Should I keep my Wii in yellow standby or red off mode when not using it?

When I turn my Wii off the power light stays yellow. The only way to make it go red is to hold the power button down for a few seconds.

When I am not using my Wii, should I just leave it in the yellow state or should I always hold the power button down to make it red?

Also, if I should make it red, is there a way to do this using the Wii Remote?

Thanks for any advice.

My light is all ways yellow when I am not using it, that means it is on standby? Only time I get a red is if I unplug if I am moving it around.

Why not just leave it on yellow? If it's on red, that means you won't get any messages about updates or anything.

If you are not going to use the Wii for long periods of time (couple of days) its best to turn it off completely (RED).

Leave the wii in yellow (that's wiiconnect24 on), when not using it for days, just unplug it.

Both lights mean that it's in standby. When it's yellow, it's still connected to the internet.

Thanks. I went into the Wii settings and set the standby mode option to off. Now when I hit the power button on the system or the controller, it goes right to Red (the Yellow thing never happens now).

Don't let anyone here scare you into keeping it in red mode, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it being yellow. My console's been yellow for over two years now, nothing bad has happened. It's in perfect condition. You'd like to know if there's an update or message even if the console's off wouldn't you? Leave it in Standby, it's fine.

Yeah I agree with you on this. I think people are a bit paranoid with their consoles. A giant PS3 thread on whether it's safe to keep it off with the red light on or whether you should shut the console off completely by switching the main power switch on the back had a lot of people saying they switch it off from the back whenever they are not playing, which is totally crazy! Nevertheless, I'm keeping the standby option off on my Wii so that it goes into red when I hit the power button just because I like the idea of a red light on electronics when they are off rather than a yellow light (I have a DVD player, PS3 and Wii all lined up together and its much nicer to just glimpse over to make sure they are all showing red lights whenever I want to make sure all of my stuff is turned off).

Yeah, no need to be paranoid about your Wii breaking . You have a Wii, not a 360. I'd keep it yellow if you have other friends registered on your console, coz that's the only way to know you have a message without going in the address book. System updates etc are important too. If you keep it in red then you'll never get that comforting blue light haze that comes when you have a message waiting for you. :) I wish Nintendo would release some kind of update though. It seems like it's been a long time. I'd like to see some content for the Mii channel especially (but I'm sure that's not gonna happen.)

I can't help but think some odd opinions are surfacing here. Leave it on yellow if you want WiiConnect24 features, yeah, but why would you leave it on Red? Red is just...off, you might as well plug it out - why waste money?

I would say turn the wii off into Red mode as that way you'll save energy.

Still if you want to receive messages and e-mails while playing the wii then use yellow standby mode.

Except that not everyone has the same experience as you. In those same two years, I've had two different Wii systems burn up because of the yellow stand-by mode... And ever since I started keeping it in the red-off mode, I've had zero issues.

One advantage to "red mode" is that when you turn it on (at least with an RGB SCART connection) my TV switches to the correct channel on its own. Why it cannot do this in 24 hour connect mode I don't know. Would be a sensible, and easy tweak for the next OS upgrade.

By the way - mine has been on yellow for most of the time since December 2006, and I have had no problems.

On yellow the wii is using less power than a lightbulb, also you get your updates and messages while it's on yellow. Leave it on yellow.

I think yellow is the same as red, except that when it's yellow it's receiving updates... It's not like generating the yellow color uses more electricity/heats up the Wii more than generating the red color.

I don't have a link, but I have seen many topics about this happening on Gamespot and elsewhere. When it's on yellow, the Wii generates heat but the fan is not running. Over time, this can cause the system to get very hot. This can fry the GPU. I'm pretty sure the Wii's manufactured closer to launch were more susceptible to this, although I personally wouldn't risk it. There's really no reason to keep it on yellow. If you want to check your messages, just do it when you turn on your Wii.

I keep it on red. The console gets somewhat hot when it's in standby, and without a fan running, I've heard it can do damage to Wii's GPU.

I have had my Wii since launch and have always kept it on standby mode. I just went through my second ac adaptor. At first I thought it was a fluke, but I will certainly be turning it to red from now on.

But if you keep it on red, how much power goes into the Wii? I usually unplug the Wii when not in use (like before I go to bed at night).

It's a basic understanding: Red means that the Wii is off and WiiConnect24 is off Yellow means that Wii is off but the Internet connection is still on. I see no difference at all...unless someone has an obsession with yellow, or red.

After I ordered my new ac apaptor from the Nintendo website, I messed around with the Wii some more and got it to work again after I had it unplugged for a little while. When I called and spoke with someone at Nintendo this morning to cancel my order, he told me that I probably blew a fuse in the ac adaptor. He told me that if you unplug both ends for a few minutes and then plug everything back in, that solves this problem. Just in case anyone else comes across this problem.

Surely if the Wii is on 'Yellow' then you get the blue light when there's a update or email for you, however, in red mode you get nothing.

If you leave it in Red mode you may as well switch it off at the plug!

yellow keeps searching for online firmware updates. keep it yellow if it doesnt bother you to have to update everytime you go online. keep it red if you dont want to risk your wii cooler (it stays warmer than normal because its actually turned on). nothing will happen, but some people are scared of touching their console turned "off" and see that its hot. and i never managed to let it red from the wiimote, so i just gave up and stand up to turn it off

Yellow = Standby mode

There's really no point to keep it in standby mode. If you leave it Red when it's off you'll still get your messages when you turn it on. Standby only uses up more electricity which if you're environmentally conscious and/or want to save money on your electric bills leave it on red. Also standby increases the chances of it overheating. You do need standby mode to use the weather and news channels. If you want to do that just turn on standby when you want to use those channels and then turn off standby when you're done.

For me I always unplug the Wii when I'm not using it so it's not even on red. I don't like wasting electricity I guess.

http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-4.htm

Leaving the Wii on Yellow overnight is a bit wasteful just to get the odd message from Nintendo or to get your News and Weather just that bit quicker. If you still want to get messages from Nintendo then keep Wii Connect 24 turned on but turn the Wii to Red (hold down the power button for a few seconds) when your not using it.

Skip your shower tomorrow. That way you'll save enough electricity to leave your Wii in standby for the rest of its life.

Both yellow and red are standby modes. The only difference is that the former keeps WC24 on, while the latter doesn't. Keeping WC24 off reduces the power drain while in standby, but it doesn't eliminate this completely. The only way to truly turn your console off is by unplugging it.

I turn mine off into yellow mode and just unplug it, as the outlet is right beside the Wii.
