Alright I know its not right but how can I resist - I just so happened to search for a wireless signal the other day and found my neighbors.  I can only connect when he is home.  Is he turning something off when he is gone or not using the internet making so I cannot connect to his server?  Please let me know and please no bashing for stealing.

I don't know the answer to your question but no shame, I did the same thing when i first got my Wii before I got my own router and before my neighbor wised up and started using his WEP security.

I imagine he's turning off his router for whatever reason. And it's only stealing if he's got a secure network...otherwise it's up for grabs :)

Your neighbor probably unplugs his router or modem when hes gone, and dont worry about using some one elses connection.  Its his fault for not using security, it happens all the time.

Why would he turn off his router?  It seems like it would be a pain to turn it off and on every time he wanted to use it.

He doesnt need to turn it off - he could just be turning off the Wireless Access Point.  All it takes is a couple of clicks.

Maybe you should be a good neighbour and educate him into not transmitting his SSID or teach him to  set a WEP.

lol go ahead and use it. i use it all the time to connect online with my ps3. i really dont think its stealing unless your trying to steal a wireless connection, unless they encrpyt it and your trying to break the key....but other then that, enjoy it all you want! its their fault they dont know how to secure a wireless connection. i plan to use it once i get my wii on sunday at target (hopefully)........when would be a good time to show up early at target?

yeah. it's the router's owner's fault that he didn't encrypt his connection, and if you use it, it's not considered stealing.  i personally don't encrypt either.  i like to randomly turn it on and off though to fool whoever who uses it though :P

And speaking of routers? Can anyone tell me why mine doesn't work???? Hasn't for about a year (haha, I've never got around to fixing it). I mean, it should work, because it worked before. It just doesn't seem to be able to connect to the DSL thing. I just don't know about these things, so do any of you know anything I could try before calling those people (I need to be on hold for like an hour or something)

This is the same as running your extension cable over the fence to steal electricity from your neighbours unsecured power outlet.

How would you feel if someone did that to you?

keep in mind,  there have been cases when people have gotten in trouble for doing this.  I honestly don't care, but I'd say tread lightly.  The law in this area is kinda "grey" so its really more of a question of how much money the person has for a good lawyer, and how much you piss them off.

People who don't know anything about the internet sometimes get really weird about stuff like this.  My friend set up a wireless router in his g/f's house from her moms computer so she could get the internet in her room.  her mom freaked out and ended up calling her sister like 5 states away telling her she can just use her internet connection now because its being sent out there.

not so much stealing, but you are leeching. Your neighbor is just as at fault for leaving his network open (my dad is the same way with his home network). Me, I keep my S**t like fort knox (I am a Network Engineer after all). Im also always checking my router log like the stock market.

"He deserved to have his house broken into, he didn't lock the back door!"
"She deserves to have her tires slashed, she shouldn't park her car on the road!"
"He deserved to be mugged, he shouldn't have walked through the alley!"
"She had that rape coming, she should have been wearing a longer skirt!"

I don't mean that stealing a wireless signal is the equivalent of rape, but don't you see how silly this rationalization can get? You are stealing. You are a thief. Don't try to sugar-coat it or ask people not to point it out - you are consciously committing a crime by exploiting your ignorant neighbor. A perceived failing on the part of the victim doesn't give you license to commit a crime against them.

although I agree to a certain extent.. It's a little different actually utilizing something that is physically in your own house (referring to the wireless signal). However, using an open wireless connection to be malicious is another story.  Moral of the story, keep your network safe.

possibly, if he doesn't know how to secure his connection, he most likely does not know you can actually leave it on, even when you are not using it.

I really wouldn't care if someone was using my signal as long as they didn't take up too much bandwith, but my network is secure because I hate my noisy neighbors.

You know, after looking at a few web sites on the topic, my original position might be wrong. I didn't see how the different court cases on the subject ruled on the matter, but that open invitation the WAP sends out could be construed as giving permission. It seems I'll have to do more research to see how my position holds up to the evidence.

But stealing is still wrong, people! Don't do it! Want to steal? No deal!

I don't use security because I can't be bothered setting it all up, although luckily you'd have to be standing right outside my front door with a laptop or something to tap in. My freind who works with PC hardware was like ''but the government (british) could hover over your house with a stealth chopper and own your privacy'' :o

If I left it unsecured, I would not care. The only thing I am loosing is bandwidth, and that does not cost me extra like electricity would. If I cared about bandwidth.....I would secure it!!!

most probably he is turning of his wireless router, but its not that bad but if it is a large neibourhood and he uses internet banking you should tell him as he could get hacked and be vulnerable to fraud!
