My kid wants a Nintendo DS for is 6year b'day. He also wants a Pokemon game.

I know nothing about games since the original game boy of 15-20 years ago is the last thing I played.

Seems the ratings are about content which is good but there's no info a playability. I want to find a game or two that is playable by a 6yo and won't be frustrating. He says he wants a Pokemon and I have no idea if any of them are playable by a 6yo. The only video games he plays right now are some of the Webkin games online. Some he can play and some are still to complicated for him.

Suggestions?

I agree and having a little one myself I have found that my 6 yr old boy loves to play New Super Mario Bros. Also Mario Kart is another favorite.

Yea the New Super Mario Bros. is a good one. But stay away from Pokemon. It is a fun game, but has alot of reading which I am guessing at six, your son isn't to good at yet. I would say Animal Crossing, but again, there is alot of reading for a six year old.

New Super Mario Bros would probably be pretty easy for him, as well as Nintendogs. It's not so much a game as virtual pet, similar to the webkins that you said he is playing right now

Like these people have said... get him Pokemon if he can read well, but if not, it'll just be more frustration than fun.  It's a text-heavy game like any RPG.  Also like the above posters have said, Nintendogs, Mario Kart, and NSMB are good. I also recommend Kirby Canvas Curse and Elite Beat Agents, but only the latter if you approve of the E10+ rating.

We got a 6 year old a DS and he took a new copy of Sonic Rush I had bought but hadn't yet played alot and opened up 3 levels by just picking it up and playing it. With me I'd be back looking at the book going 'uh, let's see, B is jump...' He loves Elite Beat Agents although not being that experienced with a pencil shows up a little but playing the game has to help with that as well as number recognition and hand to eye coordination. He's into it as much as anyone who has ever played this game which is slightly obsessed! One thing though is encouraging he use headphones otherwise you'll be hearing constant low fidelity versions of Material Girl etc. As far as the content; you could nitpick but basically the comics that accompany the game sometimes hit a level similar to Archie comics, you know, Betty and Veronica. ---Besides Elite Beat Agents I'd recommend Mario Kart. ---For more info on game content go back to the DS section of this site and read the reviews of the games.
