Because the Wii U is using a new architecture that is different from that of the Wii, hardware backwards compatibility will not be possible without including Wii hardware in the Wii U alongside the actual Wii U hardware. But because this move would increase costs, Nintendo would prefer to avoid this move. Do you think Nintendo will have to take the Xbox 360 route for backwards compatibility (software emulation)? It has already been comfirmed. The Wii U is 100% BC with all Wii games, Virtural console, and Wiiware games, as well as with all Wii accessories, including the Wiimotion plus and Wii Balance board.

Nintendo must have the cost of the Chip for backwards compatibilities down by now. Since they use a custom DVD Rom. So using a Custom Blu-Ray Disc. Nintendo is using the same chip maker IBM. So I suppose they will get a deal on the old chips. I do hope that Nintendo keeps the Virtual console for the Wii U.

Yeah they haven't confirmed it's backwards compatible with anything but Wii retail games. Although they'd be crazy not to have backwards compatibility for Wiiware and VC games and I think there's little chance they won't. Also I'm sure the Wii U will play Wii games through hardware. They already said it's 100% compatible with Wii games and that it won't offer any enhancements. That doesn't sound like emulation which wouldn't be 100% so easily and should easily offer improvements.

@Derek My point is all the VC and wiiware games already stored on the Wii, and the saved data of these games and online-enabled Wii retail games. None of that can be saved to an SD card, so I don't know how we are going to transfer that to the Wii U. To put an example, you can transfer DSiware games from DSi to 3DS, but you will lose all the saved data in the process, which is the reason why I didn't transfer a thing from my DSi to my 3DS, and it's the reason why I doubt I will buy a Wii U.

I think that Nintendo wiiU have to take the xbox 360 route fot backward compatiblity and software emulation. Although it would increase th cost but it make Nintedo WiiU gaming console more impressive and useful.

software..they need to keep the costs down. it shouldnt be as difficult as MS with xbox1 games on the 360 though. on the 360 they couldnt tinker with the low level xbox 1 systems (specifically nvidias drivers) which was the real hell for MS getting xbox 1 games running on the 360. ninty wont have the same problem as they own all the hardware and all those low level systems like GPU drivers. the power gap between the wii and wiiu is massive so getting 100% of wii games running on the wiiu with software should be perfectly doable. its not like they have to reverse engineer a black box and guess how something works on the wii...they know exactly how everything works. i just hope they also give the option to upgrade wii games on the emulator. add things like AA and playing at 1080P. it is doable..it has been done so ninty should also be able to get it done. if they do decide to have GC games up on the estore also then hopefully those games can also get the same improvements.

They've already said all Wii games will run on Wii U, they couldn't guarantee that with software emulation right?

why not? dont take MSs experience of it as an example or existing emulators. current emulators essentially try to reverse engineer a black box. the developers are guessing how the console works. MS had problems with nvidia causing the BC hell on the 360. ninty know exactly how the wii works and most of the software and all of the hardware in the wii belongs to nintendo. the wii emulator has a pretty solid track record...and thats with guessing and trial and error. ninty themselves can do a lot better. the wii and wiiiu also have a lot more in common than the xbox and the 360. both the wii and wiiu will use a very similar (possibly the same) instruction set on the CPU and the graphics chip for both was designed by AMD (ATI at the time of the wii..same thing now). the xbox 1 used an intel pentium 3 which is X86 and its GPU was from nvidia. it couldnt be more different to the 360 if it tried. PCs of course are also x86 and, going by vids i have seen, it can do a pretty solid job. so that will also make a software BC solution easier to develop.

Well, they're using AMD for the GPU and IBM PPC for the CPU, so it could be possible that they won't need emulation. Hard to say at this point.

I stand corrected.

Unless they change something, it has been confirmed as some others have said. I love that it is too :). I have full faith in the durability (maybe some launch issues) and backward compatibility quality of Nintendo consoles. I just want to see the games and make sure they feed my need :P.
