Is the plastic going to be really cheap like the DS lite. I men that thing felt like it was going to break! Or is it going to be built like the superior, DS Phat, tank design?
I'm guessing they're sticking to as small as possible. If it was built like the Phat, they should have no reason to take out the GBA slot. The fact that it's gone leads me to believe they're making smaller than the Lite (though with a larger screen.)

It's thinner, but it's larger because it's wider and longer (DS: 133 x 73.9 vs. DSi: 137 x 74.9 mm). That's a percentage increase in size of 4.4%. So no, they're not making it smaller than the Lite. They're making it larger and thinner.
