So how powerful is the 3DS? Pretty damn powerful, apparently.

Capcom has Resident Evil 5 running on the 3DS. No specifics about performance or anything like that, but Street Fighter 4 producer Yoshinori Ono was very impressed with the results.

Just another reason why I'm glad I got this thing pre-ordered.

Thanks for sharing that. I bet the guys over in SW will have a thing or two to say about it in regards to another up-and-coming handheld.

as far as i know the 2 RE games coming to the 3DS are running on the RE5 engine. there also able to use quite a few assets from RE5 also....they just need to scale it back a bit. capcom mentioned that porting the RE5 engine over while still keeping many of its nice effects didnt take too much time or effort. from a devs point of view the support for openGL2 (through the maestro library....the GPU itself is a 1.1 part) is probably making them very happy. a lot of the shader code written for PC, 360 and PS3 can be ported over to the 3DS which makes life a lot easier for them. it doesnt mean we will be seeing visuals up to the PCs finest of course but it can still share a lot of the underlying tech with other platforms. so a dev can make a PC game and then scale it back to the 3DS without doing major surgery to the engine or if they make a 3DS game they could move it to another platform without needing a major rewrite of the underlying tech. as long as the dev knows there making a multiplat it should be ok. it does beg the question as to why epic have decided not to bother adding 3DS support to UE3 though. they did mention something about 3DS not being up to standard but surely getting the iphone version of the engine running on the 3DS would be doable. it would be a nice extra selling point for UE3 also. if capcom can get the RE5 engine up and running on the 3DS without too much hassle then why not UE3?

MT Framework is probably the best engine this gen. If Capcom was able to bring the engine specifically for the Wii, it would have the same or better result.

Wonder if they'd actually bring all of RE5 to the 3DS. Would so be a day 1 buy from me. Love me some RE5.

thats honestly pretty impressive. it also begs the question why resident evil 5 never made it to the wii. maybe the 3ds > wii in terms of power? ya i am curious how well it ran but it seems to run well enough. im rather shocked it can take that much thrown at it. oh well i guess its not entirely shocking when you think about it nintendo has basically been using the same SDK for like 10 years now if not longer and just adding to and refining it. so developers should be pretty familar with it long ago.

After a bit of research, it seems to me that the 3DS is on the level of upper-tier Dreamcast games when it comes to it's ability to render polygons. However, it can render visual effects such as shaders or bump-mapping on a level that approaches the 360. This explains why Resident Evil Revelations has advanced dynamic lighting, yet the Beretta 92F model in-game looks straight out of 2001.

Visual tricks, I'd imagine. The 3DS is capable of shading techniques that Gamecube/Wii era hardware can only dream of. So the 3DS benefits from some lighting tricks and the ability to bump polygon counts way down (courtesy of the low resolution screen) and the end result is something that looks almost like the 360/PS3 version of the game unless you analyze it closely. The early shots I've seen look pretty good for a handheld game, but the models and textures are fairly low quality - it just works because of the screen size.

They got Unreal Engine 3 running on the iPhone, although it's specs are bellow what UE3 requires on the PC. The low resolution helps too.

Played it, street fighter 4, kid icarus and pilotwings were all great. resident evil not so hot. Main reason can't do a full resident evil 5, is cart capacity (1.5 gig can't fit everything quite on it) this will also be the main limiting factor for the NGP which is why visuals for that system are ramped up PS2 rather than the full ps3.Still both systems impress in the looks department. The 3D on the DS is different enough to draw in casual players and hardcore alike.

The 3DS is capable of supporting high capacity cartridges, but I image they're prohibitively expensive at the moment and hence the relatively small 1.5 gig limit (which is still pretty substantial). As prices go down, cart capacity will go up, and we'll start seeing more sophisticated 3DS games in the future.

Developers are saying that in some ways the 3DS is more powerful than the Wii, particularly its ability to handle textures and advanced lighting effects.

I said that, allegedly, it is Dreamcast-like when it comes to RENDERING POLYGONS, though, yes, it can handle a lot of snazzy effects that are way outside the PSP's, Wii's and the Gamecube's range.

3DS supports high capacity cartridges, but they're currently limited to 1.5GB, probably because of cost. As prices come down, we'll start seeing higher capacity cartridges.

considering they said that the Wii couldn't run Resident Evil 5 that's quite impressive, but it's not too surprising considering how close the mercenaries and revelations look. If the 3DS can run a game like Resident Evil 5 well, that would be almost on par with what the NGP has shown us, and plus the 3D.

I'm sure it will look just as good as the console counterparts considering you're playing it on a smaller screen.

In some ways, yes; in other ways, no. I think the Wii can probably push more polygons than the 3DS, but the 3DS has more advanced lighting and texturing effects.

Can't we just say 2GB? No one makes 1 GB and 512MB Flash memory chips, infact I'm not sure anyone manufacture's 512MB Flash Memory cards at all. Its 2GB at launch. But will go up to 8GB

I'm sure Mercs 3D will use 2GB, it comes out in July, but i'm betting MGS3 and Revelations step it up to 4GB and 8GB

While I think this is basically meaningless crap as the framerate was probably awful and the res and such, I do think they have achieved a rather pretty game with Mercenaries.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RKFhMFrv_w

I am blown away at what Capcom achieved here. I honestly am a bit confused as to how they seem to be outdoing Nintendo.

Umm okay I guess getting resident evil 5playable on the 3ds is utter crap and would just have terrible framerates, since it is really similar to the mercenaries 3d with some better effects, and I guess the resolution is horrible because its the same resolution every 3ds game is played at, and I guess capcom would be impressed by utter crap. I'm pretty sure they could get the Resident Evil 5 on the 3ds looking pretty damn good, considering how close resident evil mercenaries 3d and revelations to RE5 and they're launch window games.

Further testament of the power of the 3DS:

"What I saw consisted of a tech demo where the developers ported the Conduit 2 engine and assets over from Wii to 3DS. Several environments were available, and they looked very nearly like their Conduit 2 counterparts . . . Already, everything was running smoothly and with great detail, and with good 3D depth."

its 2 gigabite for ds cards ,not 1.5 lol

but ya it still wouldnt fit re5 unless you had to swap cards lol much like cds but then again i dont know how much space my 360 version uses probably 5 to 6 gigs with hd graphics,

scale down graphics take a few enemies off screen and im pretty sure itll be able to run on 3ds but youll have to have 2 cards at least per game ,

like they did for ps1 and gc
