So, no talk about the Zelda patent?

This topic is locked from further discussion.

I may have missed something, since it's a few days old, but how come I do not find any topic about the patent (registered under the name of Miyamoto) that was made public the 8th?

This stuff right here.

You'll find reports all over the internet saying stuff like "ZOMG Nintendo going even more casual in the next Zelda, shame on them bubububuh" so if it's the first time you're hearing about this, let me prevent you from being infected by the "let's bash Nintendo and their approach" complex: it's about a hint system in which you can let the game play itself, being able to stop it at any point, if there is pre-programmed stuff for the part of the game you're stuck at. Like a built-in walkthrough.

Pretty ingenious, and I hope it was made so the next Zelda doesn't need to be dumbed down, since impatient and unexperienced Zelda gamers have this super duper hint system at hand.

It was already posted I think.

Its a good idea, but people are freaking out because they don't understand what it is. Honestly, its not like something that will be forced upon you in the game, so I don't get why "hardcore" gamers are freaking out about it.

How do we know that this patent will be associated with the Legend of Zelda? Is it because of a figure of a character with a sword and a shield? In fact, no where in the patent language ever mentions the Legend of Zelda.

By the way, a surprise that Shigeru Miyamoto's name appears on the patent. This would make him an inventor, but since he is an employee, the patent would be owned by Nintendo.

malkiko

And because a screen featuring "The Legend of 00" was also there. And because Nintendo is worried about people who get frustrated playing harder games. And also because Miyamoto said Zelda needs "big, new ideas". And the fact it's taking so long for Zelda to be shown, too.

No need to be a nay sayer here. Zelda would only benefit from that, and Nintendo sure knows that.

It doesn't seem like a huge deal. It does save me a trip to GameFAQs when I'm stuck though.

It is a huge deal, because casual gamers do not know about GameFAQs, and the only choice Nintendo had for them was dumbing their games down. People have been claiming a harder Zelda, and it seems Miyamoto and Zelda team (who incidentally affirmed not so long ago hardcore games will always be his specialty) give it a thought.

What I meant was that it isn't a big deal for me, because there are so many places I can go when I'm stuck. But I think its a great way to make Zelda more accessible and still appeal to the so-called "hardcore" audience. It seems Miyamoto found a way to please everyone.

It's come up before. For the record, there's no evidence that this will be an exclusively Zelda thing, or that we will even see it at all; those pictures are merely used to illustrate the concept.

Well, that you don't care about it is the point of that system - it will allow the devs to add things you do care about.

I remember that thread now, but I had no idea it was about the same patent, given the total mess this topic was. :P

Also, I'm aware it's just an illustration (and that there would be no point in using it only for Zelda, watch it become standard in adventure games). But the secrecy about the next Zelda and Nintendo's worries about casual gamers getting frustrated do make me feel like the next Zelda will feature it. It's just a win of a concept, helping the gamer while letting the game keep its flow.

As a side note, it reminds me of Prince of Persia and the "no dying" system. Devs are more and more willing to let the casuals taste the more hardcore games.

I can't seem to find the picture in the Link but Nintendo does tend to patent things here and there and never use it. Scene selection could possibly mean that they're taking a more cinematic route, but I'm still confused at what the "Digest" option means.

I think that this is a great idea! I want the next zelda to challenge me.

I will never use the "hint" button. I would rather be stuck on a puzzle for 3 days then cheat

Yeah, as you said hopefully they will be able to make the game more challenging. Perhaps they could use this to make bosses easier as well, thier could be an easy and a more difficult way to kill a boss and the easy way would be described with the 'hint' function.

I think this patent is great I would like Nintendo to implement it in all of their "Hardcore" games because it will be challenging and then "Casuals" can can play these games without being aliantated and they can actually complete it. Then once they beat it once they can beat it again without using the hints then when they get another game they might feel confident in playing it that they wouldn't need the hints and then they become a "Hardcore" gamer.

It seems like a take on hint systems that you see in games like Bioshock or Tomb Raider: Underworld just taken up a notch. But lets not forget that patents come out of the gaming world all the time and alot of time nothing happens.

I think you overestimate nintendo.... I think nintedno just thinks casual gamers are just very slow/lazy. I hope this get implemented in more things...so i can just watch the game being played like a movie or show.....it would sure help to get caught up in games series that your just starting

The idea in general lends itself to Nintendo's bridge gamer asthetic. Though I'm not sure what the fuss is about. I've been playing Zelda games for 15 some odd years (not sure if you can count the 6 years I spent watching my dad play them and sucking at Contra) and I always end up having trouble in Water temples, Twilight Princess included. If it means boss fights can be toned up, then I'm all for that. The hint system is a nice concept, its merits have already been discussed in this thread, but I like the fact that its not a negative towards the "hardcore", but more of a weening device for those yet to cut their teeth on more challenging tasks.

I made the other thread, but when making it couldn't be bothered to explain it or anything, so it was a fail. But it does sound interesting. It's the perfect way to keep hardcore and casuals happy. A bridging title thats both hardcore and casual.

Oh god no the only hint system I want in my Zelda games is the Fairy or Imp nagging at me. And no I do not like my adventure games to play themselves. Keep Zelda the way it is. I would however like to see more Complax bosses though like they start understanding your attack patterns and counter iwth a new set of attacks and several different weak points that need to be shown by having the boss do something like falling off something or getting stunned or some whatever nonsense like that.

The idea here is that its OPTIONAL, meaning that if you don't want it you don't have to use it. This allows for more fiendish designs without alienating those who aren't ready for it. The only thing to actually worry about with this is if the design fails to ramp up along with the hints given. IE if the design remains relatively easy along with the hint system. Though, honestly that's doubtful. Most devs would love to have more fun designing things.

I think it's a good idea. Like all have mentioned before, it's the best of both worlds.

It just makes me wonder of how it will applied to the game. The main story only? or will it be applied to it's entirety? (sidequests as an example), interesting indeed.

I'm still can't wait to see what this game will control like. Wii Sports Resort can't get here soon enough.

This system will just further integrate two aspects of gaming that have always went together, but never realized in the same product. The only difference between this and GameFAQs is that certain gamers have a stigma about using a computer while playing video games. Most of them cite the same fears of ruining their fun or feeling like they are blatantly cheating when getting help.

Because overall ignorance tells those gamers that a console is not a computer (it is), integrating the system will stave their fear and help usher in another innovation that can only be done on Wii, watching how other people beat something.

I just feel really really sorry at the hired hands Nintendo will have to use to filter out the content. I for one would rather just hire a professional actor than see this be user-created.

I simply shudder to think if Nintendo allows people to shoot themselves with a camera...I would never use the feature.

I think the most interesting thing is how you get to know the way to solve the puzzle. You keep watching Link, wondering "what is he gonna do?!". That will certainly feel unique!

Yes, but saying "the game plays itself" triggers the casual paranoia.
