if you have the cash to burn, why not. if you have plans on buying the 3ds and dont have a ds now and have lived peacefully without one for all this time i say keep saving the cash to buy the 3ds you want.
I had some extra money a couple of days ago and had every intention of buying a new ds but decided to wait for the 3ds and bought some ps3 games instead. That's my take on it.
Wait a few more weeks until E3 when we get more information on 3DS. Then itt'll be easier to decide whether or not it's worth a longer wait.
Unless there's something you're dying to play though, I would just wait (the lineup isn't even that exciting this year). It may be out before Christmas.
I had the same dilemma, I bought a DS used with no regrets so far. Seeing as I'm late in the DS game, I can get lots of stuff cheap, and entertain myself while the 3DS gains a larger library/drops in price/comes up with new iterations improving on the launch version.

Yah I don't know if I want to either. I always end up wanting the latest DS though, I don't understand it lol :(. I probly will get it, just dunno when. For OP, just wait til E3 to see what they say release wise and go from there.

Yeah, if it turns out the first 3DS has very dim screens, like the first gba and DS, i would be hesitant about buying it when it first comes out. I got the ds lite around the time it came out.
Wait and see what the 3DS is like this summer when they unveil it. If you decide then and there on the spot you don't want it, buy a DS. If you think you need more time to think, wait until the 3DS comes out and then make a decision. Either way, you can buy DS games online.
