Its perfectly normal :)
It actually Is something I prefer over the clicky d-pad. Especially for games like Mario kart and Metroid!!
Just a few days ago i bought a new DS lite. I noticed that the D-Pad is a little loose, i'm just wondering if anyone can tell me if this type of thing is normal. Thanks.prankster_33Can you go diagonal? A loose D-pad is the number one sign of that malfunction.

I am able to go diagonal. I play Metroid Prime Hunters and Tony Hawk American Sk8land with a loose (perfectly normal) d pad and it works fine.

I just bought another DS-lite(black) and the D-pad was a bit looser then my first DS-lite. I was a bit afraid of it aswell, but it actually makes the use of it feel smoother, and it doesn't seem like it's going to come of.
I guess the ds-lites differ slightly when they come out of the factory, in terms of buttons and stuff(some are more tight or loose).
