Like on MP:hunters and Mario Kart DS where friend codes are for voice chat and more custom matches or is it going to be like Animal Crossing where you have to be one the friends code to even play with each other. I think it will be like both. Some games will have match makings and some not. Also how about thrid party games. Are they required to have the same friend code system as well. I hope not.

It's going to be more similar to Tetris DS I believe, for most games anyways (especially sports games). There will be random matchmaking for ranking points (and you'll usually be paired with those of similar rankings) or just random matching in general, and then you can play with friends.

I just saw the guide and now I must start adding a ton of random people to my empty address book

I originally thought it was going to be based off of Battle.net's random match making system, where you play opponents within 6 levels of your current gameplay skill.

I'm pretty sure they will keep the  "play with anyone" feature. But if you want to host a game and set the rules you'll need to have friends codes. I agree that Friends codes is a bad idea, since its a lot easier to host a game and be able to invite anyone to play rather than trying to set times and coordinate all your buddies for a match.
