I've been staying pretty caught up with all the news about the 3DS and reading many different articles. I've noticed in some of the comments though that some people seem to not realize this is a next-gen handheld, not another DS? The name "3DS" may not even be official, it may end up under a completely different name once it's closer to being released. From all the articles out there, Nintendo is trying to make it clear that this new system will have improved graphics (maybe gamecube level) and the 3D aspect is just an additional feature which they even admitted that it can be turned off. Correct me if I seem to be misunderstanding people who make comments like "If you turn off the 3D then it's a normal DS", but to all of you who think this is "just another DS", this is a next generation handheld for Nintendo, it's not just another system on the DS line.

One of an endless number of sources that say it's next-gen:http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20002388-17.html

People still don't understand the 3DS isn't a DS? Nintendo should've codenamed it something else for the stupid.

it is still not going to be as good as the PSP, plus there is a good chance Sony will announce the PSP2 in E3 2010, that thing will be a powerhouse.The_Cygan

I thought you compared systems in System wars not here

to be honest all the articles make it rather obvious,,,people just dont pay enough attention to what they read sometimes and sometimes they get daft ideas in their heads, I mean I can remember not to long back someone trying to convince me that the DSI and DSI XL was an entirely new platform rather than an upgrade to the DS line of consoles... It takes all kinds here at gamespot

Game Boy
Game Boy Pocket
Game Boy Light
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance
Game Boy Advance SP
Game Boy Advance SP - Now with a BRIGHTER backlit screen! (aka "Mk II")
Game Boy Micro

And that's not even getting into the naming conventions of their rivals.

There will be a LOT of pissed off gamers if this 3DS or whatever it should called doesn't support current DS games. Me included.

Honestly, why make a new console when the DS is selling so well? And so soon?

I was going to buy a DSi in the next couple of weeks to replace my Lite but now... now I might wait for this...

I've grown up with Nintendo and have always loved their games - Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, etc... but honestly, they don't treat their customers very well. Generally the gamers I know don't have money to be spending all the time on console upgrades.

Kuribo_Girl

The 3DS will be backwards compatible. Just as the Game Boy Advance was BC with original Game Boy games.

"So soon"? The typical span of a console generation is 5-6 years, and the DS was released five and a half years ago.

Sure, it was released 5 or 6 years ago, but it's far from a "dead" console. It gets new games all the time.

I'm glad it will be backwards compatible. So what will be different then? The graphics? I am guessing there will be new 3D games made for it that will either

a) not be playable on current DSs or

b) be playable but not with new/3D graphics.

Do you think I should wait for this console or buy a DSi?

Besides the 3D capabilities, the handheld will be more powerful. There are some reports of it having an analog stick and possibly vibration functionality built in too. No, 3DS games will not work on an existing DS. No more than Wii games would work work on a Gamecube.

If you already have a DS then I would say don't bother with the DSi. Wait for the new system.

I will wait then.

Do you know if there is any more information at this stage?

It's supposed to be released by next March (didn't say if it was just Japan or not, though), but there will probably be details at E3 on June 15.

I know I've said this before, and I'll say it again: a platform is only as good as the games made for it. I'll wait until I see a game for it before I become impressed (though given the DS's run, I imagine it will be well-supported).

Looks like I might wait for that instead of upgrading my old DS which is nearly 5 years old now.

Although I typically buy new Nintendo game systems from Day one, I might have to wait on this one. Seems to me that buying a 3D game system from day one would be like buying a 3D television before there are any TV shows done in 3D. It might be better for me to wait until there are actually a lot of 3D games available. I normally buy used games for cheaper at Game Stop anyway, so I figure I'll still have a couple more years' worth of games for my DSi XL to keep me busy.

Launch titles will be interesting... we can expect new installments in a lot of core Nintendo franchises on a new console/handheld, so that's what I'm interested in seeing.

What surprised me is that a fairly significant number of games jounalists seemed to think it was just the next DS phase despite Nintendo specifically saying it wasn't. I forget which site it was, I think it was probably IGN, but they had an article where a load of their writers put their opinions in and most of them seemed to think it was just gonna be a DS with added 3D effects.

Personally I'm hoping for a fairly significant change to the system to allow for better 3D gameplay. Mario 64 controlled really badly on the DS, and 3D games often looked pretty bad on it as well. I don't get too bogged down with graphics etc but I'm still hoping for a significant improvement.

agreed, personally I wont touch it if its just a DS with 3D capability,,,I dont really care about 3D (wait sorry I thought gaming already had a "3D revolution" ... works for films but its weird phrase for games) and the DS in my opinion was never near powerful enough

Kotaku just posted this pic of possible testbed hardware for the 3DS:

The little white bit on the bottom certainly does look like an analog stick to me.

Well if it's going to have GC/Wii level fo graphics then anyone just has to look at a game being played on it to know it's a whole lot more than another DS rehash.

so many people still focused on the graphics, hasnt the DS and Wii shown everyone that graphics are not the deciding factor?

I hope they change the name, because a lot of people are still going to think it's another DS remake... It's just a code name though, so I'm not worried.

They're not the deciding factor by any means. IMO the DS has the best library of games of any machine currently available, despite it's limitations.

But it's better to have good graphics than bad graphics - if they still look antiquated it's not going to feel much like an upgrade, and 3D graphics on the DS often look poor, at best mediocre. I'm definitely hoping for graphics approaching Gamecube level (or PSP level at least) and hopefully an analogue stick to made 3D controls work well. A more precise touch screen would be cool if that's possible as well.

As great as the DS is, it is still hampered by it's limitations. A more powerful system offers a wider range of possibilities, and while gameplay comes first, it really helps if a game looks nice. Again, as games like Galaxy and Okami proved (imo), the art design is more important than the technical quality of the graphics, but on a system like the DS, even nice art design isn't usually enough for many types of games. It's one thing to say gameplay > graphics, but visuals DO matter in many games in order to enhance the atmosphere, eg Okami.
