It's not about how big your roster is, its how you use it

SmashBrosArt.jpg

(Above is released artwork for the game)

Sakurai had an interview with Nintendo Power about the new SSB he's working on, and this is what he had to say:

"It isn?t a matter of ?if the next game has 50 characters, that?ll be enough.? There is a certain charm to games that have huge casts of playable characters, but they tend to have issues with game balance and it becomes very difficult to fine-tune each character and have them all feel distinctive?. In terms of quantity, we?ve probably already reached the limit of what?s feasible.I think a change of direction may be what?s needed."

Looks like the next Super Smash Bros. could be getting a change in direction from what the series has seen so far!

He's right. You can only make the same game + new characters so many times before it gets stale.

Just gonna quote what I said in your 3DS thread of this and post it here too.
Hmm, I don't like the sound of this. I enjoy the gameplay of 64, Melee and Brawl and TBH, all I really want is for them to "fix" the problems and add more characters, if there ends up be less I might not even bother with the next game, because the rosters in the past 3 games have always annoyed me for missing out characters I really want to see. Also, I hope this isn't the case, but in some ways it sounds like there making excuses to leave out characters so they can add them in later as DLC when the fans get upset about them not been included.spike6958

The problem with the character angle is that even if the game has 50 characters, chances are that it's still going to miss someone that a fan/group of fans wanted to see. You'll never be able to please everyone by just introducing character after character. I think Sakurai's point in that regard is very legitimate. When it comes to fighters, more definitely isn't always better.

Now, there is reason to be weary about Sakurai's comment, no doubt, but my attention was on the art itself more than anything else. If that's ANY indication, and it's anyone guess at this point, the next game could be taking a more stylized approach, and this possibility really excites me. Capcom sparked something with Street Fighter IV, but a game like Super Smash Bros. could REALLY take the idea and make it much more than just a visual tweak. For instance, the slapstick nature of the first SSB is something that wasn't built upon as Nintendo created more powerful systems. If the next game goes in such a direction successfully, it really could give the series new life.

I would be happy with 8-12 characters if they were much more fleshed out and perfectly balanced.

A lot of characters in smash feel like they should just be skins.

Well its going to take more than 3 games in 14 years to get there. However I have made this case before, that they needed to not just pile in a bunch of characters, unlike what many want(particularly with the 3rd party characters)but I don't see a need for a big change in gameplay style. Though it would be funny to see them take it in a different direction right after Sony decided to clone it lol. Oh and where is the picture?

They just need to get rid of the "cloned" characters.

Example: (Fox, Falco, Wolf) What would be cool is if they added unlockable costumes for certain characters. Like the doctor mario outfit from melee, Classic Wario/sonic. Etc.

Single player needs a new direction though. Subspace was alright but it would be awesome if they could incorporate a really good story.

I still want a big roster, even if there's a few balancing issues.

Brawl has " a few balancing issues" if it got any bigger we would have a lot of balancing issues.

I can assure you that wont happen, 70 characters is too much for a fighting game to have all the characters be unique and balanced. And Brawl is flooded with content, to ask for 2 times that is like asking for the moon, so its not gonna happen.
