Nintendo is going big with the online for Wii U. Not only has Nintendo said that, but EA and Ubisoft have commented as well. Just how big are they going to go? The latest rumor points to an all-out war on services.

Supposed inside information points to EA trying to talk Nintendo into using Origin as a main service for the Wii U's online action. Of course, this rumor also states that Valve is interested in getting Steam on there, but EA wants Origin to be an exclusive Wii U service deal.

Those are two pretty huge bits of information, and if they are indeed true, that's great for those hoping the Wii U online features would be robust.GoNintendo

No link, because you know how GS is sometimes. But its on GoNintendo. Anyway, interesting news if true. While personally, I have no interest in either service, a decision there could mean a lot from a business standpoint for the system. Clearly the idea is for Valve and EA is to get another source of revenue and to woo more developers into using their service(especially EA) But as we've seen EA with no competition is not a good thing, however Nintendo doesn't want to turn their nose up at EA, so its an interesting dilemma.

I hope Steam is on Wii U, which hopefully guarantees that we'll be able to find Valve games on the Wii U.

Steam is an excellent service that I would love to have on Wii U. I think Nintendo could learn a lot about online gaming through Valve. However, this is probably not real.

I'd much more prefer Steam, but either would be a huge improvement to what was on Wii.

I believe what Nintendo is going to go for is to offer a variety of online survices. Meaning that we could see both steam and Origin being avialable on the Wii U.

Yep and the same ones that rarely ever have kind words to say about the console scene.

Origin is a similar service to Steam, its just run by EA. It just started up this year.

Well it wouldn't have anything to do with Nintendo's online infrastructure, its just a service. The ideal situation would be both, but clearly EA doesn't want that, because that would do nothing to get developers to release their games through Origin.

I love Valve much more so than what EA has to offer personally. Steam is such an easy interface and is loaded with great content, and great features such as the easy friends system that functions well in-game, awesome deals/sales from time to time, and a variety of great titles from indie to big name developers. Nintendo is in a tricky spot but IMO it would be much wiser to go with Steam. EA has some problems in my experienceabout how torun online experiences(BF3 mostly); and a lot of what I've heard from buddies who use Origin to play some PC games say Steam is much better. Although to be fair, Origin is still fairly new and the WiiU could perhaps be the perfect platform to build and expand upon it. Who knows. In the end my vote goes to Steam.

Steam, more games on the service, cheaper games, more specials, easier to navigate and find what you want, it will almost gaurantee us that all of Valve's games will be on the wii-u.

They wouldn't be running the online service, a 3rd publisher cant run a consoles online infrastructure, that would be a severe conflict of interest. They would simply before offering Steam as a service, not Steam as the systems entire infrastructure.

Basically this. It would be more in line with what the PS3 is currently doing, it wouldn't be Steam or Origin running online gaming servers for all of Nintendo's games. In that regard, this system makes sense since Ninty already said they are going to have a pretty open platform for online services with the Wii U. They might BOTH be available for Wii U, though I'm not certain how that would actually be considered a good thing.

I know, but there was a rumor around E3 that valve was helping Nintendo construct the online infrastructure. False I know but still...

Did anyone here you Steam for Portal 2 on PS3??? I'm guessing it would be kind of simular. I can't say I ever used it

Nintendo hired EA to make the entire Online system for the Wii U. There is a reason at E3 Iwata and the EA dude were talking about being partnered up. EA is the biggest 3rd party to be behind the Wii U. If you saw the Roundtable after youtube you would have seen a few things they had in mind.

well when EA's president walked on stage at E3, i swore he'd talk about Origin on wii u, and believed so until the end of E3. but origin sucks. steam doesn't. gabe newell is a big fan of cross-platform stuff, so it's not far-fetched, but we've heard more of EA than of valve.

Something I wish more people would understand. Even the rumor says enough to show this only deals with digital downloads. EA as a business is trying to do what any "good" business would do. As long as Nintendo says no, we'll benefit from the competition.

Nintendo didn't hire EA to make the online system. Nintendo contracted some people from EA to help them build it in a manner that would benefit 3rd parties. The rumor is just EA essentially trying to capitalize on the situation.

Nintendo is foolish if they give Origin any kind of exclusivity on the WiiU. EA will NOT back out if they can't get it to be the only service on the new system. Origin just isn't big enough to have that kind of clout. If Nintendo goes exclusively with Origin, then they fail to realize that they are the ones in control in this situation. Or, I suppose, they are attempting to be very buddy buddy with EA for reasons I don't yet understand.

You mean besides EA being one of the biggest 3rd party publishers. Simple fact is, people may not like EA and Activision, but the situation on the Wii U would be no different than on the Wii if they don't get their support. Yeah its unlikely that EA would drop support if Nintendo didn't pick up Origin, but picking it up would give Nintendo a distinct advantage, perhaps even with exclusive big market games. There's not much of an advantage in having Steam outside of people thinking it makes the console magically better because "itz teh hardcorez" Steam would have to abide by the rules of the console, so the Steam sells and all that wouldn't happen on the Wii U. And I doubt you will be playing Wii U content on your computer or vice versa, the most you would probably get is cross platform play for a few games. And since Valve doesn't make a bunch of games, being on their good side, doesn't mean much from a software standpoint.

The Wii U definitely won't exclusively connect to Origin for the simple matter that Dragon Quest 10 isn't going to use it.

True, but to give them special privileges alienates other publishers. I just don't think its smart business to so heavily favor one publisher over others, especially when so many of those publishers are already going to be peeved that they have to compete against you (Nintendo) anyway. At least have the illusion of a level playing field.

I'm saying the smart thing for Nintendo to do would be to pick up Origin, promote the hell out of it, but not give it any exclusivity. Later, if Valve jumps on board, do the same thing.

Edit:

And since Valve doesn't make a bunch of games, being on their good side, doesn't mean much from a software standpoint.Sepewrath

It does mean a lot when you're as worried about your image as Nintendo seems to be with the WiiU.

Image will get you but so far. I think Sony learned that the hard way this gen and Nintendo has learned that lesson themselves before. People may jump on board because they hear Nintendo has Steam, but when reality sets in and the Wii U is struggling for a software standpoint or its not the Steam their use to, the image will wear off and that doesn't take very long.

And it wouldn't be a special privilege, its just a service, its like saying the Wii having Netflix alienated Hulu, clearly it didn't, because Hulu is coming to the Wii. If this is true, then its a bidding war, the one who offers the greatest gain for Nintendo would win. Anyone who is willing to deal, could throw their hat in. Personally I don't want to see them take Origins, if this is true. Because I'm not a big fan of EA and EA without competition is a terrible idea. But if they did something like offer Nintendo Mass Effect 4 exclusively, well it would be hard for Valve to top that. Options is always best for the consumer, Steam and Origin duking it out on the console could only benefit us, just them having a bidding war, would benefit the consumer and Nintendo. But it doesn't benefit either EA or Valve, that's why especially EA wants to be exclusive. Valve doesn't need to be exclusive, their already in a dominant position.

From a purely business standpoint, Nintendo would greatly benefit from one of the biggest third party develepors. As much as people don't like Origin or EA, having EA on their side practically guarantees Nintendo's chances of securing post launch support, DLC exclusives, and many other things.

that would be insanely expensive and it would never happen because both valve and EA would want exclusivity rights. plus, origin sucks.

But our vote/say wouldn't really matter anyway. I know 99% of this community and some others want to go with Valve, but EA is currently pressuring Nintendo on exclusivity and Valve doesn't care very much about the Wii U. Plus, EA is a b1tch to have on your bad side.

I would be surprised if anyone wanted to use Origin over Steam. Nintendo would be better off with it because it already has a large user base. Origin is fairly new, and only money from EA would change their minds. But given how seriously they are taking online this time, I would guess that if they were choosing between them, they would go with Steam.

I would refuse to touch the U if it utilizes Origin in any way, shape or form.
