If you're a Smash Bros player, you know that Brawl had a pretty epic adventure mode in comparison to Melee. I personally loved it; what I didn't like though was how once you beat the adventure mode, you had nearly the whole character roster unlocked. This may not be an issue (and perhaps preferrable) for most of you, but one thing I loved about Melee was the challenge of unlocking all the secret characters. Am I the only one with this opinion?

I loved the epic adventure mode in Brawl, but it wouldn't have been possible with only default fighters. For the next Smash, do you think it would be strange to play as characters in adventure mode that you would not yet have access to in VS mode? Because I honestly think that is how I would like the next game to be.

Thoughts?

It wasn't perfect, but I found Brawl's adventure mode to be worthwhile. It was a respectable attempt to make the SSB world a beat-em-up as a single player experience. And unlike you, I found the ability to unlock the hidden characters a welcome attraction. I like unlocking stuff, but I'd much rather have all of the characters come to in one single-player adventure than have to grind out matches/hours to get a certain character (Mewtwo in Melee). That's not challenging so much as it is time-consuming.

That said, I'm not sure if a Subspace Emissary-like mode should happen again with the next SSB. I think the development should be able to find a balance between Melee and Brawl's adventure modes and offer something that solo players can enjoy, regardless of how much time he/she is willing to invest into it. In other words, nothing too long or is required to replay for every character, but something that's still replayable and doesn't require the time for a full-playthrough. Maybe I'm asking for too much, though...

I didn't even like the SSE all that much. It was just an okay action game at best... What did it in for me was the fact that you had to trudge through the massive level at the end which was just rehashing all the other levels. Just wasn't that much fun to me.

I was referring by playing through Subspace Emissary and unlocking the characters, as opposed to just how you unlocked them in Melee. Sorry if that didn't make much sense.

It was ultimately a mixed bag for me. Lots of great gameplay along with some just poorly-made sections. Still, I enjoyed it.

Oh.. Yeah, that makes it easier if you just get the unlocking over with, but I never found myself playing multi-man brawl without a reward

I agree. However, unlocking Mewtwo and Game & Watch in Melee was overkill.

I really only found SSE fun while in Co-op with a higher difficulty. The mode lacked soul. Melee's adventure mode was short, but sweet. But it lost its novelty after a couple of playthroughs trying to unlock the characters.

I finished SSE, but I got no enjoyment out of it. Create interesting level designs for an adventure mode, balance the characters, fix the online mode or scrap them altogether.

It was fun but ultimately a waste of time, the next Smash can do without it. I played it once and never went back to it but everything else in the game was great.

Eh I thought it was pretty bad. The fighting was fun but the levels and pacing were rubbish. Reminded me of the beat em up single player mode in some of the PS2 Mortal Kombat games.

a solid SSBB player like me deserves what the featurette offers, finish the game to unlock nearly all the essentials(I know most of you don't want that "last person to join") took me 2 months because I need stickers to make things easier

How are you a solid SSBB player if you needed stickers to make it easier? Just lower the difficulty a bit.

stickers have effects, not just a worthy collectors' edition, they do make me feel like steroids-on-the-go,collect them and it will be useful enough to fight
Tabuu
when it comes for difficulty, always start with easy,I beat it with less fuss. I don't like Mario being the whole hero of the adventure(in my gameplay experience,he doesn't use stickers at all,and I used him as a human shield instead)

easy to intense...they have their payouts...I like it easy to hard(only few stages I can go with hard)

I would say it is a good option to provide some entertaining single-player gameplay in a game that is not at all focused on it. It just needs a few tweaks.

Complete garbage

This is what happened

You have a roster of characters with all different strengths and weakness, Mario is a jumper, Sonic is fast, Yoshi....does whatever a useless dog does.

The levels had to be built for everyone and that means they were all pure rubbish, unimaginative wastes of time that serves no purpose at all.

The problem is that you can't switch it up and make levels that play into character's strengths because who wants to play that?

"Hey it's awesome to go really fast though here, let me choose Mario so I can slog through this level" No, you just play as Sonic.

"This level has plenty of things to cut down with a sword, let's choose Kirby!" You pick Link or Captain Fire Emblem.

The story itself wasn't bad but everything else to do with it made Smash Bros worse.

I liked the story, I loved the boss battles, and I REALLY enjoyed the cutscenes (The Great Invasion was so epic). The gameplay was meh and I hope they improve it in the next Smash Bros Single Player Mode.

I would also like less filler. The Subspace Emissary could have ended when they found Tabuu. The final 30-40% of it felt redundant.

you mean the part where you get to explore a larger zone? i thought it was pretty cool, reminded me of the hyrule part of melee's adventure mode.

It was okay. Wasted potential that could have been a lot more though. Most levels were boring and uninspiring. Enemies felt generic and bland. The story felt like a terrible fan fiction. And to me, the lack of voice acting (For characters that can actually talk) during cut scenes was definitely annoying (Should have been more interaction between characters instead of handshakes and gestures..). The only thing that was entertaining about Subspace Emissary was the boss battles....

Don't bother. Make a short adventure mode like from Melee and be done with it. Its a fighter, they should spend more time focusing on and balancing the fighting mechanics and making the best fighting game they can

I wouldn't mind them putting a story in there as long as they make the story seem less fan fiction-ish. Maybe create individual stories for each character (Mario and his company get Mario Bros. oriented stages/story, Samus gets her own adventure, Zelda cast get their own adventure, etc). I know it won't happen because that would be asking too much, but its just an idea....

Kudos my good man. I got into it from the PS2 games Gungrave and Gungrave Overdose. The Anime did start off kinda slow but man did it open up. The games do Brandon justice as well. I highly recommend you get them. BTW, I am not making this up, when Gungrave Overdose came out, I called EB games and they said it was $14.99 Brand new, it had just finished storming from a recent hurricane that came through me city, I drove across town, through knocked over trees, malfunctioning traffic lights, power outages and more just to grab that game before they decided to jack the price up. Little did I know that it would be $14.99 forever lol And man what a Heck of a deal it is.

Subspace Emissary... It can go two ways for me. For one, I enjoyed playing through it a lot more than playing through Melee's version of an Adventure mode. I actually did not get bored with it and I really liked hunting down those yellow and blue boxes within each stage. Also, it was a lot more of a relief to unlock all the characters through that mode rather than grind around until I get all the characters unlocked. But my only problem with the mode was how they did Sonic. Being a Sonic fanboy, which is hard to be considering SEGA's reputation to make some pretty BS'ey Sonic games, I really did not like how he just "appeared" out of nowhere during Subspace Emissary. Even Snake had a better entrance than Sonic. I could tell Nintendo just, literally, threw him in the game after playing through that mode, lol. Otherwise, I hope they make another adventure mode for the next Smash Bros. I don't want it exactly like Subspace Emissary, but I want it to be some type of a story-related mode nonetheless. And for the love of all that is loveable, if they're going to include Sonic in the next game, PLEASE let him have some kind of a story within the story and not just toss him in the mode once you're on the final boss because if Nintendo is going to do that again, I'd rather just unlock Sonic like I did with Toon Link, Jigglypuff, and Wolf on Subspace Emissary. (I swear, I still believe Wolf points out his middle finger during his cutscene on there).
