I was kind of expecting the game to run short on hours, because of the many different outcomes within the game. But a short game with lots of replay value is fine by me, as long as the narrative doesn't come off as compressed. The thing he said about the transparency between the scare moments vs normal story and exploration moments is a Silent Hill hold over, it has always been like that to me because of the nightmare world. And for those that care, it got an 8.6, ok so now lets turn this into a topic about how that translate to a 7.5 on GS :P

I just tried to watch the video review, and it links to the X box 360 Modern warfare 2 video review.

I was like WTF!

but yeah, i guess a 7.5 from GS as well

Gorgeous.

Short.

Sadly, the gauge of the latter comes in top priority when buying a $50 game, so I sadly won't be pickin' it up. Looks to be enjoyable, though.:)

its a survival horror game of coarse it will be short just like old resident evil and silent hill games normally were shorter around 3-4 hours but with all the ways to play this game and with a few endings 5-6 hours can easily become 15-24 hours i was thinking it would be a 8.0 its good to see rebirth of survival horror and not crappy action or fps horror

The length in a game with all this replay value should be the last concern, like elbert said if you have 3 fairly unique playthroughs thats like 30 hours which is a whole hell of alot more than you usually get these days.

I might get it after Christmas, or when it's cheaper because I still got a ton of games to play that I'll get for Christmas. It does look really good though, so I'll try it at some point

I predict a solid 8.0 from GS, and that was a surprisingly good review from Matt.

From how they described it on the NVC podcast, I am really shocked it got such a high score. They made it sound very short with little replay value because the Psychological Profiling that the game does is merely cosmetic and not very deep.

Considering it's a sort of glorified remake (albeit a re-imagined one that's had tons of effort put into it), that's a damn good score. I'm still on the border because I'm not a horror fan and I actually have slight stress disorders that a horror game this intense could worsen, so I'm on the fence. Looks fantastic though.

I've been waiting for this remake ever since it was announced and checking out the score IGN gave it made me even more excited to play it. Reading the "Closing Comments" it seems like they made it more like Homecoming's gameplay but I guess they don't call it a remake for nothing and besides I liked Homecoming so I'm excited to the point that I can barely wait for Wednesday to come.

What makes the deal even sweeter is that it's been exactly 10 years since I first played the original on the PSX, this is the best present Konami could deliver to us fans of the series. Big thanks to Team Silent and the developers who made the series what it is today.

First of all i think your all crazy o, the nicest word that i can say for it is...garbagE!

i new your all gonna go defending it and explaining it and blah bllah bla shoved down your throat, with the multy choice thing how thats gonna extend the gameplay etc. It doesent extend anything! it just changes the next cutscene that will be trigerd! it doesent add new places to explore the town and do somthing new! and only 6 hours???? wtf! i mean honestly WTF! the graphics are so sharp and pixely, and the dumb bribed ign reviewer with his flash light explaining awesomnes is just so see trough that its funny, just funny. I hope theres more than one enemy in the game thats shown on every video and the ign review.

And another thing that honetly should be banned to do is pumping up the trailers with fake footage!

if you have a look at the trailer at:

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/memories-montage-silent-hill/59615

and have a look at any other gamplay footage or the ign review, the graphic are like 2 worlds! the one in the trailer even has bloom effect! lol, o konami...

What the heck are you talking about? You are factually wrong on some things there, buddy.

Anywho... What is up with short games this year? I know that length isn't everything ::snicker:: but 6 hours just ain't enough time for a $50 game. It's stuff like that that turned a lot of people away from a game like Madworld.

Everything else sounds good. Might give it a rent or maybe buy it when the price comes down (hopefully not soon, it'd be nice for a 3rd party game on the Wii to actually sell for a change. But when they put out a 6 hour game to a niche audience you cannot expect great things).

Short and sweet. Haven't you people ever played any other Silent Hill games? None of them are long. If I remember correctly I beat Silent Hill 3 in five hours with a friend. I think five or six hours is enough for a game like Silent Hill. If it goes on for too long, the horror effect is lost. I'm super excited about this game.

But from what Matt said, it seems like while there is some replay value, the new elements that come into play when you go through the game again are merely cosmetic, and don't really change up the dynamic or story of the game. It's a shame, 'cause a game such as this could really benefit from a more dynamic world-changing functionality.

I'm just a bit disappointed with the score. I definitely trust IGN's judgement – everything they said seemed completely valid – but the developers always seemed to be making certain features out so be a really important part of the game. It's a shame that the "character monitoring" system doesn't really have that big on an impact on the monsters or the environments. Also, I was really hoping that they would treat this game as a full-fledged part of the series. Instead, they seemed to let the idea that it is a spinoff hold back their ambition a little bit. A little disappointing considering how IGN made the game sound like the second coming when they first revealed the game in their "eyes-on".

Still, this is one of the Wii's prettiest and most ambitious titles, and it will be heartbreaking to see it fail. And hey, Silent Hill 3 only got an 8.8 and many consider it to be the best in the series.

Silent Hill games are always about this long for a first go, even shorter on subsequent ones. I can finish the original 3 in about 2 hours each, and Origins closer to one hour. Doesn't mean they aren't excellent games everytime I do play through them.

I dislike this new direction, and I also dislike the new direction Resident Evil 4 took, but I will not let my fanboyism detract from playing excellent games. I pre-ordered my copy about 3 release date delays ago so I will be picking this up as soon as it arrives.

Looking forward to it.

I'm not sure I want to spend a full $50 on a 6 hour game. I know the game is great, but that's too much for a game of that length. And for everone who says "all survival horror games are that short," so what? The original RE and SH games came out a while ago, and simply put: time's have changed. Last generation's great horror games, like Fatal Frame and Eternal Darkness were about 10 hours long and the great ones of this generation, Condemned and Dead Space, are longer. Times have changed and 6 hours is not an acceptable length anymore.

Well thats generally how most games with replay value are, they rarely every drastically change the game. The fact that it has multiple endings, characters appearance, attitudes, dialouge locations can all change. The path through the game can change, those are pretty substantial changes even if they are cosmetic. Its sort of like playing InFamous or Bioshock or Fallout 3 the karma shifts give it replay value but its simply cosmetic, it doesn't really alter the game. I don't know of any game that offers replay value like this that isn't simply cosmetic, its kind of unrealstic of Matt to expect anymore than that. You could probably play this game two or three times and experience a number of changes, its like playing Mass Effect over and over to try the different classes and experience the different dialouge tree's. So if game length is really more important to you than the experience, well you can probably get like a good 15 hours out of this and thats alot for a game these days.

This game is about quality not quantity. You have to look beyond the short length. If this game was too long it would get exhausting to always have to run away.

Its not a multiplayer frag fest so you already are buying this for a deep experience and not for pure hour to dollar value.

I like the the direction this series has taken as well as the one RE4 took, they went overboard with it in RE5 but it was a much needed and expertly executed direction change. I don't think they can go overboard with this, meaning the more they can make it about fear the better. I would say they probably need to work on the pacing more with the Nightmare world, basically find a way to not make it so predicatable as Matt says. That was the same problem Dead Space had, you got wise to it and knew when the scare moments were coming.

Does it matter, the game is going to tank regardless. Konami did not advertise or release enough retail copies.

Like the other guy said, It's about quality not quantity. Game length alone shouldn't overshadow how much effort, quality, and good overall gameplay has been put into a game.

Fatal Frame...... both 1 and 2 i think plays for about... 8-10 hours.... ? not sure about RE, i don't like them... i also heard Dead Space is not that long either.... hmm.. that reminds me I have to finish it...

DS is mostly 12 hours long with 12 Chapters each needing 1 hour to complete.

Great game! I'm a long time fan of the entire Silent Hill series (though, anything after 3 lost a bit of the series' luster) and Shattered Memories is just the kind of "revamp" the series needed. I feel that Climax really managed to bring back the mystery, intrigue, and terror the series lacked in the last few entries.

While I do miss some elements of combat, I think that almost a complete lack of a means to protect yourself from relentless, pursuing hordes of creatures only adds to the tension created by the town and its ominous, ghostly ambience. If you really allow yourself to become immersed in the game world, Shattered Memories can be a very haunting experience. There are moments in the game where I literally had chills and got freaked out and had to take a moment to catch my breath. A game hasn't done that to me since the first time I played the original Fatal Frame.

That being said, PLAY THIS GAME ALONE AND IN THE DARK WITH THE SOUND CRANKED!! As with any self-respecting horror title, ALOT of the immersion factor has to do with the environment around you while you're playing. This game REQUIRES that you play it in the correct atmosphere, otherwise many of the games visual and auditory elements will have an immensely dimished effect and will not garner the intended reaction from the player. The game is intended to scare you and keep you on your toes for what comes next. Make sure you set yourself up so the game can do its job proper.

I don't know, i've read a review or two where the reviewer(s) claim they are "huge" Silent Hill fans and "know everything there is to know about the series" yet they say this feels nothing like a Silent Hill game. I completely disagree with those accusations. This feels VERY much like a Silent Hill. I picked the game up yesterday and played for a solid 5-6 hours and can say this, without a doubt, IS definitely Silent Hill. Other than the obvious references (i.e. characters and set-pieces) to the original game, something about SM constantly reminds me of SH2 (my, and most everyone elses, favorite game in the series). I can't quite pinpoint what it is, theres just "something" about it that is reminiscent of the second game.

So yeah, I dig the game. I think its definitely one of the better Wii games we've seen in a while. Outside of that, Shattered Memories is a fantastic and extremely welcomed return to true survival-horror regardless of what system it may have released on. I've had no trouble what-so-ever with the controls (even when trying to shake off a clutching enemy, which I know some people have had problems with.), the visuals are some of the best we've seen on Wii (when it comes to acheiving "realism" on the system), the audio is top-notch (fantastic ambient music and sound-fx as always with an SH game) and it contains an intriguing new take on the original games story and fills it with all kinds of twists and "WTF?" moments that will no doubt have you pushing on to the end.

If you're "on the fence" about picking up a copy, i'd say just go for it. You may be as pleasantly surprised as I am with how good Shattered Memories really is!

Can't wait to get home and finish my first playthrough and start all over again with a completely different psych profile!

Oh, and the changes are actually more than merely cosmetic. I've seen videos where the first person you meet is Cybil in the diner. On my current game, the first person I met in the game was the bar tender at the "Good Ol' Days" bar across the street from the diner. The conversations in each scenario yielded the same result, but they were two completely different conversations. So depending on your psych profile, the final summation of the game will remain the same but the story, routes you take, and personalities you meet on your way to it will vary.

And that was really long winded. Kudos if you read it all! ;)

Hope it helped!
