I sense this kind of topic has been posted before or shunned?

Nonetheless, I'm asking for some advice here..

I only have one DS, the original (Blue) DS.. also known as the fat DS :P

I desperately wanted to 3DS when I found out Animal Crossing would makea comeback on the 3DS, but the lauch games are just horrible and the only game I can say I would buy would be Nintendogs & cats because it's an original and always fun to play game..

But, and I probably am being stupid, I didn't buy the 3DS at launch day so I feel if I buy it almost a week later.. I won't be able to reach the mainstream of players and discussions =/

Gimme some pros and cons while you're at it :) But I'll probably get it D:

Your DS fat is really old and could use a new update. The DS lite adn DSi are good choices.

I bought a 3DS b/c i am really excited for near future upcoming games like LoZ:OoT and I have no DS. I also was very interested in the 3D of the 3DS, and lets all be honest us early 3DS owners like haivng the latest tech. I was worried about the 3DS being on short supply like the wii and not being able to buy it as more 3DS games come out. For me it was more of a future proof purchase than a right now purchase, although I am enjoying catching up on some DS games. But again were early adapters, were buying the system at its most expensive price along with the games at their most expensive price. Were paying a premium to say we got the game/system early and enjoy it before others. I could have waited a couple of years and then picked one up at a reduced price along with cheaper prices on Street fighter or pilot wings. But I won't lie and I'll admit I enjoy having these things now.

Honestly I'd wait, get a DS Lite so you can have fun on the go while waiting for an improved 3DS system.

  • Virtual Console will soon be available that will offer oldschool handheld games such as Link's Awakening.
  • Zelda Ocarina of Time: remake to a game that many consider the best game ever, is set to release in June.
  • Lots of built in software you can have lots of fun with like Faceraiders, AR-cards and stuff like 3D camera.
  • Here's a list of 3DS games: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games

If you are still uncertain wait 2 months from now for E3 2011 for more info on unnanounced and announced games coming for 3DS this year and beyond.

Negatives are that the battery life is lower than the DS, especially if you play with the stereo 3D effect on. You can manage to squeeze out more playtime if you lower the brightness level which shouldn't be an issue to someone who is content with phat DS :P

It is rough around the edges so to speak but it's not an extreme situation as with PhatDS -> DS Lite. There probably will be a lite version of 3DS in approximately 2 years.

If you're upgrading at this point then the 3DS makes the most sense. If you buy a new DS now then it's going to only be for games you already own since new DS releases are going to start becoming scarce.

As for the launch titles, they're not as horrible as you might think. They are for the most part excellent games, but for whatever reason most reviewers just didn't give them a fair chance (even the much maligned Steel Diver is far better than its review scores would lead you to believe), so you're better off just ignoring the professional review and going with the general consensus of gamers.

I just bought the red DSI XL because i didn't like the look of the 3DS but i tried it for the first time at the weekend and im blown away by it, it is an awesome handheld so im gonna pick one up once animal crossing comes out for it. If you have a big ds games collection i would recommend upgrading to either the DSI or the DSI xl because its made me play all my old ds games all over again, it looks so much better then my ds phat and i dont regret buying it at all. If you arent interested in the launch titles just wait for a bit, im sure some awesome games will be out soon enough.

As much as people hype the 3DS i would wait until more games come out. Probably when a bundle is released or wait a few more months. If you have the $ i would pick up a DSi / DSi XL bundle. The 3DS is a nice piece of hardware but it's nothing you must have right away.

Since your old DS is archaic, go ahead and upgrade to the 3DS. Sure, the DS Lite or DSi are cheaper, but it doesn't make much sense to spend money on another machine when you know eventually that you're going to get the 3DS anyway. If you love Nintendogs, you'll enjoy Nintendogs+Cats, and you play that and your other DS games while you wait for Animal Crossing and any other games that will come out in the future.

Just get it. But if you don't have the money now, wait until later this year. E3 this year should sell you and a lot of other hesitant gamers on the 3ds.

I'm still playing the heck out of my DSi XL, so the 3DS is probably gonna have to wait 6 months to a year.

You may want to consider upgrading to a lite or DSi, but there aren't too many terrific releases for the 3DS yet, so it might be a better Idea just to wait.

Incorrect. There are several terrific games for the 3DS. Don't listen to the reviewers because they really blew it.

My opinion, as another "phat" DS owner, is that there's no point in replacing it with anything BUT the 3DS and any future revisions. The Lite and DSi will be obsoleted as development is concentrated on the 3DS. However, the battery life leaves a lot to be desired in its stock state, and it only becomes decent with one of those Nyko slice batteries. That's what keeps me waiting for a 3DS Lite.

I disagree. I believe that moving forward people will still want to purchase the DSi / XL for the sole purpose of just playing DS games.

I'd get it if I were you, Street Fighter 4 3D and Ghost Recon are great games to start off with.

If you think it's going to get games you want to play before the price drops, go ahead. If not, you can wait. Is your DS still working properly?

You do realize that the 3DS is backwards compatible with DS games. Yes, there's a slight loss of visual quality due to the differing resolutions, but the extent of the degradation has been greatly exaggerated by some.

Nintendo released the Game Boy Micro after the DS was already out, and it sold over two million units. So yeah, I do believe that some people will continue to buy the existing DS models rather than get a 3DS.

I have played serveral of my DS games. I really havent seen any problems yet. Maybe I am just playing the games that just happen to have the least issues.

It affects all DS games, it just probably doesn't bother you. That's good.

I can see it if I'm specifically looking for it, but I quickly stop noticing once I'm actually playing.

For me there are no games I want for the 3ds, so why pay $250+tax to play ds games? Plus I absolutly love the bigger screens on my dsi xl, so I am waiting to see if nintendo will releases a 3ds xl. Here's my advice, hardware doesn't matter as much as the games do. Don't waste your money just because its popular and new. Buy it if it lets you play the games you want to play. The less you spend on hardware the more you can spend on games.

I'd wait until the next hardware iteration comes out... My first DS was a DSi XL...
