Second party developers are awesome. For Nintendo they have Retro Studios (Metroid Prime 1, 2, and 3), Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness), Camelot (Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Golden Sun), Game Freak (Pokemon Games), Noise (Custom Robo), HAL Labratory/Sora (Smash bros. Games), Nexon (Maplestory PC, War Rock PC), Alpha Dream (Mario and Luigi games) and yeah. So they have good quality third parties.

Edit: Nintendo also used to own Rare (makers of Perfect Dark, Banjo Kazooie) and Factor 5 (Star Wars Rogue Squadrons).

What GS forumites refer to as "second party" developer, console makers refer to as "first-party internal development studios".

Here's a rough analogy using cars. Think of Delphi and Napa. Delphi and Napa both make parts, but Delphi makes only GM parts, Napa makes parts for all manufacturers'cars. You could consider Delphi a second party, and Napa a third party. Retro is like Delphi, Activision is like Napa. Second party developers are technically independent companies, but they're not really because they're usually owned or controlled by the main company, and they only support their main company.

Rare was a 2nd party developer, because Nintendo owned a large stake in the company, and they made only Nintendo games, but they were a legal seperate entity.

Retro is not a 2nd party: they're entirely owned by Nintendo, and are in the 1st party umbrella.

What we generally refer to as "2nd party" studios are companies that are legally and financially seperate from the main manufacturer, although that main company typically has a non-controlling financial stake in the 2nd party.

Silicon Knights is not a 2nd party (although they were, during the GCN era).

Isn't Monolith somewhat owned by Nintendo from what I read in a magazine so that would make them a second party developer as well right?

Your information is inaccurate. Silicon knights is now owned by microsoft, and Factor 5 was never owned by Nintendo, they just choose to develope specifaclly for it.
