SMG lives go away?

Okay so here's what is happening. I play SMG, get like 20 lives, then save and shut the game off. I turn the game back on, and I only have 5! Is this what's supposed to happen? I'm so confused, haha. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yea i had like 30 lives i turn it off come back and have 5 im just like now way did it not save, but i had all my star so im just like whatever.

Yeah, I mean I guess lives don't really matter, as you can get the so easily. It's just like a continue when you die. Whatevs.

It happens whenever your get a new star. Its a good thing though. I mean, its easy enough.

You start off with 9 lives if you talk to Mailtoad or 24 if you are on your second play through and talk to him.

I would have over 100 lives if that didn't happen, mkaes the game more challenging.

Yeah, Super Mario World did the same thing, and just about every other mario game with the save feature.
