I like it, it's fun to torment my sister in multiplayer.
The weakest entry of the Mario 2D platformers
It's really a hard sell to get the game
I mean you could spend around 40 and grab the New Super Mario or you could get Mario 1, Mario Lost Levels, Mario 3, Super Mario World and throw in Mario 2 for good measure all for 31.

It's awesome, tons of fun, probably the best entry in the Mario 2D platformers.

I honestly don't know how anyone could say that if they've played the previous titles
Everything from the level design to the graphics for the era in the earlier games are so far above the newest version
Right now, I'm right before the main castle in world 4 (quick save) in single-player, and just beat the sub-castle in world 3 in multi-player. I haven't checked out the other 2 multi-player modes (the free-for-all or coin battles), but so far I'd say it's great. It may not do anything drastically different in terms of level design and stuff like that, but they did a great job of introducing the multiplayer the best that they can, so that it's still great in single-player, and a fun, albeit a bit frustrating in multi-player. And the multi-player game manages to make the regular levels feel fresh, because you have to work with the other person in order to get through levels. Some of the challenges were easier in single-player, like getting through a group of Thwomps (where I could just run as fast as I can in single player, it takes much more precision and patience to get through them as a team. On the other hand, some things are a lot easier in multi-player, like the ghost houses, where you can have it so that you look in different directions to stop the Boos from coming after you. I have only played the multi-player in 2-player mode, but it was already pretty challenging getting through it with 2 players. I couldn't really imagine it with 4 players, that must be really crazy...

I'm talking facts
The technical proficiency of the graphics in the earlier Mario games are better then what the Wii has with New Mario Bros, fact
The level design is much better on 3 and SMW then on New Super Mario Bros, fact
The average difficulty on Lost Levels beats the most difficult parts on New Super Mario Bros, fact
I haven't played the new one yet (makes it sound pointless for me commenting) but I know I played a lot out of super mario bros on my wii, I still play it. I don't think I'll play new super mario bros as much as I played the first just because I will play super mario bros knowing that I only payed five bucks for something that is a ton of fun and was an amazing game for it's era. I'll play the new one and think "I paid $50 for a game with a couple new mechanics and four player co-op that I'll never play because I'm the only one out of all my friends who likes mario. Plus it has recycled sounds, why did I spend my money on this when I could have bought a wii points card and gotten super mario bros 3 or something else that I'll spend hours on..." and it will keep going like that. If a game is fun it doesn't make it a great title, I loved mad world even though if you break it down (sounds, voice acting, story) it wasn't that great of a game yet I've played it over twenty hours in the first month I had it. New super mario bros isn't that amazing of a game, even if it is fun therefore the others have been better. I know not playing co-op is because I don't have friends that are into mario but even if I did have friends that liked mario games, I still would be paying $50 for a game that I would only enjoy in co-op (I don't even know if co-op is really fun)
havent had time to play it much yet, (so many good games atm)
but I did play a little with my sister and her boyfriend and it was a blast

Without nostalgia goggles, New Super Mario Bros. Wii has the best design out of all the 2D Marios.
Terrible, anybody who buys a DS game for $50 because it now has "split screen" (not even online!) is a complete tool. Nintendo should have scrapped this idea alltogether and have gotten the next Zelda out faster!

You are right, it's not a DS game, it's a port of a DS game. My bad.
And my friend who owns it refers to all offline play as "split screen" (like Brawl). Same thing.

Yeah, it is. Did you even play it? Adding a few new items doesn't make it a new game.

But having 77 brand new levels does make it a new game.

Being made ofcompletly new levels does though.
Infact I'd say "new level design" is the most important ingredient in making a new game.
Same levels with reskins. Like the grass levels in the DS version were made into snow levels, same layout. My friend beat the entire game already, he said something like 20 of the levels are new, the rest reskins.

uh, dude, you kinda just failed....you just said the graphics for the nes and snes are better when its obvious the graphics are better in mario bros. wii. Even technically the graphics are better.Actually it was just "meh" for me, just played to the first boss in world 2. I gave it a second chance and played with my gf, bro and a friend, all of them got bored just after the same boss ... Guess most that love it, love it for the nostalgia reference. I was always a Sonic Gamer and never really played the 2D Mario titles, guess that's why I don't overrate it :S
BEST CO-OP GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FPS1337
*does not agree* Actually I hate how the co-op is implemented, there were so many times we came in each others way, it got annoying. Yeah you can take it easy, but when one looses his lifes just because the game almost wants you to screw each other and the person who lost his lifes is doomed till the end of the level, this decreases the fun of the co-op part extremly oO
BEST CO-OP GAME EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FPS1337Based on the caps lock and exclamation points, I kind of wish I didn't agree.
I rate it the 4th best Mario sidescroller behind Mario Bros 3,World and the original Super Mario Bros. A good game but not the best 2D Mario.

Source?(And yes, I'm being sarcastic)
I like it, its between good and ok for me...I was expecting it to be much bigger. Like the first time I play SM3 on the NES ..it felt HUGE!!!!...the world I mean..but this time round there was nothing that made go wow..or didn't feel the same experience as SM3

You make me laugh. I just hope you realized a while ago that you were wrong and are just too proud to admit it.I think I would change my mind and say its on par with Super Mario Bros but the brilliant power ups in Super Mario Bros 3 and the excellent level design in World make them far superior games.
gonna have to agree with Jaysonguy.. massive massive dissapointment for me. i wasnt expecting it to top mario 3 or world, but to atleast bring me some enjoyment. i took the game back and got my money back. The weakest entry of the Mario 2D platformers

what do people expect this game to be? A masterpiece?
It was purposely brought out to be nothing but a filler product for the holiday season. Mario was used because it would help move the title.
I'm glad I told the guy at GS "no" when he kept on trying to push it on me, and to pre-order it. "No thanks I say," "I'll gladly take Silent Hill or Crystal Bearers over this."
It's a shame too... because those quality titles won't sell nearly what this "filler" title will.

Well, I was disappointed with SPM so maybe I'm not the best person to answer this, but I will anyway. It's much better. Much better. I can see myself playing though this multiple times and coming back to play it again years latter. Two generations from now, people will be complaining that this game hasn't made it to the equivalent of the virtual console of the future yet.How does this game compare to Super Paper Mario?

better platforming, better level design, less walls of text. Over all I'd say it's better in every way except story. How does this game compare to Super Paper Mario?

The thing wasn't even on my radar until I saw the GiantBomb quick look. I guess people could be dissapointed if they only have the oppurtunity to play the single player mode. On its own it is rightfully compared to the incredible history of Mario sidescrollers, and while it doesn't best the creativity of 3, the scope of 4, or the reintroduction of NSMB, its a well crafted game that I can honestly see myself spending more time with than the others. World has far and a way been my favorite due to its length, Yoshi, and all the fun ideas it brought to the series. But thats changed with this one and its multiplayer. I honestly can't say I've had this much fun in a co-op game ever before. The sheer insanity means I'm not making it very far with each session, but its constantly filled with yelling and high fives and a sense of achievement every time at least one of us pulls through a challenging level.
I've gone through the first two worlds on 8 different save files on 4 different Wiis (The farthest I've made it to so far is world 6). I have yet to get tired of the opening levels and I've honestly found something new each time.
