Oh c'mon. It's not that bad of an idea. If the touch screen alowed multi-touch, game developers could program their own "buttons" onto the touchsscreen. The only problem I see is a huge fingerprint problem:

The controller configurations might actually work but it would put too much stress on the touch screen. On the DS, the touch screen isnt always used, but after a while of use, the touch screen starts to fail in certain areas. That Idea could work if this problem was fixed.

Think of the iPhone. They put a durable Touch Screen on that. Think of it on a DS.

Bingo.

Here is my cheap Bitmap i whipped up for the next-gen of Nintendo handheld.

The touch screen is the controller, the only buttons are L, R, and the power. It has a 2 GB SD card and has 256 colors. It can play DS Evo, DS, and GBA games. It has video-audio-image capable internet from home screen, and is TXT message capable through celluar service. more to come. how do you like it? Feel free to Photoshop it.

geardawg

You are aware the current real DS can display up to 260,000 colours right?

Doubt he meant 256 bit considering 48/64-bit colour displays are an extreme rarity iirc.

The Nintendo Gameboy DS ( i know, dumb name ) will have TWO touch sensitive screens, built in rumble, mic, and camera.

A D-pad and Joystick attachment. Four buttons, start, select, and left and right buttons like the gamecube controller.

And will have a retail price of 12,000 Yen.

First everyone thought this was a lousy idea then somewhere along the line it was a good idea because of the buttons on the screen? I still think it's a bad idea with that because you've really eliminated the idea of having the second screen and it's not to put the buttons on it.

Well there's no denying a Widescreen DS would be great, but I alreayd love that system - I've never taken an afterthought about the graphics at all either really. But though Text Messaging and other stuff - I buy the system just for the games. Other features are nice too though, but it's all about the games. :D

I think that thing is a really bad idea. Eliminating all the buttons and replacing the with more touch screen? You've gotta have buttons, man. And even with buttons on the screen, it's still a bad idea. You have alot more chance of pressing the wrong thing. The txt messages and stuff sounds good though, and I like the name. But you have got to do something with the screen. And the frame. Don't build off the lite frame, it's horible, why do you think the lites break?! Use the original frame. More color display would be nice too. I like the your idea (well, part of it) but if you wanna design the next DS your have realy got to improve.:P

no. i like real buttons. they're needed. the iTouch needs to make digital buttons that take at least half the screen and dont work that well.

EDIT: agh, fooled by the zombie thread trick again >_>

No wonder some people don't believe in evolution because this handheld is an absolute failure of an idea. One can't have a serious handheld gaming console with only shoulder buttons. This handheld is going to win a Darwin Award for extincting the DS line if it comes out looking like this one.

Well, on one hand this is a zombie thread, on the other hand, the recent announcement of next gen DS possibly having tegra chipset means it`s time to bust out the concepts again! Some of you might remember this lovely little mockup http://gizmodo.com/339601/nintendo-ds-2-the-3d-mock+up-makes-us-drool-alien+style (More can be found here: http://www.4colorrebellion.com/nintendo-ds-mockups/) I wouldn't want it to come out until late 2011 and beyond but that period where the mockups start flowing is always in interesting time. Anybody remember all the Nintendo "Revolution" mockups? We saw everything from buttons that emit heat, to virtual reality.

IMO, all they'd need to do to move on to "the next gen" is make a super powerful DSi with an accurate multi-touch screen... thinking about it again, i cant see multi-touch being well used while there are buttons there...
