats not a good thing at all. And from what I can tell, its not made by Pandemic, which only compounds my doubts as to whether this actual game will be good.

On the other hand, if the trend continues, the Wii can expect a bigger focus as the primary system for games that would otherwise be mere waggle ports, which is beneficial t to the overall 3rd Party quality situation.

why the heck is the ps2 still alive?

pikma

Because Sony continues to support their last gen hardware unlike Nintendo and Microsoft. They continue to manufacture the hardware and they encourage third parties to continue to develop for it.

If the market allows it, Sony will continue to support the PS2 until it's 10 years old.

which is hurting the PS3 badly. They may as well make God of War on PS2 again cause it will defoinitely sell better.

The point here really isn't about Big Willy Style, it's more that a studio sees more potential to make money off of just the Wii then the Wii AND the PS2 which could be huge as we go forward this generation.

If studios see valid reasons to see the Wii as a stand alone console and not piggyback it with the PS2 3rd parties might get a chance to blossom even more on the console.

EA has their own Wii-dedicated development company, don't they? They have yet to "wow" me.

Many do at this point. Namco/Bandai even teamed up with Nintendo to make one.

Other devs have made a lot of multiplatform stuff and while games like Madden and SSX were tons of fun and great the first time around EA didn't do much to boost the games the second time around. Still great games just they didn't distance themselves that far from the first titles.

If this pans out you might see more devs take Wii-exclusive building to another level.

It makes sense, really. When there are...what? 20 million Wiis worldwide?

When there are that many Wiis in the world, it makes financial sense to have dedicated development teams for it: the system's hardware and controls are so different from the competition.

But the fact that it costs less to make Wii games actually scares me a little, because I fear that Devs will just put their "B" team to work on the Wii, and the game would have lower production values.

You're touching on a thread I'll be making in the future but I've been known to repeat myself so heck, we'll start now.

Larry Miller had a book and it's terrific and in it he says that back in the day a studio would have 200 million dollars. Now what they'd do is hand out 20 million to 10 different movies and have a bunch of different movies that some work some don't but there's variety.

These days a studio has 200 million dollars and they splurge it all on one movie and try to make it a blockbuster.

Ultimately that way of doing movies has destroyed much of the art of film making.

I'm interested to see how the "10 different movies" approach works with the Wii compared to the blockbuster.

Totally different. PS1 and PS2 had that mass casual audience appeal that just isnt there on PS3. ALso the games are not that good on PS3. My point is they shouldnt continue to boost PS2 while their future product is so lackluster.

The PS2 is still alive because people still buy games for it.
