I saw this game and it immediately got my attention, and I was this close to buying it but I didn't know if I should because I havn't as of yet played any of the other Metroid games. Should I play the other games first or would it be fine to just start playing this one?

Well I may be an obvious Metroid fan but still I say yes! It's amazing, super fun, and has extremely high production values and a great story. Definitely should be your next buy. Hope this helps :)

You might want to play Super Metroid first, as it would enable you to better understand the opening cutscene in Other M, but I wouldn't call it a requirement.

It's not necessary. You can enjoy any Metroid game without playing the others.

I will always recomend a Metroid game when I can, but you don't need to buy the others. To get most of the enjoyment out of Other M I recomend reading up on the stories behind Metroid II Return of Samus and Super Metroid. Those two games get nods and references all over the place in the latest installment of the series.

The game tells you everything you need to know. There may be some nostalgia throughout the game, but you will understand everything that goes on without playing any other game.

You will be able to enjoy it. And I will also say that you may enjoy it much more than some Metroid fans that ended up disappointed at how the story and characters were handled.

The game is fantastic.

Sure. But lemme tell you something, after picking Metroid Other M up, pick up Metroid Prime Trilogy and download Super Metroid via Virtual Console. Then in whatever room your Wii is set up, block all forms of light, put on some sunglasses, put on epic music full blast, turn on AC full blast, get somecute girls dressed as cat maids, and begin playing. You won't regret it at all.

I would. At 8 bucks you're hard pressed to find a better representation of one of the best franchises in video game history.

Not mandatory, but highly recommended. Also, it's a better game. And I stand by that.

Go for it.. I thought it was the best Metroid since Super Metroid (beating Metroid Prime). However, if you're looking for a quick rundown on what you should expect, then I would give Super Metroid a whirl before playing Other M.

Hope this helps. :)

Yeah, get it. But you should really play the other games sometime, though! The Prime games are amazing, and Super Metroid is gold.

While I would definately recomend you play the old Metroids, its not a must. Just go to the Nintendo Channel and watch the "Metroid and Me" refreasher video. It'll get you caught up on the story.

Only one before this (Timeline wise) you can't get on the VC is Return of Samus. This game alone is the reason why the 3DS needs a game boy virtual console. it is a GREAT game. I had such a blast playing it. Just wish I wouldn't have lost the game over the years. :(

It's not necessary, but for eight dollars you might as well download super metroid.

I recommend you get both super metroid and metroid other m. Super metroid will be the best 8 dollars you have ever spent.

Other M is a good Metroid game to start with for those unfamiliar with the series. It's both easier (although not super easy) and more streamlined than any other Metroid game. After you've beaten Other M you should backtrack a bit to Super Metroid and the Prime games. That is if you enjoyed Other M.

^This and/or go to the nintendo channel on your Wii and watch the Metroid and Me video they have on there. It can also be found on Gametrailers.com. That will get you somewhat caught up on the series up to Other M.

HAH, epic comment. But really, I think I will get Super Metroid and the Metroid Prime Trilogy along with Other M since it is so highly recommended here. Thanks everybody!

Watch the few trailers that are out for Other M. Like the Samus story recap. Though some of the throwbacks to the other games won't click, I think you would actually like this more having NOT played all the other games. Just my opinion though.

The only Metroid game I have played before Other M was Prime 2. And the stories aren't even related. And the game controls are very different. The trailers caught my attention immediately as well and I bought it and I absolutely love it. Best single player Nintendo Wii game to date in my opinion.

Story wise you should play at least Super Metroid to help you fully understand many situations, though is not a big requirement, you could just make some research before.

Gameplay wise, I wouldn't recommend it as your first Metroid to play, you can get a wrong idea of what a Metroid game is about. if you do, then you must play previous installments as soon as possible, Super Metroid or Metroid Prime are my suggestions, mostly the first one.
