So who is going to be updating the Photo Channel that came out last night? I for one won't be. Those of you who don't know, the update will be taking away MP3 support in favor of theAAC file format.

I have never used AAC, so I don't see the point.

And what really makes me nervous is, will that also take away MP3 support in games like Excite Truck?

Personally, I wish they had just included AAC and allowed both file formats instead of just taking away MP3 support...

What do you all think?

no, they said that MP3 support for games (they especificaly named Excite truck) won't change, the format is still the same.

Whw couldnt you download it? It's only four stinkin blocks and you can put a picture of your choice for the Wii Menu and play ACC files. I don't use it much but I did it anyway.

Go into your channels and delete it. It'll turn back to Photo Channel 1.0

I'm technologically deficient when it comes to MP3s. How do you add your own to Excite Truck?

Are you sure about that? I swear I read that those who update will not be able to go back to the old version...

It's pretty easy. Pop a SD card with MP3s on it into your Wii. When you are playing Excite Truck, go into the options. For "Music" there is an option that says "Random" or something like that. Select that and it will randomly play the MP3s once each race starts.

For those who don't know, here is what it does.

Check out these enhancements to the Photo Channel, which will be available in December, 2007.

  1. Personalize your Wii Menu by making one of your favorite digital images from an SD memory card as the Photo Channel icon.
  2. Consumers with MP3 compatible Photo Channels will have the option of updating their Photo Channel to version 1.1, which replaces MP3 compatibility with the ability to play AAC files. AAC files provide a greater sound quality than an MP3 of the same size. This new compatibility will work with MP4 audio files in the .m4a format. Additionally, you can now choose to have the songs play back in a random order.

*Wii consoles sold in retail stores starting in December 2007 should include AAC file support.

*Starting in early December 2007, Wii Console owners who do not have AAC file compatibility will have the option of updating their Photo Channel to version 1.1 by downloading the new version from the Wii Shop Channel. Please note that once the Photo Channel has been updated to version 1.1, the channel will no longer be able to play MP3 format music files. Wii games that currently have features which use MP3 music files will continue to use the MP3 file format. These Wii games will not be compatible with the AAC files.

Additionally, consumers who purchase a Wii console with the updated Photo Channel (ver. 1.1) already installed will not be able to install the previous version to support MP3 playback.

Yes, I read it too but thankfully it was changed before the final release.

As long as your Wii had the older Photo Channel you can just delete it and it'll go back to 1.0, I downloaded it last night then deleted it to check it out.

@Chris_Eye, thanks for the info! I swear that when I last read about it on the Nintendo site, it didn't say anything about the games that support MP3 playback...

@Jaysonguy, that's good to know too! I wasn't about to update it if I couldn't go back, but if I can just delete the update, maybe I'll check it out. Especially if it's not going to change the file support in games like Excite Truck.

I downloaded it, I don't listen to music on my so it doesn't really bother me, unless they bring out more more games like exite truck where you can play your own music then I may revert back to version 1.0.

Most useless update ever. I'll be going back to MP3. I thought maybe the Channel had changed more than just music support. Didn't even bother to see if you can add a photo to the Channel icon. Plus, I hate that the bubble that pops up when you put the cursor over the Channel has the annoying "1.1" after the title. Ugh.
