What do you think they could do to make a new version of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk that separates its image from the old Wii. I am still explaining to people that the Wii U is not just a controller add-on for the original Wii.

Mark "Wii U" on the brand instead of "Wii."

Improve the speaker quality and power.

Add a rechargeable battery that lasts longer.

Rearrange and increase button real estate.

Increase IR range, but that may have to do with the receiver.

Add flat analog stick to Wiimote akin to 3DS.

Add B button on top and replace it with R and ZR.

Add a second trigger button on the Wiimote to create parity with other controllers.

Replace 1 and 2 with X and Y. Improve squishy shoulder buttons on Nunchuck.

Change C and Z to L and ZL.

Bring the PNI Magnetic Sensor along with improved gyroscope and an accelerometer into the new controller. Source

Edit*

Add clickable buttons to both analog sticks.

A,B,X,Y should replace the area where the D-Pad presides on the Wiimote.

The Wiimote is so limited in its button placement, its a creative block for developers. We should have controller that has the precision and accuracy of the Pro Controller with the modern innovations of the Wii Remote.

Those changes would be great, it's crazy that the Wiimotes don't already come with an internal rechargeable battery

As long as the button placement doesn't make them awkward to use with FPS, I'll gladly accept it. It's almost flawless with FPS now.

The wii remote plus should have had internal rechargeable batteries from the start without the need of buying third party stuff.

I would like improvements to be made on the remotes only if they'll be put to use this and next gen.

Nintendo already did a redesign of the Wii-mote. If only a very minor one, by moving the sync button to the outside of the Wii-mote instead of the inside of the battery housing.

I like the ideas for improving the Wii-mote that you have listed. Maybe Nintendo will use those ideas for a better controller?

They need to redesign it again. That wasn't enough and having a controller that says "Wii U" on it is a logical way to combat a still rampant misinformation train attached to the Wii U.

Maybe it would have to be a next gen console that has these controller ideas, but its a controller that could be used functionally the same as the Pro Controller while still have IR and motion controls (and motion controls of the GamePad are much better than previous motion controls due to magnetic orientation). So I think theres a nice place for it on the convoluted controller platform of the Wii U.

Honestly, since the Wii U is meant to be the sequel to the Wii they should have done this in the first place. They should have named it Wii 2 to avoid all the confusion they caused (seriously Nintendo...! Sony and Microsoft have shown you don't need to be creative with console names. Simple numbers does well enough and consumers will easily understand them). Then, if they really wanted to, include the gamepad as a vital part of the console, but ALSO their new improved Wii-mote. It's a sequel remember, Nintendo! You didn't give it an all new name like "Gamer Box". If it's a sequel thenit needs to act like it. I feel like if they had've done this than they would have done a little better.

i dont think there is much point in upgrading the wiimote and nunchuck for the wiiu at this stage. the wiimote is not standard as it is and having a new one would make that even less so. chances are any game that would use the wimote and nunchuck on the wiiu would stick with the current model. the time to instroduce an improved controller is when a new console is ontroduced (some exceptions to that rule such as the dual shock 3 for the PS3).

however there is a lot of room for improvement. if nintendo decide to go back to the wiimote and nunchuck for their next console (and i hope they do) here are a few improvements i would like to see.

1) improved motion sensors accross the board. wiimotion + is pretty good but im sure things have improved since. the motion sensor in the current nunchuck is rubbish and badly needs an upgrade.

2) clickable analogue stick on the nunchuck.

3) replace the C button with a clickable scroll wheel like the one you would find on a mouse (Placed horizontally rather than vertical). this would make weapon switching in a FPS easier for example.

4) replace the A button in the center of the wiimote with 2 buttons that are shaped as part of the side of the wiimote (kinda like the triggers on the gamepad.).

5) Move the speaker down to the bottom of the wiimote around where the external connector is located. the would allow the 1 and 2 buttons to be moved up and be in easier reach.

6) make the wiimote a little bit wider (just a couple of CM) and add buttons 3 and 4.

7) replace the Z and B buttons with minature versions of the triggers found in the gamecube controller.

Should have had the improve wiimote as suggested by TC as the primary controller for Wii U. :P I'll just be glad with 1 uniform controller..& do away with multiple types & also one that doesn't cost $150 to buy :P ...the devs will be happy dealing with 1 controller scheme rather than mutiple different controllers. :P

The point of the Wiimote was supposed to be simplicity. It was designed so that everyone from small children to the elderly could play with little learning curve. All these upgrades would defeat the purpose. It would be better if you just stuck with the pro controller.

This would be a Pro Controller essentially.

Times have changed, bringing simplicity to a passive gaming audience no longer means 1 button controllers. It has more to do with interconnectivity and viral gameplay. Having proper button placement so buttons like the 1 and 2 are deemed useless unless you are playing horizontally NES style is a terrible idea and a constant bottleneck for developers.

This may be a controller for next gen as some have mentioned, but it needs to be voiced either way. I do not want a controller that has motion controls and IR trapped by terrible design of button placement and the only other option is to use a controller that doesn't use those innovations.

lol its why other controller schemes are more popular. Its also why they created a gamecube controller adapter for Wii U. I agree that its more of a next gen thing but redesigning the controller at this point would be pointless. Especially when they already have other things that will do what you have mentioned. The Pro controller for example. What really needs to happen is more games embracing the pro controller and not including wiimote support. Although I do agree with the battery and the speaker quality.

Whether its this gen or next. The same mistake cannot be made. If its next gen then the controller needs to have innovations tied to a competitive design. If its this gen then it is a redesign that could optionally allow you to play games that are Pro Controller supported and Wiimote/Nunchuk compatible as well.

Pro Controller only games are present on the console, but all that really suggests is that you could play PS4 and XO games with better graphics in the same fashion. If Nintendo is going to be the weaker console then its strengths need to shine in its innovations.

Unnecessary it works just fine the way it is. It does not need an integrated battery get yourself some rechargeable double A's. The only thing I thought they could have updated is the speaker on the wiimote plus.

Not unnecessary. I already do have rechargeable AA's. That doesn't mean tons of less dedicated consumers bother to do the same. Also a new controller even with just a recognizeably new look and Wii U branding will drive home the fact that this is not the original Wii.

Hmm I've been doing some thinking... I think the last thing Nintendo needs is ANOTHER controller. It already has the standard Wii remote. Wii Motion Plus. Classic Controller Pro for the Wii. (is that what its called?) The traditional controller for the Wii U. The Gamepad itself. Soon the gamecube controller will be included. Developers are already hard-pressed to develop games that everyone can play on this console. They already have to take in consideration that some may, or may not, have a wii mote. They may still be using the classic controller pro for the Wii. They may have neither of those and instead have the traditional controller.

Nope. This would have to be the last thing Nintendo needs. If anything, they should have just released the console bundled with this redesign wiimote in the first place, along with the new traditional controller. That way developers would only have to worry about two controllers (and chances are every Wii U owner would have them), and Nintendo wouldn't have to somehow market an over-complicated, niche tablet controller.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news to you but that will NEVER happen. Sure the Wii was Nintendo's most successful console not including the mobile gaming side of things but they have already moved on from it and motion gaming in general. Why should they care about wasting money and resources into something that will take away people's attention from the touch screen gamepad they are trying to promote? You didn't see them redesign the gamecube controller for use with the Wii did you..... it's just not gonna happen. But I guess there's nothing wrong with wishful thinking.
