We've known about online cheating for ages, but the newest Nintendo game to be attacked by it seems to be Mario Kart Wii, and unlike the usual idiots who just cheat in races, these guys are messing with the high score boards and effectivly breaking a portion of the game for the rest of us (that we pay for when we buy the game)

http://www.n-europe.com/news.php?nid=11695&loginerror=2

So, what do you guys think, should these people be banned? I don't care how harsh it seems, this isn't like an excidental traffic infringment, these people know exactly what they're doing, they've even palstered thier names for everyone to see. The high score board would keep track of friends and system codes, so, in my opinion, Nintendo should just ban them, hopefully from the whole online Wii system, make an example out of them. It'd sure solve the problem, and if that seems harsh, make it a timed ban.

Either way, Nintendo has to do something. Keep in mind we're not talking about idiots who make themselves go faster on online matches that you can just leave and forget about, we're talking about people who destroy online systems, in this case, permenantly nullifying high score lists.

EDIT: acctually, a perma-ban from the game the infringment occured on (Mario Kart) and a temporary ban accross the whole system I think would be the best solution.

Is it even possible for a complete ban? Banning a specific friend code account for a single game would probably work, but could Nintendo ban them from every game?

Forever. Otherwise, they won't learn. They'll just keep coming back if you suspend them and cheat. It's the same with any online game, really.

If these people are so concerned about what record they have, I say hit them where it really hurts. There's no need to ban anyone; if possible, just make their records worse by either taking away wins or giving them losses for everytime they cheat. Eventually, some of these people will get the hint and not resort to underhanded tactics to help them win games. Problem solved... that is, if it's possible.

I suppose it depends on how their servers were set up, and if specific Wii's can be identified and blocked.

What...? You understand you're ruining a perfectly good experience for others just for your 5 minutes of fun, right?

Cheaters, glitchers, and hackers are all just sore losers that don't understand the concept of "fun" in a video game. They win, but through pathetic means that wreck the experience for everyone. It's like that for every game and it's frustrating trying to play a game when someone else is destroying the game.

I think it should be possible, i mean, we at least know it would be via friend codes, as every online game is linked using them. I would think though as this is part of an online score list, Nintendo would have to store some sort of ID to tell people apart. The friend code is obvious, but that will only allow banning on a single game, but I think they may also store the wii system code, it wouldn't take much effort to do and Nintendo should have considered that it may come in useful down the track if they do need to identify a user...

Just ban them on that certain game, i am only saying it concerning this situation. If someone had done something but accident and which others considered cheating they should not be permanently banned as it would be very unfair, just a temporary ban at the most.

It doesn't sound to me like we're talking about the kind of cheating that can be on accident here. Nor does it sound like the kind of thing your friend you invite over does on your Wii while you aren't paying attention. While not explicitely stated, this sounds like intentional and blatant hacking to alter statistical rankings in the game, and it should not be tolerated under any circumstances if Nintendo wants anyone to take their online market seriously. If it were something as mild as taking a shortcut and ticking someone off because you came out ahead of them, or something like snaking, that's laughable. What is part of the game cannot be cheating.

Ban forever from all online Wii play.

Well if theyre screwing around with highscore board that's one thing. If they just learned to snake in the game and are good at it that's another. I don't see why people complain about snaking in MK DS. The people who learn wanted to win really badly, if you want to win really badly... well I guess you know what you have to do.

But since there hacking the leader boards yeah they should be banned.

I'm very glad most of the people who posted in this thread don't work for the government.

For starters, the punishment must be relative to the crime - a man who has modified his stats has not modified the game, only the scoreboard. THerefore the only relevant retributive action is one that affects his ability to operate the scoreboard.
Secondly, Nintendo will never completely ban someone from the Wifi. Ultimately they're a corporation that's concerned about making money. It's hard for them to make money while actively preventing people from playing their games.

Nintendo should fix the method that these people are using to hack their scoreboards and reset the offender's scores back to zero.

I know this topic has been up for quite a while but I think Nintendo should ban them from the game it does spoil other players games plus why hack it your not going to win anything plus it proves hackers don't know how to play the game right. I have been in games with hackers on Mario Kart Wii during battles and it's annoying now I hardly go on it what's the point when hackers are destroying a good game. Nintendo should brick there Wii so that it will no longer work and also ban the players IP from getting any access to Nintendo games.

I seen it before when I saw the leaderboards for some tracks and thought how is that even possible? For Grumble Volcano they got :20 seconds and I'm just sitting there like wtf? thats like a 3:00 min. track. So this is whats going on. Yeah ban them. Kick em out. Nintendo probably won't do anything, but they should cuz its just not fair to let them stay on top for cheating.

No, I don't think they should be banned from a videogame because they cheat. Either banned for a certain amount of time, or Nintendo can remove all their scores and then put a mark beside their names so when people are racing against him/her, they know that the person they are racing against has a history of cheating.

They should add leadboards, stats, ranks, stuff like that to Brawl's online. And then fix the "against anyone" matches, cause they never connect.

I think developers should bring out updates to prevent these cheaters to continue their cheating ways, a ban, timed nor permanent is not the answer.

Ban forever from everything.Jaysonguy

Unbelievably, I agree with Jaysonguy 100%. (Please note that this will never happen again.)

Nintendo would probably never take as drastic a step as this, but they should be able to block them out with a mandatory system update that closes the cheating loopholes. I'm guessing this is the course of action they'll take, but who knows how long until it's up.

Nintendo should tighten up the code on their server side to make this kind of thing impossible/very difficult to do. While banning people sounds good I don't think it'd work in practice and it'd stir up a lot of bad publicity and potentially hit sales. People would then be afraid to be banned accidentally etc.

They need to give them the boot from the game for a while and reset their score if it's like MKWii. If they want to do it again, they can get the spike-toed boot from the game forever...
