I have a regular SDTV or 480i tv but on the back it has an option for component cables. I was just curious of why is my TV SD but has Component cables as an option? I do own Wii component cables and can see a difference in brightness and texture, but in the settings it wont let me switch to 480p.

Most newer SDTVs have component inputs. It won't give you 480p, since the TV is only 480i, but it still improves the image quality.

SDTVs with component inputs but no true progressive scan support are not uncommon. Component cables will still produce a superior picture and allow some progressive scan playback, such as a DVD player.

A TV that supports only 480i/480p is an EDTV.
