i've recently been introduced to these games, and have heard that a second one is coming out. If i were to buy the second game, would i get confused with the story line? i know that the second game takes place a few years after the first, so thats why i'm wondering.

or

would i just be better off looking for the first game, buy it, then play it, then go through the second game?

You would better understand the story if you got the first one, but you dont need it to play the second one. You're fine without the first one but it can help you out. You could just ask around for the story.

I would just get the first game and play it before you play the second. ToS is a great RPG for the cube and you shouldn't miss out on it. Since ToS seems to be a direct sequel it would be best to play the first game beforehand.

Regardless of whether or not you need it (preliminary reports say you don't because of extensive explanation of the previous story) you will miss out on many other things of the game. You will also be missing out on one of the greatest RPG's ever made.

The new one is more of a spin off than a sequel.

I think it's hard to tell that. I think it's more a sequel. However, hardcore tales of games say it's not from the motherline. I consider it as a sequel because it's on the same time line and the original characters of TOS will be there to have important roles.

I really need to play again at Tales of Symphonia.

i think that i've decided that if i can, i'll get the first one, but if there's no way i can (for some odd reasons, i don't know what), i'll just get the second one.

I might have decided to buy TOS 2, but that cool Kratos swordsman guy isn't playable in it, and I never played the first one and don't know if I wanna go looking for GCN games yet. Hmm...gives me an idea for a thread.
