The game recommendation thread needs an update... what's missing?

Since I base the recommendation list in the stickied thread on the most recommended games from users of this forum, it would help me if I could get opinions about what games should be added to (or deleted from) the list.

So here's how I want to do this:

List any games you think should be included in or deleted from the thread,
Note which section it would belong in (Must Have, Party, Online multiplayer, Other, WiiWare), and
Explain why you think it's widely appealing.

Don't list games that are already on the list!

I'm also looking for any suggestions on improving the format, specifically the section titles, though I'm much more interested in hearing your recommendations.

Also, if someone has already listed a game that isn't on the list, feel free to repeat it with your own explanation. I won't know if a lot of people are recommending the same game unless they all speak up. :)

De Blob

A platformer that's easy to pick up and play and is very fun. Each level provides reason to go back and replay each level through and unlock bonus content. De Blob is unique, for its objectives include painting a city that has lost all its color. This title supports 4 players offline and has 8 multiplayer modes. Consisting of beautiful sound tracks and visual design in addition to good controls. It also provides something for both casual and hardcore gamers. Winner of Gamespot's Best Australia-Developed Game of 2008 Award.

I would think of it as being under Other because it's not quite up as high as the top 10 in the must have, isn't a Wiiware game, and has no online multiplayer. I guess Party could work too as I've already stated being 4 player offlie and 8 multiplayer modes. Also under Wiiware titles maybe some photos could be posted next to the names of the titles?

Yes add de blob like he said. Add House of the Dead to other with umbrella chronicles as well. Also I think you should take boom blox out of the must haves and put it in the party category. Scythes777

I would advise everyone to not get too caught up in debate about little things, especially since the final decision will be up to me anyway. ;)

Switch Okami and no more heroes around. Okami should be in must haves while No more heroes should be in "other".

Also take out guitar hero III and replace it with world tour, or you could have both.

Wii fit should be on there somewhere (maybe party), and so should animal crossing (maybe online).

And for the wii ware titles add tetris party

Add this in the party game section:

The game's story has a chapter not canon to the manga of Naruto, but does feature some canon moments in a mission mode such as Naruto and Sasuke's brutal fight in their second stage transformations. Also Ultimate Jutsu combinations in a Squad mode, such as Jiraiya and Naruto doing Rasengan to the same target. The game also features a four player competitive playing and you can have two on two, three on one, or all four against each other. Also new characters such as Kurenai Yuhi, Asuma Sarutobi, Baki, and Choji Akimichi. Also a returning character absent from the last game, Kiba Inuzuka.

de Blob is a must have game times a billion.

I would put Okami in the must have games too.

All right, here's what I have so far:

Animal Crossing, De Blob, Rock Band 2, Tetris Party, and Wii Fit will all be added somewhere. I've seen plenty of support for all of those games in the forum in general since their respective releases.

World Tour will replace Guitar Hero 3.

The other games that have been mentioned need more support before I can justify putting them on the list. Fire Emblem and House of the Dead seem the most likely two to be added, since those games are talked about often (even though HotD just came out).

As for No More Heroes, it's funny. Up until maybe two or three months ago, No More Heroes was the be-all end-all of Wii games, but I've been seeing more scaled back opinions about it lately. Most of you probably know my stance on the game already, so I have no problem moving it out of the Must Have section into the Other.

I argued for a long time that Okami simply isn't widely appealing enough to be a Must Have, but that was before I put a significant amount of time into it. Now that I've beaten it, I think it's a title everyone should consider. I'm not 100% convinced about that yet, though.

In looking through my collection of games, here are a few that you don't have that you might want to consider:

Sonic and the Secret Rings

Sonic Unleashed

Not "Must Have" games, but they might warrant a spot in the "Other" section. I'm not sure what qualifies a game for the "Other" section, to be honest. :P

Basically, I don't really see the point in separating a recommendation list into all the genres. There's just too many genres, and some of them would require some not-so-great games to be in them just to fill some slots. I chose Party Games and Online Multiplayer because those are the two most sought-after categories from what I've seen, and Must Haves are the best, while Others are the honorable mentions, if that helps clear it up at all.

Well, then I guess it depends on your bar for "high-quality". :P Sonic and the Secret Rings got 7.6, NiGHTS: JoD got 7.5, and Sonic Unleashed got 7.0, both equal to or greater than the 7.0 that Umbrella Chronicles got. The Sonic games are pretty high-profile, and NiGHTS I would call a definite cult hit.

A bit of criticism here. Not only does Wii have titles that fall into different categories and have different audience, but also there are kids' games and games for more mature audience. I'd like to see more detailed list of the games. Of course I could plainly list all the genre X games on the site, but there's not much of that "recommendation" there. How about creating another recommendation type list that lists all the games by genre there and people could vote for + or - there and the total numbers of + and - would determine whether the game is on the good or the bad list of the genre. Well, if you want specifics, that's why the thread is open for people who want to ask questions. The point of the opening posts is just to give people a quick-and-dirty rundown of the choice games that are available.

Switch Okami and no more heroes around. Okami should be in must haves while No more heroes should be in "other".

I was finally able to make some of the changes you guys suggested. I added De Blob, Rock Band 2, GH World Tour, Wii Fit, and Tetris Party. I also moved Okami to the Must Haves (but didn't move No More Heroes to Other, at least not yet).

I'm still taking suggestions and recommendations, so let me know. Thanks for all the help!

Perfect standard controls, perfect motion controls, casual fan can jump in and play a game, dedicated fans can play the single player campaign which takes over 800 hours if you play them all.

Shaun White's Snowboarding. Millions of people have the Wiiboard and once you've unlocked all of the games what do you do with it? That's right get Shaun White's it's cool, stylised got 7.5 on GS and higher on Metacritic and is well worth getting.

Bully it's an 8.0 on GS why is it not on the list it's a great game with a great premise and fun to play, really should be on the list.

House of the Dead: OverKill

Again 8.0 and is arguablly the best gun game on the Wii.

Fifa 09 - All Play

Surely this has usurped PES08? It's rated higher by GS.

Lastly I've not played it yet but Lit should defo be added to the WiiWare list.

I gotta vote for Final Fantasy: Chocobo's Dungeon. It just has such an addictive nature to it and it's presentation and story is very charming. I would say it's a must have but I suppose it would fit in the "other" category.

Edit: I also want to suggest House of the Dead:Overkill. It's hilarious and fun. I have been playing it since it came out and I'm not tired of it yet. Plus the Handcannon peripheral is probably the best gun shell out there.

I think Overkill will probably be the next game added.

Shaun Whites really deserves a mention because it is the best balance board game out there and there are millions of balance board owners that should buy it.

Maybe you need a section that's like "I've got everything above what else should I consider" for the highly rates less talked about games. Again if they were in the recommended thread maybe some more people would get them, look them up etc.

By only adding "high profile" games you're basically helping along the notion that only big name games should ever be played.

With a Nintendo system it's even compounded to a greater extent by the philosophy that it's best games are first party only.

I was wondering if there could be an alternative thread to the game recommendation. A specific thread that deals with Gamecube and Virtual Console games considering that a lot of people ask for opinions on those games. Because of the large back catalog of both the GC and VC, a new thread would work well and we would have a Wii-only recommendation thread and another GC/VC thread. It could also help people who want their questions on recommended games get answered quicker and more effectively. It would take up some time to make such a thread but I think it's a good idea if you have the time.

There are already a couple links for GC and VC games at the beginning of the Games section. There's a GC recommendation thread in the Legacy forum, so we don't really need to repeat that here.

As for VC games, I think it would be nearly impossible to come up with a good recommendation list. So much depends on nostalgia, and most people come into the forum with a few games already in mind when it comes to the VC and simply want some opinions on which to get first. The current thread works just fine for that.

With that said, I'm not opposed to someone trying to create a specific VC recommendation thread, but I'm not going to do it myself. If one were to be created and it turned out pretty good, I'd simply link to it from the current sticky.

I really don't think the Wii Fit should be included without Shaun White and Skate It (I don't think these two games should be included without the balance board either). Perhaps a section for good games that can be used with the balance board? I was actually looking for game recomendations for the balance board before I bought it, so this would definitely be a bennefit.

One more idea -- turn the game thread into its own forum. The sticky thread is too long to read, is too often ignored, and gets really confusing on who is answering what.psychobrew

I agree with the part I've bolded. Maybe not it's own forum but there has to be a way to cut down on the posts or organize comments from players in with the recommmendations on the first pages of the thread. Basically you're required to read the beginning of the thread to see what's recommended but for the most part, not why the games are recommended. When I'm looking to buy a game I want to know why people thought it was a good game and I can't find that out without having to weed through the rest of the thread.

I also think that posts get lost in the thread and don't always get answered.
