I can explain a little more, since I was messing around with Find Mii a bit yesterday.
For every 100 steps you take, you earn 1 coin. Most things on the system only take 1 or 2 coins to purchase, however, you will want to have a BUNCH of coins because it is necessary to make progress on both games.
I managed to earn 8 coins yesterday just from taking a leisurely walk across the street to Rite-Aid, around the store, and back.
With those 8 coins, I bought 4 adventurers for Find Mii. So, I could play it.
The object of Find Mii is to take a bunch of adventurers into each stage with you to fight the ghosts. The adventurers all seem to have different magic abilities, but their attacks are pretty much alike. I think the magic they use is determined by the color of the Mii's body.
The adventurers are very expendable. You might go through two, three, or many more of them just trying to get past one room of the game. This is because the ghosts can scare them away, bringing your next adventurer in line into the fray.
In the first stage my first guy was scared off, and the girl Mii finished the stage and gained a level. So your adventurers will become stronger if you manage to pass multiple levels with them. Unfortunately in the second level, all three of my remaining adventurers were scared away. My last adventurer used Brown Magic, which summoned a Rabbit Mii to help fight, but then the Mii that summoned him ran off.
So from what I can tell, Find Mii encourages the player to go for walks or carry the 3DS with them in sleep mode as often as they can, to help obtain plenty of coins. I am sure the puzzle game works similarly - if you want to complete a puzzle, you need to have enough coins to buy all of the pieces. Also to note, you can earn a total of 10 coins per day I think, and hold onto a maximum of 300 coins overall. Check your user manual just to be sure.
