Well, with the upcoming Sonic and the Dark Brotherhood and The Dark Knight for the Wii, we can't make an accurate judgement yet. We know in the past that the Sonic games were falling through. Examples are Sonic Heroes, Sonic the Hedgehog (Xbox 360), and many more. Some good ones were Sonic Rush, but many people are asking if Sonic REALLY is falling through. Here are some questions to keep in mind:

-From the limited source from The Dark Brotherhood and The Dark Knight, will this bring Sonic back at his game?
-What about Sonic and his appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl? Did that have any effect to Sega's unsuccess?
-Did the graphics change at all in the past games?

This is just an assumption and shouldn't take this truthfully. We can't make judgements, but I want to know what people think.

Changed Topic from "Sega" to "Sonic." Worded this wrong and meant to say Sonic. Sorry for the mix-up.

I don't think it's Sega that's falling through. It's just Sonic.

I'm interested to see what BioWare will do with the franchise. I have such a funny picture in my head of Sonic abiding strictly by D&D 3rd edition rules.

heehee, I'm always causing a fuss. :P

So ya, I think the Brotherhood may breathe new life into the hypoxic-blue corpse that is Sonic. ^____^

If the running-around-fast is getting old, throw a new format in and see where it gets you. It has already impressed people at E3. On the other hand, maybe just one more failure will be enough to convince them to let it go and make another franchise.

While I follow Sonic games with some interest, I never expect anything remotely good. I owned Sonic Rush for a while, and it's definately the best Sonic game since Sonic 1 & 2 on the Mega Drive, but the levels were more trial and error based rather than skill based. Bosses were terrible and unimaginative. If Sonic Team can't even get 2D sonic right anymore then there is little hope for the series generally. Dark Brotherhood could be good in it's own right, especially with the change in developer, but it's just not a sonic game as such. Rather it's just a game with Sonic in.

A series with so many screw-ups can never "fall through"

That's an interesting point. I wonder, what defines a game franchise? Is it the character? The developer? The genre it's in? The camera angle and game mechanics? Or is it something more ineffable, like the tone or atmosphere?

I'm just wondering, because is FFCC: MLaaK not really a FF game? Is Four Swords Adventures not really a Zelda game? Or what about Link's Awakening? I could give more examples, but I think people understand what I'm getting at.

These days I think it's the character that is the franchise. I mean Mario is the franchise as such. He's the one that sells Galaxy, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, Mario Kart Wii etc... But if you take Mario from those 3 games they have nothing in common. None of those games need Mario to benefit gameplay or quality, but slapping his face into the game definately helps sell it. I think that may be where Sega went wrong for Sonic. Perhaps the 2D Sonic concept was too specifc to expand upon.

The character can't sell anything other than it's 'speed', and thats too specific a characteristic that can differ too greatly from a more human like figure. Wheras Mario being a more basic character can be applied to multiple genres without looking out of place. Although he's a plumber, he never does any plumbing. In fact he does everything but. All Sonic can really do is run fast, and you can't apply that to many games. Kind of explains why Sonic is failing to make any kind of impact anymore.

Sonic Heroes wasn't a bad game... It was my first ps2 game, and it was a good attempt.

I think that they are beginning to see that Sonic can only be in certain kinds of games, preferably the Sega Genesis-esque games.
