I don't have my Wii hooked up online yet, is there anyway to turn the red standby light off when I'm not playing? Or does it just stay on all the time?

Even if you're not hooked up online all Wii owners should keep their consoles on standby as soon as they get it set up
If everything is good then no problems
If something is wrong then it'll show up faster then just playing games which means that you're sure to get it fixed under warranty.
There's not one good reason to not leave standby on, for any user.

Yeah there is. While it may not seem like it takes up much energy, over a year that is a huge waste of energy that is actually being used. The Wii is an energy parasite and there is no need for it to be using that little energy if you are not playing it. You can just as easily get any new messages when you turn the Wii on.

Seriously?
I bet i can name 50 other electronic devices in your house that require much more energy than your Wii.

Well, turning it off while on vacation couldn't hurt.

Yeah, and so can I. The fact of the matter is that it wastes energy (hence it's a parasite) and produces a carbon footprint that does not need to be created. Leaving any electronic device plugged in is an energy parasite and is wasting needless energy. But I guess for you guys, saving 12 bucks a year doesn't matter. If that is the case I'll give you my address and you can send me that 12 bucks every year.

Why complain about $12 a year when gas costs you $5 a gallon?

Because for the most part oil is still used to create electricity, which in turn adds to the price of gas.

No, I'm actually concerned with a lot more than that. America's dependence on foreign oil, global warming, pollution in general (not as part of global warming). So I do actually turn my Wii off completely. I'm plugged into a surge strip. But hell, who cares about the planet these days anyway (sarcasm for those that didn't figure it out).

I wish there were 299,999,999+ more Americans that shared your frame of mind.
I support energy conservation and all that jazz, but it's annoying when you come across someone who tries to push their philosophy on you that you're killing the earth if you don't change every aspect of your life. Something as miniscule as activating the standby mode of your Wii doesn't make you a bad person or an energy hog. It's not wasting energy, it's being used for something that we choose. If you don't believe that I suggest you power down your computer right now because it's an energy parasite. You're free to make your own decisions on how you live your life. I have the right to pay that much more in my electric bill each year because im using it, it's not being wasted.ECG_24
Actually I'm on a laptop which is a lot better than a PC as it only requires to be plugged in when it needs to be charged. But, I wasn't pushing my "philosphy" on anybody. I was stating my opinion, which last time I checked I'm allowed to do. I whether you are "using" that energy or not when Wii is on standby can be easily debated both ways, so there is no point in starting that up.
Bottom line is, I stated what I did because Jaysonguy, IMO, made it seem like everybody that owns a Wii and that connects online should keep it on standby because there is reason not to. I gave a reason, and to many it is a reasonable one, yet a lot of people like to say it is stupid or what not.

So it's reasonable to a lot of people, and it's stupid to a lot of people?
I LOL'd.
But anyway, a lot more people think it's stupid.
Until polar bears start mating in my swimming pool, I'm not unplugging my Wii for fear of hurting the environment.

Ssssshhhh, stop pointing out my flaw :P. Besides, I could care less what people do. I might care about the environment, but I myself and guilty of doing somethings that are not good for the enivorment as well as realizing some people just don't care. The bottom line is that I really was trying to show that, whether Jaysonguy wants to realize or not, there is a good reason to unplug your Wii and that reason is if you want to not have it use absolutely no energy when you are not playing it :D. But whatever, it seems that only certain people on this forum understand the concept of an opinion and others that just keep repeating what other people have said (like the people that don't realize I do unplug my Wii and that is not the point I am trying to make).
