On GAF, there's a thread that says Nekkei is reporting there's a software install feature for the 3DS!

Nintendo has packed 3DS with so many features that it's not even promoting some of the major ones. Today's Nikkei detailed one such silent feature: software install.

According to the paper, gamers will be able copy 3DS software to internal memory. Multiple games can be stored with the system in this fashion. You'll be able to switch between games by selecting a title from the system's main menu.

The paper notes that due to this feature, there'll be no need to swap cartridges. When outside of the home, you won't need to carry game cartridges with you.

Nikkei is a financial paper, so it obviously didn't get into the specifics on how this installation system will work. We'll have to wait for Nintendo to provide clarification.

If this is true I'll go bonkers! I'd love the idea of having a bunch of games on my system without having to swap carts! The DS carts are tiny so this is AWESOME NEWS!!!

And what's the potential? Downloadable DS games? GBA/GBC/GB virtual console? *mind blown* :o

Sounds cool, although there must be a catch - if it exists in its listed state it would be way too easy to abuse, and Nintendo has always been hardcore anti-piracy.

This almost singlehandedly solves the biggest advantage of downloadable vs. retail games. But something's not quite right here. It would be all too easy to just grab a "friend's" (or rental store's) cartridge and copy it to internal memory. 3DS is supposed to have enhanced anti-piracy capability...

I suppose they could provide some sort of hardware-ID for each cartridge, and combine it with an online registration procedure which only allows you to copy it to internal storage once.

I don't like the thought of going completely digital, for a number of reasons. First you are possibly putting a lot of people out of jobs, that manufacture the game cartridges and cases and manuals. Then there's the whole thing about how maybe this could somehow make piracy easier. And I've already seen how DLC on the XBox 360 works and how it drains money out of people, and I don't like that.

REPORT: Iphone, blackberry, Android have had this much longer. Sigh... Nintendo keeps playing catch up, and it gets people excited.

Android does it the best so easy to make your own apk file and just push it to the phone... Hell most things don't even have DRM so it's possible to rip APK files and let anybody without root access install them. It's a double bladed sword, but it's open.

Nintendo loves their closed source crap. They will never release SDKs to the general public so they can't actually make it suck less.

Wow, that's awesome. Being able to install multiple games and not having to carry all the carts. Still, this will make the system much more vulnerable to pirates.

Requiring less work in this world is a good thing. We should step away from the idea that we need to create work. The problem is that less work and costs doesn't translate into more wealth. There are people at top sucking up that money. That's why i think we need to cap the max profit and max pay of the top honchos.

Makes sense, the new DS had a "menu" button. I'd hate to think it would be just for 3DS Ware (like DSiWare). Whole 3DS games would be great.

It puts specialty retailers out of business, that's enough to make it harmful to the economy.

It's only for the updates when the 3DS is in sleep mode. That is how Nintendo will get away with automatic updates in sleep mode even when the game isn't in the system.

SakusEnvoy

They could also just store the particular 3DS's serial number to the cartridge itself. I recall reading that Sandisk has developed a type of flash memory which can only be written to once.

Either way properly implemented this feature could encourage the sales of new games, without completely taking away the consumer's second sale right.

Neither the iPhone, Blackberry, Android, or any other form of smartphone gives you a physical copy. Which means you cannot rent, nor trade or sell any part of your game at a later date.

Hmm, you could be right; this paper might just be misinterpreting this feature for a full game install.
