Looks like it might not be so optional after all

I still say it's optional. All I can think of for now with regards to the use of R2 and L2 are simple re-mappings of touchscreen function to the buttons and slide pad. Beyond that I see no reason why games would make the peripheral 'compulsory' for their games.
If I may, I would go so far as to say this peripheral does nothing but allow 3DS users to keep their touchscreens smudge-proof. I think a lot of people are forgetting the power and flexibility of a touchscreen. A touchscreen is, if done effectively, the Swiss Army Knife of gaming control - it can do anything and everything that buttons and analog sticks can do. The iOS devices have proven this fact time and time again.
Edit: Taking a closer look at the pictures, I'd say the form factor of this peripheral appeals to me. It has a nicecontour to it, and seems to take after the curves of the Wiicontrollers (the bottom part).

I agree with disneyanime91, for the most part.
It's still optional, and probly will be used for remaping some controls. And plus, the assocory is no where near as expensive as I thought it would be.
if thats real design then i refuse to buy one they look so bulky and a pain to holdelbert_b_23
Well, you most certainly don't have to buy it. Though before I go agreeing/ disagreeing with it being a pain to hold, I'l give it a try first.
Also I expect there will be 3rd party designs for this add on.
Okay think of it this way... When (not if, lol) this add-on is integrated into a new 3DS design next year, and you got all those extra buttons, are developers going to use them for additional functionality or 'remaps' of touch screen stuff? Besides, what could you really remap to the new buttons? Of course not all games have to use every button, but I have a feeling many will
Sure, but there's one fundamental problem with your argument: You have no idea, just like the rest of us, whether this is an "if" or a "when." You're just making conjectures with the bold (and totally false) claim that you know something the rest of us don't. Until it's announced, there's no point in worrying about it because it very well may never exist. It hasn't even been mentioned in any official capacity. There's no reason to "think of it this way" because no one knows whether or not that will happen.Okay think of it this way... For now, I think it will be optional.
But also, I dont really see this as being a problem if devs sudenly start using it for alot of their games. So what if if its an addon? If it'll keep me from having to buy a 3DS redesign later on in the future then I see that as a good thing. I mean, as long as I can still charge my 3DS with the addon attached to the 3DS, i see no problem. I mean, as much as I like the 3DS charging platform, I just simply cant play my games comfirtably using it. So I much rather just have the charger plugged directly into my 3DS.
Remember the PS1 and how it got the dual shock nearly 4 years after it came out? It's gonna be optional. They can't possible add L2/R2 and keep it a reasonable size. Even the DSi XL isn't big enuff for double shoulder buttonsOkay think of it this way... Now that I think about it, it will probably be optional.
But now, since it has more buttons to make it more similar to the Wii U controller, I believe this addon will be used for the 3DS verson of Super Smash bros (and ofcorse to make it more Wii U controll friendly :P)

There's no 'when'.
No one knows a revision is coming anytime soon. No one knows what it'll include if it does come.
People are just speculating about speculation, no point.
I must say; I really, really like the design of the peripheral! At first I was pretty neutral about it, but now I'm quite sure I'm going to get one (or two, or three...) of these (as well as any special-edition versions that come packaged with games :P).
My only gripe, though, is that it won't fit my Nyko Power Pak+... But I kinda expected that from the start, so I'll just be getting the Power Grip when it comes out later this year for easy swapping between that and this slide pad :D
Though it would be even better if Nyko/Nintendo came up with a design for this that extends the battery life, to solve all the problems.
Interesting article about the new silde pad extension thing.

"3DS must relaunch" it's titled, and it talks about how N will be separating the market by releasing the new slide pad. I have to agree with them... Nintendo back themselves into a corner with this.
The Wii did pretty fine with one analog stick and if people wanted two they could pick up a cIassic controller. I don't see how this is any different.Interesting article about the new silde pad extension thing.

Plus, the author goes on to talk about how Wii MotionPlus was a necessary add-on ... no it wasn't. For games that wanted to use it, it was an optional available, just like the cIassic controller and just like this analog attachment. Sure, some games will probably require the attachment, but most won't.

I respectfully disagree, and stand by my stance that Nintendo has done nothing fatally wrong with the 3DS this far. Sure, they've stumbled a little with the launch titles, but I think they handled the 'price drop' issue quite well with the 3DS ambassador scheme. And this slide pad issue is, in all honesty, being blown way out of proportion.
Like I said before, a touch screen is way more powerful and flexible than any analog stick and any button layout, and a lot of people are forgetting that fact. In addition, I don't see additional shoulder buttons being added on, even in future 3DS models: They'd still be an optional add-on. They just add way to much bulk for a basic portable console sans-peripherals.
Back to the analog stick: complainers say the Vita has 2, even with a touchscreen.
I counter with this:
The Vita has 1X5-inch touchscreen, versus the 3DS's 1X3.5-inch display and 1X3-inch touchscreen. Using the primary display as a touchscreen for control can be difficult due to obscuring of the 'visual field of play'. It has a touchpad on the back, but using that as an alternative to an analog stick is tricky, with the thumbs already occupied on the front, thus the need for 2 analog sticks.
The 3DS, however, has its touchscreen separate from the primary game display screen. This thus allows for dedicated usage of the touchscreen purely for control, with an 'infinite possibilities' layout for control schemes, without the worry of obscuring the 'visual field of play'.
Granted, I shall wait for further information from Nintendo regarding the developer uptake status of this peripheral before making final judgement on how well this issue is being handled, but this is my current stance on the matter: This slide pad is a nice-to-have, but not a must-have for probably a large majority of games for the 3DS in the near future.
Just think about it guys Fit two extra shoulder buttons and another slider on the 3DS and make it portable and look good. Not likely. That's why it wasn't there in the first place. Also, I'm sure Nintendo is only adding it to please the devs that want to make console-like games on the 3DS. Stop over-reacting, since the game boxes will say "expansion pack optional" that implies this is like Motion Plus or the Cl)Assic controller. It may eventually be in a redesign, but it may not also and it will largely entirely optional.darth-pyschosis
I agree, the biggest reason this addon was created was probably to satisfy developers. Probably so that multiplats between the portables and maybe the consoles could be more similar instead of completely different from each other. I dont really know.
All I know is that I see no reason to freak out over this.

I never even thought about that, but you make a lot of sense.

That was exactly what I was thinking, this on the 3DS=Classic Controller for Wii. Is there a game that's only classic controller for Wii? NO! Even games like Brawl and Tatsunoko vs Capcom where almost everyone uses the Gamecube or Classic Controller has options for Wiimote+Nunchuk, there will always be a default 3DS option.Even games like Brawl and Tatsunoko vs Capcom where almost everyone uses the Gamecube or Classic Controller has options for Wiimote+Nunchuk, there will always be a default 3DS option.FPS1337I would direct your attention to Red Steel 2 and the Wii Motion Plus.
I hate the way it looks, I will never buy it. Aqua3D-PlayerAll I'll say is this: that crow will taste mighty fine when the first big Nintendo franchise hits that requires the add on.

You would direct us to 3 games, one not out yet, that require M+. It isn't going to a big deal, and any game that REQUIRES it will likely be a game that the consumer buying it will be the first to line up for the slide pad expansion anyway.
You think thats bad? Add a 2nd pad and two more shoulder buttons to the actual 3DS and that's even worse This is a good idea. Its optional and keeps the 3DS focused on traditional good portable games while being able to play console like games if the devs want it to. Also, it apparently is pretty comfortable to hold and it doesn't look that bad now that I've seen it 360 degrees. This has got to be one of the worst designs for any invention, ever.

You may perhaps direct folks to 3 different games. I'll only direct them to one. And Zelda is the "one not out yet" right? How many folks do you foresee buying a WM+ just to play the game? It'll be the same when Nintendo releases a 1st party heavy hitter that requires the device.

If I was Nintendo, and I wouldn't doubt they would do this is. Just throw it into the 3DS box. I mean, if its $10-$20 why not include with the $169 unit. It would make sure every consumer after that has it, and it'd be optional purchase if you didn't have it. Or just have $49.99 Bundles for the games that use it.Please Log In to post.
