wow its getting worse...now we've got people asking if they should RENT!!! a ceratin game...it was bad enough with: should i buy this every 2 minutes...for god sake its like $4 dollars!!! just rent it!!!
Red Steel is fun and unique enough, so I think everyone should give it a try. Honestly, it's the only FPS game where I actually felt like I was the one holding a gun, instead of just controlling a guy who was holding a gun.
But the way I see it, I can't remember the last time a game that scored so damn low (5.5) sold so damn much (over 1 million). The closest I can think of is The Matrix, but that was a 6.6 game and had brand-recognition going for it. So either the score is too low (I'd place it in the 7's myself), or the game is actually far more fun than the reviewers made it out to be.
Bit of advice to the thread creator... stop being so cheap and rent the game! As a general rule renting is there so you can try out the game to know if it's worth buying, so if you're so cheap that you have to ask around before you shell out a couple of bucks, then maybe you shouldn't be gaming, cuz it's an expensive hobby!
Definetly rent it. Spend some time in single player and have some friends come over and try multiplayer as well. If you're friends are willing to play it from time to time and you like what you play you know it's a good investment to buy. Every once in a while I see it's $30 at best buy. Since a few of my friends own Wiis one of us will get one multiplayer game and another will buy another and bring it over some time. The party ones don't have any story so it works out pretty well.
