I bought my 2000 point card and classic controller when I found the combo on sale pretty cheap months ago just because it was reported they were going to release this and they finally did. I'll be downloading tomorrow and will have lots of time wasted over the next month or so.

Thank you Nintendo and Square Enix, early christmas gift for me. :)

I prefer the Dragon Quest Series. I hope they come on the VC.

But still cool to have an RPG classic.

I had it back for the NES

i could never get past Garland, the first boss. one time I did, but accidentally walked out of the castle, confused, then didn't save for some reason. (I was 8 I think, maybe younger)

My cart then broke

I have it for the PS1. The disc has both FFI and FFII on it with updated everything. BTW, Final Fantasy VI is the greatest RPG ever made.

One of the first but not the best imo. I would rather have Dragon Quest but that's partly due to me already owning this game for the GBA and NES.

there are certain games I wouldn't mind having on VC. Final Fantasy 1 isn't one of them. It's not because I don't appreciate the road that game set up for gaming itself but A friend of my brothers gave be a mint condition copy of the original NES game with box and book well intacted. My NES isn't working as well as it could so I don't chance playing it but I did once and its amazing to look at that game then take a gander at screen shots of 13 and wonder how you go from one to another. Technology ROCKS!!!

This game was the reason I made my parents buy me a nes. up to that point, I wasted hours playing the ole commodore 64. I am glad this finally made it to virtual console...time for some nostalgia

i hate to say this because i loved the game as a kid but ff1 is a poorly made game sure its fun and a classic but being a classic doesn't make it great or even best rpg of all time and i will download it when i get a chance but only for the memories and i agree with cyan ff6 is one of the best rpgs of all time if not at least the best ff game

I never knew that Chrono Trigger or FF6 were there. Final Fantasy 1 is very archaic for me. At least, classic Final Fantasy are there.

not even close. it was actually bad, if you compare with what we have today (which is what you're doing). it's a ridiculously important game, but it doesnt mean it's the best of it's kind.

I never got the PS1/GBA remakes, only played about 5 hours worth of the original at a friend's about 6-7 years ago. Getting through some of the older RPGs just becomes a chore to me, and I don't want to invest time in a game that feels like a chore. So I'm on the fence about whether I want this for VC and would like to give it another go. My latest experience has been Breath of Fire II and I simply CANNOT bring myself to trudge through that mess. I loved the first though.

And as a side note, FF1 should not even be mentioned in the same breath as games like Lufia II, Earthbound, FF6 and SMRPG. I would like to see all four of those titles on the VC someday, but at least we got one.

What does Final Fantasy have to do with the best RPG ever? ;) Personally, I'd prefer to see Might and Magic 1-5, though I'm glad some people are getting what they want.

Personally, "Final Fantasy" is my favorite game series of ALL TIME (thought I don't agree that FF1 is the best of them all, it would have to be FF 6, 7, 8, or 9, maybe 10); but I don't think I'l be buying this virtual console edition (I've bought: The PS1 version-which also brings FF2; the gameboy version--the best in my opinion, the PSP version which is pretty good but I prefer the original graphics).

I agree 100% that this is the greatest RPG series of all time (I know many of you disagree, but this is my personal opinion) and Square-Enix (formerly Square-Soft) was saved by this game and has become one of the gaming industries greatest game developers/publishers since 1986.

Long Live Final Fantasy!

I made the mistake of playing FF2 for the SNES before the original FF. As such, there is nothing interesting to see in the original...

Final fantasy 1... I don't think it has aged well. It was superb for it's time though, and considering the brownie points i give it for saving squaresoft. (everyone who has read about the reasoning for the title final fantasy knows this)

It deserves a place in the legendary bracket.

Best rpg ever made? Naah.

Haters.

=)

P.S. Yes I know it had issues (like attacking nothing if something was already killed, couple little bugs here and there, etc) but I stand by my best RPG of all time comment. Most "new" games just seem dumbed down to me, idk why.

that's basically what i meant, but with more details (getting the name from saving square... or being square's last attempt, in case it went wrong)

FF1 was way advanced for its time. An inventory where you can change weapons/equipment, a very in depth story (for the time), and an enormous world to explore. I dont think its the greatest rpg ever, probably top 5 due to it being probably the most influential.

Anybody using the phrase 'best RPG ever made' is asking for trouble. Thats why the qualifier 'IMO' was invented. I'm stunned this thread hasn't already been inundated by every Final Fantasy fan and his dog, all baying for OP's blood! By the way I still support FF7 as top dog, unfashionable as that seems to be nowadays. If you're a moron say 'fanboy'!

I'll say this much, Final Fantasy is one of the best RPG series out there, & I'll leave it at that. I'm still hooked on Ocarina of Time & Zelda series.

IMO does not need to be repeated with every statement as it's a given. It is impossible to say anything about the best game of all time without your opinion being part of the equation. Therefore I will not say 'IMO' when I say the following: FFI is not the best RPG, nor even the best FF game. Those honours belong to Chrono Trigger and FFIV respectively.

uuuh... no. the fact that it was the first RPG on a videogame ever (i might have to check it, but from what i remember i'm correct) makes its influences spread on almost anything slightly related to RPG.

another reason to care about FF1's influence. no FF1 = no square games after FF1. and those games were pretty important and influential... and if i'm not mistaken, the square-enix fusion was square saving enix, which wouldnt happen if square wasnt running.

There were video game RPGs long before Final Fantasy. The first Ultima, for example, was released in 1980. Even on the NES, Dragon Quest (1986) predates Final Fantasy (1987) by a year and console RPGs as a whole began a generation earlier on the Atari 2600.

like i said, i could be mistaken. still, one cant deny square's influence in the gaming world. for example, they created the ATB battle system for RPGs, that i'm 99.9% sure of (there's always the chance an obscure game did it first, or i just cant remember it, so lets not say 100%).

still, no square enix if square wasnt alive, which means no enix :P

I have yet to play anything above FF3, maybe I'll pick up 6.

Everyones criticism on FF1 is fine, it does have bugs and little issues here and there but for me it adds to the character of the game. Now if I can get the original DragonQuest and AeroBiz / AeroBiz SuperSonic I'll have all my favorite old time games to replay.
