Although my sister has owned a Wii for the past year or so, I've never actually played any games for it. Her collection is pretty pathetic, mainly consisting of children's animal games and gimmicky minigame collections, but I would like to investigate the system and play a few great exclusives that I can't find on the Xbox 360. The problem?

I can't find a single game on the system I'm super-compelled to play. My interest in platformers and sports titles is pretty limited, I couldn't care less about the minigame collections, and I'm not looking for re-makes of games I already have. I'm sure there's great stuff out there, but I'm really not sure which Wii games to pick up for the system. Any recommendations are appreciated - I already basically own the console, now it's just a matter of finding something to play on it!

You should definitly pick up Xenoblade Chronicles. Amazing rpg. Metroid Prime 3 or the Metroid Prime Trilogy(if you can find it) are some of the best fps on any system.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Xenoblade before they become hard to come by.

Tales of Symphonia 2, Rune Factory Tides of Destiny, Little King's Story, Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, Muramasa are all good RPGs.

Tides of Destiny was really addicting... it wasn't perfect but it was really fun. And it was long if you're into that sort of thing, I somehow managed to put more than a hundred hours into it before I even finished it.

- Goldeneye 007. You said you're an FPS fans, so I see no better way to start the list out than with Goldeneye 007: arguably the best FPS per se on the console, with the added bonus of you being able to play with the pointer instead of the dual-analogs.

- Xenoblade: Chronicles. You said you liked RPGs, this is one of the best yet. It's not flawless, but its scope, soundtrack, replay value and gameplay quality are just too high for you to ignore.

- Metroid Prime Trilogy. FPA (First Person Adventure) games where you use guns. It'd be an FPS, if FPSs had cool puzzles, stories, world and as varied gameplay as the Metroid Prime franchise. If you like games, there's no excuse not to play this.

- Super Paper Mario. While I'm partial to the first game (Paper Mario - you can download it on the Virtual Console, if you wish to play it), this RPG is just as good, even if less innovative, than its predecessor.

- Resident Evil 4. This game is widely considered the best in the franchise, and a great game by itself. The fact that you can use the pointer instead of the sufferable dual-analogs just adds to its value.

- The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. While I agree that the TLoZ games are closer to an 'adventure' genre than role-playing per se, Skyward Sword has so much in production values (graphics, soundtrack, length) and so much in gameplay (1:1 sword control, pointer aiming, several puzzles and gadgets to complete them with), that if you own a Wii, you should own Skyward Sword.

- Okami. When I first played Okami, my thoughts were: 'this is Zelda done better than Zelda'. Fantastic game. Again, it's closer to an adventure genre, but if you enjoy RPGs you might like it as well.

- Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. An on-rails shooter done right. Forget about those slow-paced arcade games you played when you were younger, Sin & Punishment will have you dodging attacks across the screen and bombarding your enemies with bullets and melee attacks.

These are the ones I can think of -- and The Last Story, which I haven't finished, but has a high rating. There are several other ones in the VC and Wiiware department, of which I'd like to mention Final Fantasy VI (named Final Fantasy III on the VC because of how it was called when it was released in the US, on the SNES), Final Fantasy IV (II) and Chrono Trigger -- three games that are hailed as achievements for jRPGs and games as a whole. If I were you, I'd explore the other genres, but these alone should keep you busy for a decent amount of time.

Thanks for the suggestions, everybody! Looks like Xenoblade is getting a lot of love here - I'll need to check it out next time I'm at the game store.

Stop recommending Zelda, its not an RPG, not even close.

On topic:

RPGs:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles - Best JRPG this generation, must have if you're looking for a JRPG.
  • The Last Story - Great combat, interesting story, not quite the calibre of Xenoblade but it's definitely a great game.
  • Monster Hunter Tri - A bit of an Action-RPG hybrid, its got EXCELLENT boss fights (every fight is a boss fight!) and a lot of character customization and gear depth. You could literally spend thousands of hours on it and still have stuff you can strive to accomplish.
  • Muramasa: The Demon Blade - Another action-rpg, has beautiful visuals, fluid combat, and is super cheap these days.
  • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - A strategy/RPG hybrid, meh graphics but excellent difficulty and very satisfying strategic thinking. Lots of character building, and character perma-death if they die on the field adds a stronger tie to your favorite characters and actual weight in your decisions on the battlefield.
  • The Rune Factory games - These are straight up RPG's, sandbox life-sim style I guess with some dungeon crawling, not for everyone but they're fun games.

FPSs:

  • Metroid Prime Trilogy - (Or Metroid Prime 3 if you cant find trilogy) Not really a true FPS, its more a first person action game, but it is one of the greatest trilogies of all time in one with excellent controls. Definitely a must have.
  • Red Steel 2 - The combat is unlike anything you can experience on another console, its fast paced, action packed, and its really cheap by now. Not to mention its got gorgeous visual art design.
  • Goldeneye 007 - I see that you already have the COD games on 360, so I would recommend Goldeneye instead so you can play a shooter with awesome motion controlled aiming without playing something you already have, though to be honest Black Ops is awesome on the Wii.
  • Conduit 2 - Ehhh, campaign is really corny, but the local split-screen multiplayer horde-mode is really fun with friends. I've spent hours just playing that mode split-screen.

I really enjoyed the Campaign.I still play it every now and then for the fun of it since I got everything in the Campaign.I love the multiplayer, but it's not much fun if you suck at it :P.
