And I have to say..... I expect 3 things that will happen upon release

1. Women will buy it because of the Pink writing

2. It will be horrible

3. it will bomb much like Wii Music

Upon reading the back and looking at the pictures... the game just looks awful. I'm still surprised that they're even releasing this

Although.... interestingly, we also received a floor display for the games release that includes spots for Mario Kart, Wii Play, Resort, NSMBW. The part that I find interesting is the fact of a picture on the one side looks exactly like the box art for the Japanese Mario collection everyone's been talking about (basically mario allstars). Underneathe the picture, it says celebrating 25 years of Mario.

I would lay money on the US not getting the Japanese game collection on disc. Not only because we haven't heard anything about it thus far, and the mention of the 25 years on the display... but just underneathe that.... are pictures of the 1st 3 mario games and their Wii points cost on the Virtual Console. Again, I doubt that we're getting it.

Just figured I'd share

There have been a ton of positive hands-on impressions, though.... I'll trust those a bit more than someone who just looked at the pictures on the back of the box.

But in fairness to you, I also thought this game looked atrocious based on the initial pics and info we got. But since then, we've gotten to see a lot more of the game and it looks like a blast for.. you know.. parties.

The old back of the box decision, what is this 1988? Al Gore created the internet so you wouldn't have to do that.

1) So, if there is pink on a product, it only targets women. Yet looks can be deceiving...

2) I doubt it will be horrible considering Shigeru Miyamoto is involved in the project (I think...), his works hardly ever get panned.

3) Wii Music is hardly a bad game at all, as it's no Superman 64, Big Rigs, or even E.T. It currently has 64.07% rating average on GameRankings, so it's marginally good in some way...

I'm pretty sure Edge or GamesTM reviewed this recently and gave it 5/10. I expect it to get those sorts of scores all round to be honest. Maybe a couple or 7's or 8's, but little more. It basically is Mario Party 9, with rebranding, and 8 wasn't too great.

My store also got Wii Party in today- we usually get things about a week in advance- and the only thing i can judge from the back of the box is that it looks like Mario Party but with Miis.

That should be pretty obvious since there's no more Mario Party :P

Fairness to all of you, I agree... I based all of this from just looking at the box. But, just because it uses Miis doesn't mean a thing. We all know what happened to Wii Music.

Yes, I'm also basing that the target market is children and women. What adult male is going to feel great about going to the store and asking "hey, do you have that hot new game Wii Party?" and feel great about checking out with an attractive young female working register? Or even telling his friends, "hey bro, rally up all the guys and come on over to play some Wii Party!" I will be willing to bet good money on that the majority of consumers who do purchase this will be women (either for their children, or themselves). There's nothing wrong with that, but again, I feel that its what they're trying to do with this particular piece of software.

And yes, colors do attract a certain consumer base. Why else would their be pink ipods, purple laptops, or boy/girl toys offered in kids meals?

maybe my prediction was a little premature indeed, butI still feel its going to bomb. If I'm wrong, hey... I was wrong lol

Not every guy is in their late teens or early 20s, and not every guy that age hangs out exclusively with other guys his age. Everyone outside of that tiny demographic you described could easily find themselves in a situation where Wii Party would be exactly the type of game they want.

I wish Wii Party had been out when I was in college.... Wii Sports was awesome, and WarioWare was okay once (though people had a really hard time understanding that game), but it would've been nice to have something with the kind of in-room interaction like Wii Party.

So THAT'S the secret to attracting a female audience. In retrospect it seems really obvious.

Again, I agree. Not every guy is in the age bracket you/myself described. How old are you out of curiosity? You on one hand might not worry about the title being displayed in Pink which is completely fine. But like I mentioned above, would you buy a pink ipod or a purple laptop? Would your father buy a pink pair tennis shoes? Would Ike Turner drive a pink Cadillac?

Just because everyone that isn't in that teenage bracket doesn't mean they still wouldn't be put off buy a color. I'm not talking about us gamers on here. Some of us obviously research and do hw on games because we know how to do so and we've learned our lesson. Again, as someone mentioned above "what is this, 1988?". Well... that view on products still hasn't changed over the year. Movie posters attract people the same way game art does along with what it says on the box. Does the Conduit ring a bell? I seem to remember people being put off by its boxart, which is part of the game's box (obviously). Look at all the games we consider shovelware (not all, but some did sell). A mom probably looked at the box and saw cute characters and read a description that convinced her to make a purchase for her child.

I think you're putting too much stock in the color. And looking at it from the clueless window shopper perspective, the box also has Miis on it, and the name is very similar to that amazing Wii Sports that we used to play so much, and oh, look at the back, it has blah blah blah (I don't know what's on the back).

Like Wii Fit and the Wii itself, Nintendo will have to get the word out about this game, AND it actually has to be a great product so that word-of-mouth can make sales really take off.

So I say all of this mainly as a counterargument to what you're saying, because there's always good arguments on both sides for how well games like this will end up selling. I think it has a lot of potential, but that really boils down to how much really fun content is actually in the game.

The image of the game for the masses will be more shaped by popular hands-on experience rather than just the boxart. It needs to have the effect that Guitar Hero (originally) and the Wii both had on people (on a smaller scale, of course), which was that someone played it at someone else's house and thought that it was so much fun that they had to own it themselves.
