Spore DS is very shallow and boring. I'd recommend Animal Crossing, and then Viva Pinata if you like games in this genre. Both games I mentioned are well made, and will offer more value for your money than Spore.
I got it since my computer can't work with spore (It's only 2 or 3 years old!!) so I got the ds one. Yes it's shallow it's still a good game so only get it if you can't get the pc one and you really want one.
I brought Spore DS on offer in Morrisons for £12 and I'd say it's worth it, however, I wouldn't pay full price for it. It's a decent game, it has quite nice visuals, although the camera is rather annoying. The creature creator is quite good, although each missions demands something from your creature and takes away the freedom of it. I would personally advise you to get the PC version myself but because it demands so much from your PC perhaps the DS one would be better if your PC can't run it.
Overall, the DS version isn't anything special but it's quite an entertaining game if you get in to it.
What's so great about Viva Pinata? I always here it's good, but what about it is good?

i would definitely suggest getting spore. I personally think that its very fun and time consuming. the graphics of the creatures are a little flat but the gameplay is pretty fun.
