A couple days ago Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter reported that Nintendo could be coming out with a new handheld system as early as this year. Well here's my response to that...

If a new Nintendo handheld was launching this year they (Nintendo) would've announced it during E3. Their whole entire show would've been designed around their new machine since they didn't have much to offer fans this year. Plus, why in the heck would they come out with the first ever Grand Theft Auto title for the DS later this year if they are potentially trying to push sales for a new handheld?

The fact is is that Michael Pachter is an idiot and needs to think up a better, more believable rumor.

And to the latest reports saying that the PSP is "dominating" the Japanese market I have this to say in response... I don't doubt that the PSP is "winning" for the time being but come on, we all know that the only reason why the DS and Wii (but the DS in particular) sales are slipping in Japan is because everyone and their dog already owns one. Nintendo has no-one left to sell to, ergo more people buying PSPs.

Your thoughts...

At E3 Reggie said that they weren't going to release another DS for at least 2 to 3 years, because the DS sails were so high in the U.S.

If they were making a new handheld, why would they say they're planning on some new content for the DS anyway. -_- In an interview, didn't Nintendo say they were going to try expanding DS capabilities or something to make them sort of a 'must have' for families in Japan?

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Nintendo plans on expanding the capabilities of the DS. In fact I've been almost counting on them doing something like that. I think they should focus more attention though on the connectivity between the DS and the Wii because there hasn't been as much progress in that area for Nintendo like they originally had hoped.

I have heard that Nintendo is bringing the DS cookbook (it stores recipes and such) to the USA because it's been immensely popular over in Japan. So that'll probably boost the sales even higher for an already rising US women's market.

Who cares about some lame cookbook game for the DS that will boost sales and bring even more $ for Nintendo? Theyre already popular in the womans market, im more interested in seeing some more awesome games being made for the DS, like the upcoming Castlevania.

I don't think the cookbook is a game. It's like a storage device. And obviously Nintendo cares about bringing in more $ for Nintendo or else they wouldn't be bringing it to the states. I know the DS is popular in the women's market. In fact, the DS almost has a 1:1 selling ratio between men and women (I think it's 52% men and 48% women).

So yes, maybe Nintendo doesn't need to sell the cookbook to American women because sales in general are at an all time high but, if you personally could make something super cheap and sell it as an extension for more personal use (like the cookbook) and even rack up 5-15% more sales for your machine at the very minimum, you're saying you wouldn't do it? I would...

Thats not what I meant, of course Nintendo would sell software like that to generate more income, and of course THEY care for stuff like that, my point is that why should WE as gamers concern ourselves about the sales of a certain company. Sure, its nice to hear nintendo's doing fine, but what does it tell us? The fact that theyre rich and doing good on the market doesnt guarantee the quality of their products. Therefore im more interested in seeing more quality games come out, then to concern myself with how well nintendo's sales are doing thanks to some lame-ass software.

Maybe a bit off-topic and you could probably discern it from the above, but i feel Nintendo is kinda neglecting their old fanbase. Cooking games and brain training may be very popular worldwide, but i'd leek to see some more action in the form of more "hardcore" games (zelda for the wii?). And after seeing this year's E3, it doesnt look like we can expect any from nintendo anytime soon.

Being a single guy who enjoys cooking, I'm actually very much so looking forward to the cookbook program. Not everyone lives at home and has mommy cook for them, you know...

if you think the timing is what is going to be the problem then you might want to take in account that the new ds will be out in Japan only for some time

also, if they are to make ds 2 games then I'm sure they would make the original ds games compatible either by taking out the gba slot and adding a different one or ds1 and ds2 games could share a slot I thought that would seem a little obvious to everyone

Another Ds fanboy ?

Anyway , i also think that Ds 2 is just a rumor. Why would they release so many new titles (GTA:Chinatown Wars etc) for a console that would soon die ?

Well I can't speak for anyone but myself, but personally I like to see how Nintendo is doing as a whole. I wish I had bought some of their stock on Wall-Street because before the Wii came out they didn't even cost $10 a share and now they're over $60 a share. You're right though, just because a company is doing good doesn't mean their products have the best quality however, I'd like to think that Nintendo is different. I know for a fact that before they put out their machines for the public to buy that their systems go through rigorous testing processes unlike Microsoft and Sony hence, why so many Xbox's, Xbox 360's and PS2's have been returned due to defects or breakdowns.

I don't think Nintendo is neglecting their fan-base, but they definitely have a global wision now with the success that is Wii. Shigeru Miyamoto a couple weeks ago said that Nintendo's designated teams (like Mario, Zelda, etc.) for their original fanbase are always in progress and confirmed that there will new a Zelda title for Wii and for the DS. Now it would've been nice to see even a little raw footage from those games at E3 but I guess we'll have to wait until next year. I see where you're coming though about feeling left out. Nintendo definitely did not deliver at this years E3. I was seriously hoping for a new Kid Icarus title on Wii.

Come on, you should learn more about video games before posting. Nintendo coming out with GTA?? Um, no! Nintendo does not make GTA, it belongs to Rockstar. That's quite the bit of misinformation. Nintendo doesn't decide when other companies launch their games, those companies do.

No, not everyone in Japan has a DS. This is just silly. There are 130 million people in Japan, and all the DSs sold on the entire planet number 78 million. Again, a little more common knowledge would help you avoid making these kinds of statements!

You know it's funny that no-one else but you interpreted my opening post in this topic as me saying that Nintendo makes GTA. I never said that they made GTA and I never said that that series belongs to Nintendo either. I know all about Rockstar and their GTA titles. So before you go spouting off at the mouth, read more carefully next time.

One more thing, Nintendo is the one that sells or gives away their Dev-Kit's for companies like Rockstar to make games for their systems. Nintendo while not making GTA DOES have at least some say as to when games come out. It's the same with other companies. That's why you never see big name games on the shelf right before a brand new state of the art piece of hardware comes out, because it would either decrease the sales of the new system or decrease the sales of the game. They (Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony) would put those games on the shelves either a couple months beforehand or after the new system has had a chance to sell so that it won't effect the sales of either product.

Let me make myself clear... again.

My point was that the reason because the sales in Japan are taking a big slip is because a lot of casual gamers and the hardcore gamers have already boughten DSs, so now they're buying PSPs. I obviously know that every man, woman and child in Japan do not have a DS.. nor do they all have TV, cable internet nor the money to buy such things.

For you to take me seriously on every single word that I say or type (your choice), not read between lines and not use some common sense is very amusing to me.
