Give a link! There were just a lot of rumors saying "it has to have online", and "of course there's online" that people automatically assumed. It was never confirmed.
Brawl has not been confirmed to be online. The only thing I can find about online doing a google search is from E3 2006 with Sakurai saying that his plan is to have the game online. He also said that one of the primary reasons for making Brawl is because Nintendo wanted it to go online, since they were going to have the Wii be able to go online. However, this does not give a concrete confirmation that the game will indeed be online, seeing as he says PLAN.
If Nintendo is smart enough to format the gameplay four different ways depending on the controllers, then they are smart enough to add online play. If it is not online, every single Smash Bros. fan will be extremely disappointed, including me.

What's the problem with Pokemon being the first online game? That just means it gets to be the guinea pig for Wii online games. Bad for the Pokefans, good for the rest of us. :P
As for other online games within your suggested time period, I know that the BIGS is coming out, but that's all I know about.
