So I was at school looking over the shoulder of one of my classmates as he was playing with his iPod Touch. He was playing some BMX game where you just free ride around. As he was hitting dirt mounds I realized that these graphics are pretty good. The resolution was good. The textures were good. Everything was nice. And then I thought it looked better than the DS but threw that idea out the window noting how the DS is a dedicated gaming machine and there is no way the iPod could have better graphics. But then I realized that the DS is pretty old. The very first version of it was released in '04. That's a pretty long time ago.

At the rate technology is advancing, it is rather feasible the iPod has better graphics capability. When I compare the textures of any 3D DS game like Metroid or some other to a 3D iPod game, the iPod sure does look better. Maybe iPod games are more simple and don't have as much happening on-screen but the textures and everything else sure look a lot crisper. Maybe its time for a new generation of handhelds?

And maybe if people would read what I have written, they will realize that I'n not saying graphics make the game; they just make the game a lot more fun. If people don't care about graphics at all then we might as well be playing Halo 3 in Halo CE graphics.

The internet has probably shaved off years of my life because of all the ignorant idiots.

I am going to be honest to you. The Ipod Touch games suck. I have an Ipod touch the games are not good at all.

I guess it does sound outdated when you make the comparison...

This. I know people that have only an iPod Touch... and they consider that their console.

I have one, and rarely use it... iPod Touch games are just terrible.

iPod Touch just has higher res textures and a texture filter. In terms of model complexity I'm pretty sure either the DS wins or they're about even.

EDIT: Come to think of it, the iPod Touch has a lot of things the DS doesn't, but the amount of polys it can display is about the same or less. Also, the DS usually has the best gameplay of any handheld(depending on the type of game). The iPod touch is hindered as a gaming system due to the lack of buttons.

When i read your topic title the first comment that came to my mind is "guezz.. i bet my soul that is another topic about graphics", and guess what? It really is.

Indeed, its true that nowadays Ipod possible CAN be more advanced than a DS and have better graphics (specially because the DS was made at 2004), but that also doesn`t means that the games are better, IMO.

Ipod and cellphone games are really simple, they just throw in the graphics and the basic content of a game and done, you don`t need anything else.

But even still, there are DS games with good graphics, check these photos:

The games on the ipod are simple though and don't compare to the complexity of games that you would find on the ds.

Yes, the iPod Touch is more advanced in terms of graphics than the DS. And yes, the DS hardware is quite outdated.

But that doesn't make the games any less fun.

I'm totally content with a portable, touch screen Nintendo 64. And a LOT of the iPod apps suck. There are a few gems, though, like Tap Tap Revenge.

the itouch does look really cool, but think, only a touchscreen to play games, how complex can the gamebe? remember, the wii has horrible graphics compared to xbox but it still holds it own

Come on! The eye pod touch doesn't even have buttons so the games come in only 2 genres, shake'em ups and rail games.

i hope in a few years they take the ideas they had in DSi and make a full DS2. DS evolved, etc.

3.5 inch 480x272 LCD dual touch screens, a flip open Sidekick style body so you could use the top screen just for touch with the buttons on the same level, but flip the screen up and it reveals the lower touch screen.

at least GameCube graphics, but maybe in 2011/2012 it could have near 600Mhz CPU and smartfone-ish RAM like 64MB or 128MB RAM. hopefully games will be using cheap flash memory having 4GB's.

that'd be great. Resident Evil 4, Wind Waker on the Go on DS.

but what do you call it? DS evolved? Super Nintendo Dual Screen?

Tri-Screen? oh no

i'm honestly shocked there hasn't been a limited edition Poketech st yled DS by now

GBE; Gameboy Evolution

as much as it may be cool to have the Game Boy name, it won't happen

DS is a huge brand name, until it fails, it sholdn't be changed. Maybe a GameBoy Phone (Nintendo patented one) but i'd doubt they'd go back to GB.

the DS is marketed to casuals as not just a games console, but a life st yle device with the Training games, and Lisa Kudrow (lol) the name Game Boy can alienate some non-gamers into thinking its a complicated game system not made for them

but DS, they prolly don't know it means Designers System or Dual Screen, but they see Brain Age, Layton, Personal Trainer, and think it can be for them and not just hardcore gamers. thats nintendo's blue ocean strategy

Get casuals into Brain Age, then sell them Mario, then Zelda, then Metroid.

Game Boy is cool, but Dual Screen is the future

EDIT: 4,500th post!! Yay

I'm not saying that graphics are better than gameplay. I am just pointing out that the DS in general is rather dated, and when an MP3 player can look better than a DS I think it is about time we all upgraded to something a little newer.

I think you are either playing the wrong games or that we need to take trip to system wars to finish this.

Why should Nintendo bother when the DS could easily last 8 years and probably could last 12 years.

That is really over the line, its aging at the moment but to say it will last another 4-8 years is just plain wrong, I mean one day within that time period the average person will get sick of playing games that look worse then a N64 game in 2014 while you have another company with a handheld that is displaying beautiful vibrant 3D.

There are somethings I would like to see on the DS, but it just isn't powerful enough. The hardware limits it more than the PSP, but good games can still come out on the DS. They will just be a limited more in genre and scope.

Okay, most iPod touch games suck. They're fun for a bit but not for long. And graphics aren't the only thing that makes of a gaming console. By the way, it can't be that outdated since many celebrities have been paying attention to it, and endorsing something outdated is terrible for a celebrities image. Beyonce Knowles(Pop star), Lights a.k.a. "Wonder Woman"(Lights band member), Lisa Kudrow("Friends" co-star), Liv Tyler(movie star), Carrie Underwood, America Ferrara and some other guy that played with Rythm Heaven on the Nintendo Channel. With all these celebrity endorsements, its just becoming more popular than ever.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UCWJtxSTYw You tell me the N64 can pull off those graphics and i'm gonna call you a liar. The graphics are almost exactly equal to the PS2's Dragon Quest IIX.

That is a very basic cell shaded game, as you can see its very low in terms of whats happening on screen so clearly it should run, but try and work something like Majoras mask on the DS then we will talk, but in terms of cell shaded graphics, during the 5th gen there was very little if any highly acclaimed cell tittles so its hard to judge.

The DS had outdated hardware when it launched. The PSP is way ahead in terms of hardware and was only released a few months after. If you bought the DS for graphics, you probably purchased the wrong system.

That mp3 player was modeled after a very powerful smartphone. Smartphones need to be powerful to handle tasks that would cripple normal phones, ergo the 400 sumthin megahertz processor. PDA's proccesors run in the 600~700MHz range. They're meant to be like mini computers, they have to be powerful. All Apple did was add some extra VRAM(helps with rendering graphics) to run that flashy OS of theirs and realized they could use it for gaming.

P.S. The DS's processor is 67MHz, the DSi 133MHz, the PSP, 333Mhz, all of which falling short of the iPhone.
