Sin & Punishment goes down from a 10 rating to an 8.5 because it has a subpar two player mode? What kind of manure is that?

Reviews don't just start at 10 and tick stuff off, that's been said by several reviewers on this site in the past

Okay, so a two player mode on a game is automatically 8.5? I've just noticed most reviews of Wii games... if the games are actually exceptional and are very good, they get an 8.5. That seems to be a set number for the top Wii games, for the most part. Obvious exceptions like SMG, SMG2, zelda, etc aside.

Umm no, the content of the game itself warrants an 8.5, as I said, they don't just tick off points starting at 10, its a measure of the game as a whole. The game is AA on metacritic and GS's score is only .2 off of the average, so it's not like they individually are conspiring against the game  Sorry a game you like didn't score as well as you wanted it to, who cares, play it and enjoy it, 8.5 is a great score

It is a great score. But if you read the review, the only thing under "THE BAD" is an underwhelming two-player mode. Roll your eyes all you want, it seems like an unjust scale considering there are arguably worse games with better reviews... that have multiple things under "THE BAD".

And as I said, they don't just start off at 10 and tick stuff off for what it did bad. It's as much about what it did good as what it did bad, and the good obviously didn't warrant a AAA score

Just because that was the only thing they said was "bad" doesn't mean that the good stuff was perfect. The whole game can be good and it can score a 8.0. Good isn't perfect.

i think he's just basing it off of the written review where they show the good and the bad in 2 separate sections at the top of the review...

that said i agree most of wii games scores are deducted cause of lackof hd or onlinepaly /multiplayer

even prevallent last gen with gamecube version of timesplitters future perfect!and we know we cant play these online any more on the other consoles so why should the score on gc version be 7.9 and the othersbe a 8.5 now

Put it this way: you can make a game with evertything correct in it, but it's not fun enough or long enough.

There is more to the game than just the pros and cons list. Even if you ignore the "bad" list, it would probably only score a 9 still. The content is good to a certain degree. The score should be used to gauge the strength of what the reviewer is saying.

I'm not saying it's the only thing wrong with the game, gamespot is. Maybe I missed something in the review but it didn't nothing but praise the game up until the last paragraph where half of it mentioned how two player was underwhelming. *shrug* I would probably give the game a 9.0 due to the replay value and some of the boss fights are really nifty.

@trugs26

Agreed.

This poster probably has a point though. I don't remember the last time I saw a really good Wii game get a 9 since Call of Duty: Black Ops and that's a multi-plat. 8.5 is a very good score, but it really does seem like a lot of games get that rating and no higher. I think that's the point the topic creator is making. I can't judge the game. Never played it. But I have noticed the "max limit" of 8.5 for a good game on the Wii platform.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 counters that statement :P And seeing as the GS score for Wii games has been very close to the metacritic average, its not a conspiracy.

I'm not saying it's a conspiracy. God, man. lmao. I was just stating a lot of great Wii games garner the 8.5 rating. And I already mentioned earlier about SMG, SMG 2, zelda, etc being exceptions.

lol the conspiracy thing is kinda a joke from last year, when a lot of Wii games were getting 8.5'd :P You'll notice the offtopic lounge is the 8.5 version :P

As has already been said, the fact that a game only has one thing in it that's truly bad doesn't mean that it would be perfect without it.

A 10 is a perfect meaning they could change anything else to improve on it AT THE TIME IT WAS MADE. Here is the description for an 8-8.5 score: '8.0-8.5: Great This range refers to great games that are excellent in almost every way and whose few setbacks probably aren't too important. We highly recommend games in the upper half of this range, since they tend to be good enough to provide an enjoyable experience to fans of the particular genre and to new players alike.' Here is the 9-9.5 Description: '9.0-9.5: Superb We absolutely recommend any game in this range, especially to fans of that particular genre. However, games that score in the 9 range are also typically well suited to new players. Games that earn 9s are naturally uncommon, and earn GameSpot's Editors' Choice Award for their outstanding quality.' I don't see the problem.

That'll never happen. This is the reason I Looooveeedddd the show on G4 called Judgement Day with Victor Lucas and Tommy Tallarico. They BOTH gave reviews on a Single game with alot of times, they disagreed but the reasoning for their disagreement was justified by actual reasoning by at least one of the hosts. This way it at least cut out alot of the bias that was in their reviews.

If you actually read the review instead of look at the bullets at the top you will see his opinion detailed and score justified.

Graphics and online functionality aren't special things anymore, they're mainstream and when games don't have those features they deserve to be docked points

Well yes, it is definitely pretty important for a video game to have graphics. :P
